Chapter 1207: Chapter 1206: My Choice
“Rookie, I know this is hard, but this time, I may not be able to keep fighting.”
Calm and serene, yet neither fragile nor cowardly.
A strong and resilient soul resides within that battered, weakened shell, radiating brilliance, even as Death God draws near, still joking and jesting.
Felix lies there, underneath pale skin, blue veins visible, vitality seemingly fading before the naked eye.
Yet, the gaze is so resolute.
“Mom has been pretending to be strong, Jenna and Jeff are also trying to help.”
“No one wants to tell me the truth because no one dares to face reality. They’re just comforting me, saying everything will be fine, there’s no problem. It’s just a minor issue, no different from previous setbacks, we’ll get through it, we’ll recover.”
“But, this is my body.”
No explanations, nor are they needed, Felix’s eyes have said it all.
“Rookie, do you know?”
“I’ve been holding on for a long, long time, I mean, a long time.”
“Two years ago, I was supposed to die, yet I didn’t.”
“Around this time last year, I thought everything was coming to an end, even held a funeral for myself in advance, yet unexpectedly, I stayed, but Annie left first.”
“These past two years, I’ve been saying goodbye, watching fellow patients depart, while my soul, long destined for exploring paradise, lingered here. I guess if I keep staying, I might soon venture to hell.”
A small jest successfully made Li Wei tug at the corner of his mouth.
Felix noticed, and contentedly chuckled twice.
“I not only survived, but experienced an unparalleled journey. I witnessed us reaching the Super Bowl summit, I witnessed us defending the championship, I witnessed the emergence of the League’s number one running back, the birth of ‘Cheating Motion’. I experienced the waves of our comeback at Arrowhead Stadium, met vibrant lives at the Old Oak Tavern, felt life’s warmth and weight with my soul.”
“All of this was worth it.”
“If this is the end, I have no regrets.”
“So—”
Felix took a deep, deep breath.
“Rookie, can you promise me? Don’t be sad, let’s celebrate and party together, no matter how much time is left, we face it with a smile.”
“Mom…”
The voice choked slightly.
“Mom has really experienced too much, I don’t want her to keep suffering. Now I finally understand Annie’s meaning, although I don’t want mom to forget me, I want her to be happy, truly have her own life.”
“Rookie, I’m not pitiful.”
“Please don’t look at me with the eyes of a victim, I’m very happy, really, I want to laugh as I face the journey ahead, leaving no regrets.”
“Isn’t it just death, what’s there to fear? I’m a Chieftain, after all!”
“Fly high!”
As Felix spoke, he clenched his fist, his smile all lit up.
This scene made Li Wei feel so awkward, bittersweet yet he took a deep breath, clenched his fist, and joined Felix in shouting.
“Fly high!”
Felix laughed heartily, “Besides, this isn’t the end yet.”
Li Wei froze.
Felix, “Don’t forget, we Chieftains refuse to surrender, even in a battle with a destined outcome, we’ll fight to the end, burn out, shatter, leaving no regrets.”
“Our season isn’t over, I’m still looking forward to witnessing an undefeated season!”
A hint of bitterness spread lightly on the tongue, but Li Wei regained his smile, subconsciously straightened up, and rediscovered courage.
“An undefeated season, is that all? This goal seems effortless.”
Felix watched Li Wei’s smile reappear, it was the rookie he knew, “Honestly, what I really look forward to is a three-peat championship, not wanting to pressure you guys too much, so I’m holding back.”
“Haha, pressure? We’re not afraid of it at all. We eat pressure for breakfast.” Li Wei acted cavalier, “So if we make it to the Super Bowl, will you have the strength to go to Miami to watch?”
Felix intentionally lifted his chin slightly, gave a proud smile, “Just look at who I am, repeatedly escaping Death God’s scythe, even Houdini would feel ashamed seeing me.”
“If you make it to the Super Bowl, I will definitely go to Miami to watch.”
After saying this, Felix extended his right pinky, cast a challenging glance at Li Wei.
That expression, that demeanor, made Li Wei unable to hold back and he laughed openly, they hooked pinkies completing their promise.
However, the smile lingered only for a moment, Felix began to cough.
Cough cough.
Cough cough!
The coughing grew worse, two abnormal blushes stained his cheeks, it seemed as if in the next second he’d cough out all his insides.
The whole world started shaking.
Li Wei hurriedly pressed the nurse call button next to the bed.
Yet, he couldn’t calm the inner panic and fear, turned and dashed out of the ward, frantic and disoriented, looking around, seeking someone to help—
Karen, wasn’t outside, the empty corridor was eerily quiet, anxiety-ridden, like free-falling from a high altitude, struggling to grab anything for support but finding nothing, just helplessly plummeting as gravity fiercely dragged the heart down to hit the ground.
Step step step, step step step.
Finally, footsteps came from the direction of the nurse’s station, a nurse was sprinting full speed.
Then, a doctor in a white coat emerged from the next room, worry all over his face.
“What’s happening?”
Li Wei’s eyes were blank, soul seemingly gone, voice trembling slightly as he spoke, he thought he was speaking loudly but was merely mumbling, repeatedly muttering the same thing.
“No breathing… he doesn’t have any breath…”
The voice, stuck in his throat, hardly coming out.
Both the doctor and nurse froze, the doctor responded slightly quicker, pushed past Li Wei, ran to the bedside.
On the bed, Felix lay there with full cheeks and rigid limbs, motionless, the slight rise and fall of his chest now ceased.
Everything froze.
Li Wei’s fragmented, panicked voice murmured nearby.
“I, I was just talking to him, and suddenly he stopped moving… I don’t know what happened… what’s going on…”
The nurse wanted to step forward but seeing the doctor preparing to check on Felix, hesitated briefly and stayed by Li Wei’s side, trying to calm down amidst the chaos.
“Sorry, rookie, very sorry, but we all knew this would happen, hope he didn’t endure too much pain.”
Yet, such comfort backfired, Li Wei sank into deep despair, knees weakened, leaning against the doorframe, muttering.
“No, no…”
Beside the bed, the doctor was examining Felix, without warning, Felix sprung up like a zombie, screaming.
“Ah! Ah ah ah!”
