Chapter 406: Chapter 406 New Job (1)
The excitement hadn’t faded when the phone rang again, and it was another unfamiliar number calling.
"Hello."
"Hello, is this Ms. Ye Nai?"
"Yes, it’s me. Who’s calling?"
"Hello, Ms. Ye Nai. I’m from the newly formed Mushroom Academician Team. You’ve been recruited as our junior archivist, and you’re asked to report to the Academician District within three days."
"Report to the Academician District? Okay, how is the work schedule arranged?"
"Your work follows the academicians’ schedules—you work when they work, you’re off when they’re off—and you’re expected to organize all data at any time."
"Where will I be staying?"
"There’s a staff apartment within the district, all about 50 square meters one-bedroom units. After you report in, we’ll take you to choose a place."
"Alright, this is a legitimate job, right? How’s the salary? Any benefits?"
"Your monthly salary for this job is eight thousand. The Academician District is a high-standard neighborhood with many Awakeners among its staff. Your position and salary level are average here, not attracting attention. There’s a cafeteria in the district offering three meals a day with good-tasting food handled by top chefs, served as a buffet with also small dishes available for packaging. Your apartment’s rent and utilities are free, but if anyone asks, just say the eight thousand salary includes your Space Storer subsidy, and the rent is fifteen hundred."
"Understood. I’ll prepare for it. How should I address you? I’ll call you before I come over."
"My surname is Gao, Gao Yi. I’m now the logistics liaison for the team, and this is my personal number."
"Got it. See you then."
Ye Nai hung up the phone and saved the number. Excitedly, she rolled around on the bed a few times before lying quietly for a while to calm down. Then she put on her shoes, went out, and knocked on Qin Rui’s door to tell him about it.
Qin Rui immediately contacted Camp Commander Lin, and after some discussion, Ye Nai picked up her phone to call Gao Yi the liaison, indicating she would report in tomorrow morning.
Gao Yi hung up Ye Nai’s call and immediately informed the four academicians.
The academicians have been in a state of excitement since they returned from the meeting, disregarding inquiries from their students and others, decisively merging their teams and even their security forces.
Gao Yi’s first task as the liaison was to call Ye Nai, though he felt bewildered while making the call.
Yet, those working closely with academicians are naturally not foolish. Even though no one knows what happened during the meeting, it’s clear Ye Nai is a key figure, and she’ll be meeting them tomorrow, which has everyone excited.
The next morning, Qin Rui’s team drove two off-road vehicles to take Ye Nai into the city.
The convoy stopped at the boundary between the city and suburbs. When there were no cars in sight, Ye Nai swiftly got out and took out her lemon-yellow car.
From this point, Qin Rui’s team’s security task ended, and she would proceed alone from there.
If the two off-road vehicles drove directly into the Academician District, Ye Nai might as well forget about staying low-key. With so many residents, including the academicians themselves, their families, and a bunch of staff members, there’s bound to be curiosity.
This was resolved through negotiations with Camp Commander Lin yesterday, otherwise his plan was to have Ye Nai driven by commercial vehicles for her reporting.
Ye Nai felt that if she were driven in by others, she’d certainly attract attention, possibly even making people think she was leveraging connections—as if she were a socialite polishing her credentials beside the academicians.
She preferred driving herself in with her car sporting the Awakener plates. Even if people assumed she got the beginner archivist job via connections, at least she’d come across as capable.
Ye Nai settled into her car, activated the navigation, and continued driving. Over an hour later, she smoothly arrived at the Academician District in the northern suburbs of the city.
Throughout the journey, she kept in touch with Gao Yi. When she spotted the entrance to the district from afar, she noticed a military security personnel stationed beside the guard post.
Ye Nai slowed down the car and rolled down the window as the security man approached, saluting her.
"Hello, are you Ms. Ye Nai?"
"Yes, that’s me. Are you Gao Yi?"
"Yes, I am."
"Do I need to register with the guard now?"
"No need. I’ll first take you inside for reporting, then to the district office to register and pick a key for a chosen apartment."
"Alright, get in."
Gao Yi quickly entered the passenger seat, and under his guidance, Ye Nai drove through the district, arriving at the adjacent research institute.
The so-called Academician District is merely the supporting residential area for the institute, so it’s well-equipped—not just with a cafeteria, but also a supermarket and hospital.
Gao Yi’s face acted as a pass, allowing easy access through any security checkpoints.
Eventually, Ye Nai arrived at a building’s entrance marked with the sign "Edible Fungus Research Institute."
After getting out of the car, Ye Nai stored it into her space and followed Gao Yi into the lobby, stepping into the elevator.
Inside the elevator, Gao Yi seized the chance to swiftly introduce her to the basics of the specially assembled Mushroom Team.
"This entire team is a merger of existing teams by four academicians, each highly authoritative in mushroom cultivation and research, with you being the only outsider addition, Ms. Ye Nai."
"Alright, give me an introduction to these four academicians."
"These four academicians consist of two men and two women, all in their fifties. The male academicians are Zhou Qiyang and Shen Yifei, and the female academicians are Ling Yue and Zeng Yaqin. They’re waiting for you in the conference room and can provide detailed introductions soon."
The six-floor building’s elevator stopped on the fifth floor. After stepping out, it took less than a minute for Gao Yi to bring Ye Nai to the door of a medium-sized conference room.
Gao Yi gently knocked, and when the colleague opened the door and laid eyes on Ye Nai, it was as if they had encountered the long-revered figure, with a gaze full of admiration.
The atmosphere in the conference room was quiet. When Ye Nai stepped inside, everyone paused in silence, as if even their breathing halted.
They were facing a wall where a PPT obtained from the Defense Director was being displayed, paused on Ye Nai’s personal profile page.
Ye Nai swiftly scanned over it, surprised to realize she appeared so impressive from this angle?!
Yesterday and until just now, Gao Yi had been "Drumming Man," and as he closed the conference room door, he noticed the wall’s screen contents, quickly scanning and absorbing it. In shock, he gasped loudly, breaking the silence within the room.
