Chapter 1206: Chapter 1205: Smiling at Life and Death

"I’m sorry, I... I’m really sorry..."

This was the only voice echoing in Karen’s mind, over and over, again and again.

Li Wei never knew that a single "sorry" could feel so poignant, pressing against his chest until he could hardly breathe.

Li Wei gently shook his head, "Rather than saying sorry, why not say thank you, right?"

Karen was stunned, looked up at Li Wei, and silently nodded, "Thank you."

Li Wei let out a long breath, "Felix... how is he now?"

Karen glanced back at the ward, "He just woke up, but the situation..."

The words came to an abrupt halt, with too many uncertainties and fears swirling at the unknown end at this moment.

Karen lacked the courage to face it and awkwardly shifted the topic, "If he sees you, he’ll definitely be very happy. We were rewatching the London Bowl at home last night."

Li Wei’s lips curled slightly, "Looks like I should keep pushing myself, or else you might catch me slacking off."

Karen also tried to smile but failed to lift her lips, which soon drooped down powerlessly.

Li Wei called out, "Karen."

Karen looked up, puzzled, at Li Wei.

Li Wei stared into Karen’s eyes, "Things aren’t over yet."

Although Li Wei didn’t know how to comfort Karen, nor had the right way to face the situation, he refused to surrender.

Karen’s eyes warmed, and she nodding messily.

Li Wei hesitated slightly, knowing Felix’s condition was special, and generally, hospitals often prohibited non-immediate family members from visiting to avoid affecting the patient.

But as the words swirled on his tongue, Li Wei still asked, "Karen, can I go in to see Felix? If you refuse, that’s fine, just tell Felix I’m here, always here..."

Karen quietly looked at Li Wei, and in the blurred tears, she could see Li Wei’s struggle, but there was always a resilience shining in those eyes.

"Of course, rookie," Karen said, "In fact, I should thank you, you didn’t have to come in person at all, Felix..."

Felix was just an ordinary fan after all, among thousands and thousands of ordinary fans in Kansas City.

Li Wei shook his head, stopping Karen from continuing, "Felix is Felix, a unique fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, an indispensable part."

"Did you forget? We fight side by side. Of course, there’s Annie too, if we forget her, she’ll be very sad."

Karen showed a smile, tried to say something, but was quickly overwhelmed by tears, tightly closed her mouth, and silently nodded in agreement.

Li Wei wanted to say more, but ultimately couldn’t, lightly patted Karen’s shoulder, then stepped towards the ward.

Standing at the door, there was a fleeting moment when Li Wei felt afraid.

Yes, he felt afraid.

After experiencing Annie’s incident, facing the Death God again, Li Wei ultimately couldn’t hide his fear and panic.

Just as the thought surfaced, Li Wei seemed to hear Annie’s unrestrained laughter mocking him, that joyous laughter swirling around his ears.

Li Wei took a deep breath and pushed open the ward door.

At a glance, he could see Felix lying quietly on the hospital bed, small and fragile, as if he would be devoured entirely by the bed linens the next second.

The gentle rise and fall of his chest reminded Li Wei that he was still breathing.

Li Wei unconsciously lightened his footsteps, walked softly to the bed, looked at the bloodless face, the furrowed brows even in sleep, tormented by pain.

Nose, arms, chest filled with various tubes and wires, sustaining life, yet as if holding him hostage in a life-or-death struggle against the Death God.

On his chest, a sketchpad slipped crookedly from his hands, about to fall, and Li Wei instinctively caught it, taking a quick glance but couldn’t help looking again—

It seemed to be his medical record, detailing the medications, dietary restrictions, and symptoms since his diagnosis, like a medal chronicling his life’s battle.

And on the left side of the medical record, Felix drew simple cartoons, at ages seven, ten, fourteen, seventeen...

This is not all.

On the blank lower half of the medical record, there were more simple cartoons, age twenty-one holding a beer bottle, age forty holding a baby and wife, age eighty with a cane, chronicling the future Felix outlined.

Futures he may never explore.

Suddenly, Li Wei’s heart clenched tightly.

"Cough, cough."

Felix awoke, groggily opening his eyes.

"So, how’s my drawing skill?"

Li Wei quickly turned his head, took a deep breath, controlled himself, mustered a smile, and looked back at Felix, pointing at the eighty-year-old image, "Are you sure a cane is enough? No need for a wheelchair?"

Felix weakly raised his right hand, flexing his non-existent biceps, "Hey, you should see how strong I am."

Seeing Felix’s fragile smiling face rise, Li Wei tried to smile but found his mouth corners weighed a thousand pounds, his expression surely looked awful, "Did you overestimate yourself? When you get up, come to the team and train with us, let me show you what real training is."

Felix quietly gazed at Li Wei, without speaking.

For a moment, it was unclear if he had fallen back asleep half-awake, but those eyes made Li Wei uneasy.

Just as Li Wei was about to speak, Felix finally said, "Rookie, I don’t even know if I can stand again."

For a moment, Li Wei was stunned.

Caught off guard, awkwardly, brutally struck Li Wei.

After a pause, Li Wei realized he hadn’t hidden his expression, frantically mustered a smile, "Sorry, I must have looked like a fool just now."

"Hey, Felix, what nonsense are you talking about? Did you forget? We’re the Chieftains; our belief is to fight to the end, refuse to surrender."

"Remember? Until the final whistle blows, the game isn’t over. Oh, the way you are now, you don’t look like a Chieftain, kind of disappointing."

Li Wei sincerely felt like a fool.

The usual eloquence seemed useless at this moment, saying some meaningless platitudes, doing nothing but cheerleading.

That frustration and helplessness, even clenching fists couldn’t vent it.

Felix lay on the hospital bed, quietly watching Li Wei, with a gradually rising smile, "Heh, a rare chance to see you fumble, if Annie knew, she’d surely laugh heartily."

Li Wei tugged at the corner of his mouth, then ultimately failed, letting his lips droop down weakly.

Felix looked at Li Wei, weakly said, "Rookie, I know it’s hard, but this time, I might not be able to continue the fight."

On that pale face, a sacred glow radiated, looking at Li Wei candidly and frankly, as if gazing straight into the eyes of the Death God.
