Chapter 306: Chapter 306 Cooper Coldson Starts to Investigate Melissa Greenwood

"Oh?" Cooper Coldson seemed intrigued. "A regular psychologist won’t do? It must be someone like Dr. Sterling—an industry leader?"

Adam Sterling nodded affirmatively. "President Coldson, whether in terms of psychological defenses or self-identity, you’re top-notch. I’m afraid ordinary doctors wouldn’t be able to function properly in front of you."

Cooper let out a low laugh. "Am I to understand that Dr. Sterling is complimenting me for being too confident?"

"President Coldson, being overly confident—believing that everything is within your grasp," Adam Sterling said sternly, "One day, when you realize that’s not true, everything you’ve built could come crumbling down."

Cooper laughed again, his shoulders trembling as he did.

Adam frowned. "Cooper, I’m not trying to scare you with empty threats."

"Enough!" Cooper suddenly stopped laughing, glaring at Adam with hostility. "Dr. Sterling, you’re not here today to heal or save lives, are you?"

He leaned back against the sofa, tilting his head upward, his gaze sweeping across the other three. "Come on, tell me—how do you plan to persuade me to return the child?"

Lola Gold clenched her teeth, her chest heaving with rage. She wanted to storm over and give Cooper a piece of her mind.

Noah Coldson managed to hold Lola back, keeping his composure as he faced Cooper. "Cooper, taking the child away benefits no one."

He reasoned calmly and logically, "Yolanda Greenwood will hate you, the child will hate you too. What’s the point of this?"

"Big brother, you’re overthinking. Why would my son hate me?" Cooper chuckled. "I’m taking him now precisely to prevent you and Yolanda from brainwashing him, making him think his father is some kind of villain."

"But the child needs a mother!" Noah implored earnestly.

"Melissa has already promised me she’ll raise the child well, as if it’s her own biological child," Cooper said indifferently.

"You Coldson lunatic—you’re insane! You’re letting a murderer raise your child?" Lola couldn’t hold back her fury anymore. "Do you want your child to become another murderer?"

Cooper frowned dislikefully. "Lola Gold, do you realize that talking like this, I could sue you for slander anytime?"

Lola tried to retort, but Noah held her back, leaning close to warn her in a low voice, "Lola, we don’t have evidence. Don’t say things that’ll get us into trouble."

Gritting her teeth, Lola finally spat out, "No matter what, you absolutely cannot hand the child over to Melissa Greenwood."

"That’s not for you to worry about." Cooper stood up, ready to leave. "If you don’t have a better argument, I’ll be on my way."

"Cooper, does hurting Yolanda over and over not scare you—don’t you fear retribution?" Lola knew today’s efforts had been in vain again.

Cooper paused at the door, speaking over his shoulder without turning around, "Only cowards believe in retribution."

He strode away.

Richard Reyes soon entered to escort them out. "Ladies and gentlemen, let me see you out."

They exchanged glances but had no choice other than to leave.

Once in the elevator, Lola refused Richard entry. "You don’t need to escort us. We know the way—we don’t want to share an elevator with scum like you."

"Very well. Rest assured, I’ll have someone meet you on the first floor," Richard nodded slightly and promptly made a call.

Watching the elevator descend, he then headed to Cooper’s office.

Cooper stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling window, his back to the door. Whenever he saw this sight, Richard always felt an odd loneliness emanating from his boss.

Richard cleared his throat lightly and asked in a low voice, "President Coldson, do you have any instructions?"

"Do you think Melissa Greenwood is capable of murder?" Cooper suddenly asked.

Richard’s heart skipped a beat, incredulity flooding his expression. "Are you referring to your fiancée, Miss Greenwood?"

Cooper turned to look at him. "I’ve never asked you to investigate Melissa."

Richard nodded. "Because you trust Miss Greenwood."

But his heart was now racing—something seemed to be taking a very unexpected turn.

"Yes, I trust her." Cooper repeated and then sank into his seat.

Since the day Melissa appeared holding that jade pendant, she’d been the brave, kind little girl in his eyes. He’d never considered investigating her, nor had he ever doubted her words.

But today, Lola and the others had strongly cautioned against handing the child to Melissa—even calling her a murderer.

Melissa and the word "murderer"—Cooper found it hard to associate the two.

He should’ve dismissed it outright, but seeing their expressions had stirred an intense unease within him.

"Look into her life. From childhood till now—every detail," Cooper’s face grew grim. "I want all the information."

"Understood." Richard nodded.

Cooper reminded him, "Be discreet—make sure Melissa doesn’t find out."

"Understood." Richard swiftly left.

Cooper could only hope it was all just a misunderstanding—that Melissa was innocent. Otherwise... if what Adam Sterling had said was true, everything he’d done so far... He dared not think about the consequences.

After leaving the Coldson Group building, the three got into the car. Noah didn’t start the engine; the three simply sat in silence.

"He’s seriously ill," Adam spoke first, certain in his judgment.

"I think so too," Lola said through gritted teeth. "And it’s not a minor illness."

Noah felt exhausted.

"Let’s head back," Lola suggested. "We shouldn’t upset Yolanda by waking her and finding us gone—it’ll just make her worry."

Noah immediately started the car. On the way, he suddenly said, "I’ll visit the old house tonight—the only person who might be able to persuade Cooper now is Mom."

"Do you think there’s hope?" Lola asked eagerly.

"I don’t know." Noah couldn’t make any promises. He’d left home at the age of six, and when he returned, there was a 20-year blank space in his interactions with Isabella Ross and Cooper.

He sighed deeply, "We can only try. At least usually, Cooper listens to my mom."

"Let’s hope so," Lola whispered, her nose stinging as she closed her eyes. "Yolanda is really pitiful."

Adam looked at the two of them and repeated, "I mean it—Cooper is truly ill."

"Then let his sickness kill him—" Halfway through her words, Lola gave Noah an apologetic glance. "He’s loaded; what’s a little illness? If I were that rich, I wouldn’t mind dying of illness."

Adam shook his head, unwilling to argue. "Fine, not like it’ll kill him anyway."

Back at Gray City Hospital, fortunately, Yolanda hadn’t woken yet. They carried on as if nothing had happened, checked on the young girl, and then quietly waited in the hospital room.

By evening, Yolanda finally woke up, drawn out by the aroma of food.

"Finally awake—hungry?" Lola asked with a smile.

"A little," Yolanda admitted, embarrassed as she touched her stomach.

A strange, unprecedented emptiness startled her for a moment—the child was gone, her belly was empty, everything felt like a dream.

Suddenly anxious, she asked, "When can I see the two children?"
