Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Will Cooper Coldson Trust You or Melissa

"It was a matter of necessity back then," Eliana’s voice came from the study.

Yolanda stood outside, her hand poised to knock, frozen in mid-air.

"I just didn’t expect her to be so stubborn. But then again, if it hadn’t been for the fact that you were her mother, and she was..."

It was Melissa’s voice, but Yolanda couldn’t make out the rest.

"I wouldn’t have been comfortable letting Cooper go," Melissa sighed softly, "Now I only hope the two of them get a divorce quickly and everything returns to normal."

"Don’t worry, there won’t be any problems," Eliana said with conviction.

The study fell silent, yet Yolanda’s head was pounding.

So, she was right in her guess?

Eliana really conspired with Melissa to make her sleep with Cooper?

But why?

The door before her suddenly opened, and Eliana saw Yolanda’s pale face at the door, which made her heart flutter with panic.

"You little wretch, what are you doing standing here?"

She didn’t know how much Yolanda had overheard and looked back at Melissa guiltily.

"Yolanda’s back."

Melissa was the first to react, stepping forward to take Yolanda’s hand, "When did you get here?"

Yolanda stepped back, eyeing the two women warily.

"You little wretch, what’s this? Your cousin is speaking to you. What’s with that look?"

Eliana began to curse out loud.

"Why?" Yolanda fought to hold back her tears, asking word by word, "Why did you do this?"

"What ’why’?" Eliana realized that things had been exposed, "The damn girl is acting up again."

She turned to Melissa and signaled with her eyes, "Alright, Melissa, weren’t you going to visit your mom at the hospital? Go on then."

"Okay, Aunt Eliana, I’ll come to see you another day," Melissa turned to leave.

Yolanda suddenly grabbed her arm, "Why? Melissa, why did you harm me back then?"

"Yolanda, what’s wrong with you?" Melissa tried to pull her hand free, "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"Yolanda, what are you raving about?" Eliana also went to pull her away, "You damn girl, let go of her. How many days have you not come home, and the moment you do, you cause trouble? The Greenwood Family doesn’t have a daughter like you."

However, Yolanda still held onto Melissa’s wrist tightly, "Why exactly? Why did you drug me and Cooper at the birthday party? What are you trying to do?"

"Yolanda, what are you talking about?" Melissa looked to Eliana for help, "Aunt Eliana, is Yolanda distressed by something? Think of something quickly."

Upon hearing this, Eliana went mad, striking Yolanda frantically.

"I told you to stop talking nonsense, I told you to stop!"

Finally, she managed to separate the two, "Melissa, you should go. Yolanda’s not right in the head, I’ll deal with her."

Melissa nodded and then warned Yolanda, "Yolanda, I will pretend I didn’t hear what you just said. That year, you wronged me; if you think you can pin this on me, Cooper won’t let you off."

"That’s right, what do you think you are? Do you have evidence to question what happened back then?"

Eliana, hands on her hips, joined in the shouting, "Do you think Cooper will believe you or Melissa?"

Yolanda, held tightly by Eliana, could only watch helplessly as Melissa walked away.

With a heart turned to ashes, she withdrew her gaze and looked at Eliana.

Only at this moment did she have to question what Lola Gold had said, just who was Eliana’s real daughter?

"Mom," she clung to her last shred of hope, "if you go with me to explain to Cooper, he won’t divorce me. I’ll make him give you more money."

"What dreams are you having?" Eliana scoffed, "I’m not going to see Cooper with you. Even if I went, it would be to urge him to divorce you as soon as possible."

Melissa had already left, and she let go of Yolanda with disdain, "Yolanda, I’m advising you, give up hope and just divorce Cooper."

Yolanda could not remember how she left the Greenwood’s.

She got into a taxi and gave the address, "To the city center hospital."

She opened her palm, where a few strands of hair lay, plucked from Eliana Reed’s head during their recent altercation.

She gazed out the window, silently letting the tears stream, her grip on the hairs growing tighter and tighter.

For a child, to doubt one’s own parentage is a heart deeply wounded; how else could one suspect they might not be the biological offspring of their parents?

The hospital’s laboratory department had already closed for the day, and Yolanda Greenwood had run up and down several flights of stairs before she finally managed to take care of everything.

The results would take ten to fifteen days to come back.

Exhausted, Yolanda trudged back to Lola Gold’s place.

"Yolanda? Are you alright?" Lola Gold was worried sick, "Why do you look so pale?"

With tears rimming her eyes, Yolanda looked at Lola and recounted what had happened at the Greenwood Family home.

When she got to the part about getting a DNA test, she was nearly crying too hard to speak.

Lola Gold, who was listening, was moved to tears as well; she felt that Yolanda was so pitiable.

Yolanda loved Cooper Coldson so much yet had married him in such a disgraceful way, becoming the person he despised the most. Now that she knew the truth, how could she bear it?

"Yolanda..." She truly didn’t know how to comfort Yolanda Greenwood.

Because she understood that what Melissa Greenwood had said was true: without evidence, as long as they didn’t admit anything, Yolanda could only take the blame.

"Yolanda, tomorrow’s Wednesday, what... are you planning to do?"

Yolanda almost forgot that Cooper Coldson had asked her to meet at the Civil Affairs Office tomorrow to finalize their procedures.

She shook her head, "I don’t know, Lola, I’m tired, I want to sleep first."

However, once she lay in bed, her mind a mess, she found herself unable to fall asleep.

The next morning, Lola Gold noticed the heavy dark circles under Yolanda’s eyes and felt an ache in her heart.

"Yolanda, do... do you want me to come with you?"

Yolanda shook her head, "No need, Lola, don’t worry, I’m fine."

She got her things together and left the house.

Meanwhile, Cooper Coldson arrived ten minutes early at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Office.

Not far away, two lines had formed.

The queue on the left was long, buzzing with laughter, each person’s face filled with aspirations for the future.

The one on the right had only four people, all with gloomy and irritable expressions, clearly everyone just wanted to get the present ordeal over with as quickly as possible.

How ironic.

Cooper withdrew his gaze, irritably pinching the bridge of his nose.

Back when he and Yolanda had come here to get their marriage certificate, what had he felt?

Probably similar to those four people on the right.

He let out a wry laugh; his marriage with Yolanda had been doomed to tragedy from the start.

"What time is it?"

Richard Reyes checked his phone, "Mr. President, it’s 8:28."

Cooper frowned, "Call her!"

What kind of game was this woman playing now?

Had she changed her mind at the last minute?

He had neither the time nor the patience for her games!

"Yes, sir."

Richard Reyes quickly dialed Yolanda’s number, but after several calls, there was no answer.

It was almost 8:30 now.

Cooper was beside himself with anger and personally made the call, which again was abruptly disconnected.

But soon after, a message from Yolanda popped up on his WeChat.

[Wait a moment for me, I’ll be there soon.]
