Chapter 16: Chapter 16 I Won’t Acknowledge Even If I’m Pregnant
Yolanda Greenwood soon arrived at the top floor office of the Coldson Group.
The moment she pushed the door open, she met Cooper Coldson’s gaze head-on.
It was their first encounter since that night, and the atmosphere instantly turned awkward.
Cooper was the first to look away and continued perusing the documents on his desk.
"Does Baruy have such flexible working hours?"
Yolanda was startled for a moment before realizing Cooper was asking why she wasn’t at work.
"Something came up, and it looks like I might lose my job."
The man chuckled softly as if everything was within his expectations.
He lifted his head, his slender eyes unflinchingly watching Yolanda.
"Regretting it? Don’t want to walk away empty-handed anymore?"
So, she had come in person to modify the divorce agreement.
"No."
Yolanda really disliked Cooper’s attitude.
If she was truly after money, why had she worked as a maid for free for a year?
"Cooper, make it clear, I didn’t gain any benefits from marrying you this year."
"Is that so?" Cooper’s gaze turned more mocking, "What about your mother?"
"..." Yolanda was at a loss for words.
She knew her mother, Eliana Reed, had taken quite a lot of money from the Coldsons this year, but that money had nothing to do with her.
Still, they were mother and daughter, and she couldn’t clear it up.
She could only ask helplessly, "How much? How much did my mom ask from you? I can pay you back in the future."
"Pay me back?" Cooper seemed to find it even more laughable, "At least ten million, what do you have to pay me back with?"
Ten million?
Yolanda was utterly shocked.
She had thought it was at most one or two million.
It had to be said, Cooper was really generous not to love her yet still give her mother ten million.
But ten million a year... why would Eliana Reed want Cooper to divorce her?
Could it be that marrying Melissa Greenwood would bring even more money to Eliana Reed?
Was that possible?
Cooper noticed her expression, "If you don’t believe it, you can ask Richard Reyes for the bank transfer records."
"I believe you." Yolanda knew that Cooper wasn’t one to lie about such things.
"So when will you pay it back?"
Cooper stopped and looked at her.
Yolanda felt a headache coming on, "As soon as I can."
Cooper scoffed, knowing that Yolanda couldn’t pay him back.
As he lowered his head again, he quickly added a question.
"Did you take the medication?"
"What medication?" Yolanda was confused.
Cooper stopped signing, still staring down, "I asked you, have you taken any medicine after that night?"
That night?
Yolanda quickly realized Cooper was referring to whether she had taken any contraceptive pills after they had been intimate, as they were about to divorce.
What would happen if she was pregnant?
Too bad Cooper was overthinking it.
"Young Master Coldson, don’t worry, I took the pills a long time ago."
Cooper, holding the pen, unconsciously gripped it tighter.
"You know better, but I’m reminding you, if you dare play any tricks, even if you are really pregnant, I won’t recognize the child."
Yolanda had always known that Cooper didn’t love her, but hearing it so bluntly still made her painfully sad.
She took a deep breath before speaking lightly, "Don’t worry; I don’t want to deal with a divorce and carry a burden as well."
With a slam, Cooper threw the pen onto the table.
Yolanda jumped in fright and looked at Cooper in confusion.
She saw Cooper hit the phone on the desk, his tone displeased, "Inform everyone to meet in the conference room immediately. The proposal is such a mess, Coldson Group has just been sustaining these incompetents for nothing."
So, it was because of work.
Yolanda was impressed.
She felt that Cooper wasn’t too busy to divorce; rather, divorce matters were just too trivial for him.
This marriage never existed in his eyes.
Soon, Richard Reyes came in, cautiously reminding him, "President, everyone is waiting in the conference room."
Cooper stood up and left without looking back.
Yolanda tried to follow but was stopped by Richard Reyes.
"Ma’am, please wait here for a while, and we can discuss anything after our president has finished the meeting."
Yolanda had no choice but to give up.
At noon, Richard Reyes personally delivered takeout to her.
"Ma’am, I’m not sure about your taste, so I just ordered some random dishes. Check them out, and if you don’t like them, I can send someone to buy something else."
"No need." Yolanda asked anxiously, "Is your meeting still not over?"
Richard shook his head, "It might take a while longer."
"And lunch?"
Richard gave a wry smile, "We’ll just go hungry. Without the president’s word, who dares to mention it?"
Not wanting to delay too long, he added, "Ma’am, please eat slowly; I will have someone come to clean up, I need to rush back now."
Yolanda finished her lunch and waited for several more hours.
During this time, she repeatedly checked outside the conference room; it was indeed bustling.
Cooper looked deeply aggrieved as if he had a grievance with everyone.
All of Coldson’s office staff hardly dared to breathe.
Seeing that it was getting dark and the Civil Affairs Office would have long closed, Yolanda had no choice but to give up.
As she reached the door, she suddenly thought of something.
She returned to the desk, took out a piece of chocolate from her bag, placed it down, then left.
When Cooper came back at eight o’clock that evening, he saw the chocolate on the table, hesitated, then ate it.
The initial taste was bitter; he frowned, but as the chocolate slowly melted, the rich cocoa flavor filled his mouth.
Standing in front of the large floor-to-ceiling window, Cooper stood for a while before sending Yolanda a message.
"Next Wednesday at 8:30 am, see you at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Office."
At that moment, Yolanda was just venting about the day’s events to Lola Gold.
The two sat back-to-back on the couch, each holding a pillow.
"How did Athena White know you were at Baruy?"
Lola always felt something was amiss.
Joy Bennett had set her up before, and now Athena White had come causing a scene, clearly with the same goal to make Yolanda lose her job.
"Maybe it’s a coincidence?"
Yolanda herself lacked confidence since the coincidences were too frequent.
Her suspicions grew heavier.
"What are you going to do about it?"
Yolanda fell silent.
The only thing that might change Jenny Reyes’ mind was her own capability.
She really needed this job.
"Lola, I’ve decided. I’ll draw a few more design sketches over the next few days and send them to Jenny Reyes on Monday."
"Good." Lola clapped her hands in approval.
This was the Yolanda she knew, always enduring all kinds of injustices and setbacks, but more resilient than weeds.
Lola believed that one day, Yolanda would bloom a stunning flower that would amaze everyone.
Before going to bed, Yolanda checked her phone.
Her nose tingled, and tears immediately fell.
"Yolanda, what happened?"
Yolanda hugged Lola, "I’m fine."
Lola saw the content on the phone.
She gently patted Yolanda’s back.
"Yolanda, don’t be too sad. You knew this was inevitable, and maybe, this is actually a release for you. It’s been too hard..."
"You’ve really suffered too much from loving Cooper all these years."
