Chapter 441: Chapter 442: Irreplaceable
"There are no ifs..." Chloe Turner murmured, repeating his words. One hand clutched her pocket tightly, while the other formed a fist. Her sad expression was extremely painful as she stubbornly asked, "Why did you still stick to that promise then?! You didn’t let me suffer on my own because of the sanitary pad, and you said it was for my brother, but I know, you have feelings for me too, right?! Otherwise, you wouldn’t have agreed to marry me back then. If I hadn’t left, we would have been married by now, wouldn’t we? Why can’t the sanitary pad go back to the way it was?!"
"William, you clearly haven’t forgotten me! I’ve always been in your heart! Haven’t I?!" Chloe’s eyes were filled with tears, her voice trembling.
William Griffith stood before her, quietly replying, "I don’t want to betray Bob Turner."
Was it really just that? Was it just because of her brother’s request that he accepted her? It couldn’t be. William was not a man who could just handle his lifetime emotions like that. Taking in someone else’s wishes without questioning them? He couldn’t accept her as his wife if he had no feelings for her.
Such a simple answer, yet it was incredibly bitter for Chloe Turner to hear.
There he stood right in front of her, maintaining that five-meter distance - the same distance he’d always kept while waiting outside the school, outside the dormitory, on the shaded path... so many places filled with memories.
Chloe suddenly began to hate this five-meter distance. She bit her lip and ran towards him, opening her arms wide and hugging him tightly. Tears swirled in her eyes and she choked out, "William, I don’t want any ’what ifs’, I don’t want them, I don’t want...!"
She kept repeating the words "I don’t want," trying to grasp something in return.
William stood still, allowing her embrace while listening to her suppressed sobs. In a deep voice, he said, "Chloe, don’t be like this. Back then I didn’t really understand what love was... until I met..."
He wanted to say that after meeting Cherish Turner, he finally knew what true love was - an emotion that no one else could replace.
"Why do you still remember my favorite candy?!" She tightened her grip on his shirt in a daze, questioning him.
"We’re friends, and you’re Bob’s sister. I have a responsibility." William’s magnetic, calm voice made Chloe suddenly feel powerless. She bitterly laughed and let go of him, turning to run away with wide strides.
Colors blurred before her eyes as she raced towards the unknown amidst the neon lights.
Returning home, Chloe could no longer contain her heartache, collapsing onto the floor in tears. Tears fell as she still held the pocket in her hand. Inside were two boxes of candy he’d bought for her, quietly lying there. She frantically grabbed the candy, tearing open the wrappers and eating them one by one. The sweetness became overwhelming and even tasted bitter as she struggled to swallow them.
She curled up in a corner, leaning against the wall, and took out the badge from the pocket, her hand trembling.

Waiting for the phone to ring felt like being on a roller coaster ride, time moving so slowly as the car inched up to its peak. When it suddenly paused, then raced downwards, the ringing phone felt like the rush of that moment. Seeing the words "boss" on her phone screen made Cherish dizzy with emotion.
