Chapter 896: Chapter 897: Repair Complete
Xiao Ji summoned a series of black whirlwinds that continually circled around the Netherworld Pillar, ejecting Resurrectors that resembled fairies. Veronia, somewhat surprised, asked,
"Where on earth were they hiding?"
"They must be inside some special subspace."
Aguinas speculated when Long Boduo charged out with a roar and fiercely stamped the ground, causing a stone gate comprised of black rock pillars to appear out of thin air. A grey-black dirt path rapidly spread towards the Netherworld Pillar, and monsters with eyeball-like appearances showed up along the path.
"I see, hiding at the juncture between the Netherworld and reality, huh?"
Aguinas suddenly understood why Veronia had missed these things; after all, Veronia only possessed the authority of the Mirror Realm’s space. To find creatures hidden in special passages was still somewhat tricky.
Long Boduo, stepping on blue flames, rushed onto the dirt path. The eyeball monsters, seeing Long Boduo charge at them, immediately tried to dodge, but they were using a channel managed by Long Boduo to move between reality and the Netherworld, and they couldn’t escape his attack.
The eyeball monsters were kicked away like soccer balls by hooves burning with blue flames. Long Boduo snorted unhappily, and at that moment, the pitch-black flames guarding the Netherworld Pillar slowly extinguished, revealing the pillar undamaged.
Dark golden patterns covered the Netherworld Pillar now, resembling luxurious decorations which lent an imposing aura to the structure. Black mist gradually enveloped the pillar. Feng Yuan turned and looked at the chaotic Resurrectors with a cold smile,
"Causing me trouble? Xiao Ji! Come!"
Hearing Feng Yuan’s call, Xiao Ji swooped down towards where he was. As Xiao Ji skimmed over the ground in front of Feng Yuan, he leapt nimbly onto Xiao Ji’s broad back. Crouching on Xiao Ji’s back, Feng Yuan laughed,
"I finally get a proper chance to ride with you."
Although Xiao Ji’s form was unique, it was its own strength, not borrowed. Xiao Ji issued a joyful chirp, the sound traveling far in the open space.
In the sky, the excited Xiao Ji flew around for a while before settling down. Watching Xiao Ji in the sky, Veronia wondered what exactly Feng Yuan wanted to do. Right then, with a clear eagle’s screech, a giant round black spatial vortex appeared in the air.
Black chains surged from the vortex, binding the Resurrectors and pulling them into the whirlwind. Seeing this, Veronia canceled her transformation, reverted to her original form, and landed to the ground, saying with some confusion,
"Is he sending all these Resurrectors back? But if they come to disrupt things again later, isn’t it a wasted effort?"
Clearly, the Resurrectors had a way to sneak into the Netherworld. Even if Feng Yuan sent them back now, when the time came to repair it, those creatures would likely reappear.
"Maybe, who knows what he’s really thinking."
Aguinas said somewhat helplessly, while Big Cat mewled something. Aguinas looked at Big Cat with some amusement,
"You think he wouldn’t make a pointless effort? You haven’t been with him as long as I have. Can you say you understand him?"
"Just ask if you want to know, I didn’t think he’d consider that."
Aguinas said, glancing at Big Cat. The little lizard perched on Big Cat’s head yawned, seemingly tired. It was then that Long Boduo returned. After Feng Yuan completed the repairs, they had already taken down the protections; only Long Boduo, concerned that the Resurrectors might damage the newly repaired Netherworld Pillar, had dashed out to try and herd them together.
After a while, Xiao Ji rounded up all the Resurrectors and landed in front of Lanadi. Aguinas directly asked,
"If you’re just sending them back to the Yin World, what are you going to do when they show up again while you’re repairing the Netherworld Pillar?"
"They won’t. I’m not that stupid. They went where they’re supposed to go."
Feng Yuan said with a shrug, looking quite pleased with himself. Aguinas was puzzled, but Veronia guessed something and exclaimed in shock,
"You sent them to the Guardian God of the Yin World?!"
"Exactly—saves me the trouble of looking for it, right?"
Feng Yuan said, puffing out his chest and lifting his head with evident pride. Aguinas looked at Feng Yuan speechlessly,
"You’re going to give it quite the scare if you haven’t communicated with it beforehand."
After all, suddenly opening a door and throwing a bunch of enemies in front of you would probably frighten even Agunas, thought Feng Yuan as he glanced at the huge Xiao Ji behind him and said,
"Don’t worry, it just happens to be capturing these troublesome Resurrectors, it won’t get scared. Let’s go."
Xiao Ji carried Feng Yuan and the others back and forth to the different Netherworld Pillars, some of which were severely damaged while others were only slightly affected. After finally repairing the Netherworld Pillars, Feng Yuan looked at the chains on the ground, thought for a moment, and said to Long Boduo,
"I’m not going to release this seal for now. If there’s any abnormal situation, you can contact Agunas, it’s right by my side."
Long Boduo snorted, lowering his horse’s head and nuzzling Feng Yuan as if to express gratitude. Xiao Ji then squeezed Long Boduo to the side and let out several dissatisfied cries, seeming to air its own grievances. Feng Yuan, amused, patted Xiao Ji’s head and said,
"All right, you’ve been busy all night and must be tired, no more fussing— transform back into the Eggshell Chicken, and I’ll carry you back."
Xiao Ji looked at Feng Yuan, shook its head indicating it wasn’t tired, and there was no need for Feng Yuan to carry it; after all, Feng Yuan hadn’t had an easier day than it. Gladys glanced at Feng Yuan and said with a smile,
"Did you know you’d be busy with this all night, which is why you sneaked in some sleep earlier?"
"How could that be? If I had known, I wouldn’t have rested in the tree. Isn’t sleeping in bed much better?" Feng Yuan said somewhat exasperatedly, then looked at Gladys and added,
"Besides, if this could’ve been foreseen, don’t you think you should’ve been able to see it as well?"
"That’s hard to say, after all, I don’t know if you have the ability to see through this fog."
Gladys said with a smile, indeed, she really didn’t know what had happened here. Such situations weren’t uncommon; although she had the special ability to glimpse into the future, her powers were still limited by her own strength. When her power was insufficient, even with her special ability, she wouldn’t be able to foresee certain things.
Not to mention tonight’s events, with three Divine Beasts in attendance, even Lorraine Tower might have difficulty peeking into the future of this place.
"Let’s go, let’s go. Oh, do you need to rest, or...?"
Feng Yuan remembered something, looked at Lanadi, and gently patted Xiao Ji. Only then did the creature slowly transform back into the Eggshell Chicken and jump into Feng Yuan’s arms.
"It actually has two forms?" Lanadi looked at Xiao Ji in Feng Yuan’s arms in surprise. Feng Yuan replied with a slight smile,
"Is that very amazing?"
"Not really, after all, some special potions can produce similar effects, but... it’s not very meaningful."
Lanadi was no ordinary person and naturally knew that special potions could allow Spirit Beasts to retain their pre-evolution form. However, the drawbacks of these potions were also evident; changing forms would limit their power, and if there was a possibility to surpass evolution, one wouldn’t necessarily want to abandon their current form and could instead opt for a transcedent evolution.
As he stroked the fluffy feathers on Xiao Ji, Feng Yuan said with a smile,
"Don’t you think the Eggshell Chicken feels very nice to the touch?"
Lanadi looked at Feng Yuan with a hint of amusement and said,
"I never thought your focus would be so peculiar, but now that you mention it, indeed."
After all, the Eggshell Chicken was covered in downy feathers, and most bird-type Spirit Beasts after evolution would mainly have actual feathers, the same was true for the Big Cat. Although its white feathers were relatively soft, that softness was only relative.
Xiao Ji happily snuggled in Feng Yuan’s arms, and provocatively glanced at Little Ice Cream on Feng Yuan’s shoulder. The latter took one look at Xiao Ji and then closed its eyes and curled up into a ball, its small inverted cone-shaped legs tucked away out of sight, making it look like a scoop of ice cream had accidentally landed on Feng Yuan’s shoulder.
"Hey? You haven’t been waiting here all night, have you?" Feng Yuan looked at He Nanqing with some surprise. The latter smiled and said,
"It’s alright. Do you need me to prepare guest rooms for you?"
