Chapter 716 - 716: The souls conundrum Part 4
The information Uriel was able to gather from Soulfire was little, but not meaningless and Uriel had to admit it was worth meeting with him in spites of the hangover he had to endure the next day.
Unfortunately to Uriel, Soulfire's trait worked in a way so similar to what most people called magic he needed a witch to help him unravel the bits and pieces of information he got from the drunk Soulfire.
"So, how are you going to reward me for this?" Said Nika with the kind of grin Uriel hated the most.
"Now you want me to compensate you for doing your job properly for once?" Uriel scoffed, then continued. "if you want to be compensated, you'll need to bring her back."
"No way, you don't mean..." Nika's heart skipped a beat.
"Who are you talking about?" Alice tilted her head in utter confusion.
"No, not her. You need to find Bella." Uriel replied.
"Not her! She's a witch! Please..." Nika's hopeful face crumbled like a house of cards, but Uriel continued.
"Do I need to remind you the only reason we're going to Europe is to find a way to release the kid from the book? It's not a vacation and it will probably be dangerous which is why..." Uriel lingered for a few seconds. "we'll need Luna by our side. Who knows that kind of trouble we'll run into and we could use a field medic. Besides, we still have some time in our hands.
The blockade may be over, but no zeppelins have reached this part of the continent yet." Uriel nodded with a stern expression.
"Come on, don't pretend you don't miss her." Nika hugged Uriel and gave him a kiss on the cheek causing faint smile to appear on his face.
"Alice, I need you to pack up everything and get it ready for moving day. Make sure to sort everything in the proper categories, if I find so much as one artifact in the wrong box I'll cut your pay in half."
"Understood!" Alice stood firm and watched as the two hunters exited the room.
In the few months after Luna disappeared her trace had gone cold, but the last time anyone saw her was in Hollywood megacity which played in their favor since that was also were Bella lived with her brother Tate.
Nika wasn't thrilled to make the trip on foot, but she was even less thrilled to enter Uriel's museum which was now filled with the mummies of the cultists he commanded in his fight against the nameless aberration summoned by the Society.
Upon reaching the gates they were stopped by the guards and Uriel expected to be placed in handcuffs like usual. Uriel's status as a criminal was a consequence of Uriel acting as a hitman against the remnants members of the society.
It worked well for everyone because Lister needed someone who could operate in the shadows to clean the city and Uriel didn't mind adding a few extra souls into his book. Contrary to his expectations, the guards not only let them inside without, but they didn't even need to wait in line.
"This is nice, the whole getting arrested thing was getting old. Anyway, come find me after you fetch Bella, I'll be at the Dolminicos."
"Right, the hybrids... that would be a nice idea, but I tried bribing and threatening them to get some information out of them. What makes you think you can succeed where even I failed?" Nika glared at Uriel who remained unfazed.
"I have something they want." Uriel shrugged and left Nika to her own devices.
Due to her upbringing Nika had a visceral hate for anything related to the army, though no one could have guessed it judging her attire. She like her black shorts and camo tank top more than dresses or fancy clothing since it allowed her to move freely, but it caused people to somethings assume she belonged to the army.
This was precisely the case when she showed up at the barracks where she was saluted by the two soldiers guarding the entrance. She didn't mind this and simply walked in, glad that she wouldn't need to use her trait in order to infiltrate the facilities.
She had never met another hunter with a trait like hers, but there were several common traits that could detect her presence despite her hiding inside the shadows.
She looked around the barracks and saw groups of soldiers taking laps around the race track singing hymns or jodies being followed by drill sergeants. It gave her the shivers, but thankfully she soon found a familiar face.
"Looking good, Tate!" Nika waved at him, prompting the man to fly over to the sunkissed huntress.
"Miss Nika, I'm glad to see you're doing fine. Where is he?" Tate looked around trying to spot Uriel in the distance.
"Sorry, he's busy." Nika shrugged.
"Too bad, I wanted to say hi." Tate looked dejected.
"Maybe we can catch up some other day, but I really need to speak with your sister. Is she around?"
"She was allowed to remain here while she treated those who were affected by the Lightbringer's curse and charm, but once she was done they kicked her out." Tate explained with a disgruntled expression.
"Those bastards... it's always the same with them. They use people like they're objects." Nika clenched her fist.
"They did offer her to stay and join us, but she wasn't having it."
"Figures," Nika scoffed. "So, where is she?"
"I'll give you her number, I bet she'll love to meet up," Tate smiled at Nika, who seemed confused by the soldiers saluting her whenever she passed. "if you're wondering about that, let's just say your company's contribution to ending the siege made you all heroes in the eyes of the army."
Nika couldn't wait to let Uriel know the news and felt tempted to send him a text message, though she didn't want to distract him while he dealt with the criminal underworld thinking as it might put him in danger. Had the Dolminicos been just hunters it would have been one thing, but they placed all the hybrids under their wings and were now a force to be reckoned with, even for Uriel.
'He'll call me if he needs me.' Nika thought inwardly, before dialing up Bella to let her know she was in the city.
