Chapter 892: Chapter 893 Guardian
"Alright, that’s the deep Netherworld, even its bottom layer. You simply can’t handle it with your approach, and you might even stir up the Ghost-type Divine Beasts that patrol the area."
Feng Yuan said somewhat speechlessly, and Agunas paused, looking puzzled at Feng Yuan as he asked,
"The bottom layer of the Netherworld? How could that place be connected to the real world?"
"Don’t know, it could be an accident or some other reason, but I estimate that there must be some problems in the Netherworld right now, or it wouldn’t be like this."
Feng Yuan’s eyebrows furrowed slightly. The Netherworld’s space is quite special, unlike the Dream Domain and other places that have Divine Beasts in control of the overall situation. However, by contrast, the space of Netherworld is quite stable, and it’s difficult for such situations to arise. And with the Ghost-type Divine Beasts watching over it, no one would dare cause destruction there.
After thinking it over, Feng Yuan flipped open the Dark Ancient Book in his hand and with a swipe, a black Rune Circle appeared and swiftly expanded to encompass the spatial rift. The spatial rift deformed within the Rune Circle, being stretched to cover the inside of the circle and forming a round Space Gate.
"Let’s go over and see what the situation is."
Feng Yuan looked back at Lanadi and Gladys. After a thought, he didn’t stop them from following, stepping into the Space Gate. Xiao Ji jerked, letting out a cry of an eagle as a pale blue flame ignited on its body, and a black steed looked at Xiao Ji with some confusion.
Lanadi watched the translucent black steed in surprise. Blue flames burned on its hooves, and strange light points floated around its body, which upon closer inspection, were all fragments of souls.
The black steed snorted doubtfully at Xiao Ji, who fearlessly met its gaze. Agunas flicked his tail and asked,
"Long Boduo, are you the one guarding the bottom layer now?"
After a snort, Long Boduo disdainfully glanced at Feng Yuan and his companions and said something in a peculiar tone. After a moment, Agunas spoke,
"You’d better use human language, otherwise he won’t understand you. If you want to deal with this, you’re probably going to need his help."
Long Boduo looked skeptically at Feng Yuan. It couldn’t understand what was so special about this small human that Agunas would talk about him like this. Feng Yuan said impatiently,
"I know you don’t like talking with humans, but I’m not asking you to tell me anything. Just don’t cause me any trouble."
With that, he took out the Dark Ancient Book and threw it vigorously. Runes flowed out from the book, spreading in all directions. Long Boduo was startled and somewhat taken aback by this spectacle.
Xiao Ji strangely looked around the area, which was very open. There wasn’t a single plant on the surrounding land, and the black soil seemed to be filled with the Breath of Death. A cold, clear moon hung high in the sky, but what puzzled Xiao Ji was that the moon seemed somehow abnormal—as if it were a living being on the brink of weakness?
"It looks like the problem isn’t small—out of the one hundred and eight pillars, thirty-seven have been seriously damaged, and there are damages in another fifty-two. What exactly happened here?"
Feng Yuan wondered. The Netherworld Pillars in the bottom layer of the Netherworld aren’t something just anyone can damage. To inflict harm on them, Sacred Beast level power is the minimum, and without the strength of Divine Beast level, it would be impossible to damage them. And yet, there were no traces of a great battle here. Why would the Netherworld Pillars be like this?
"Don’t know. The Netherworld has been unstable recently, and we don’t know why,"
Long Boduo’s voice came with a somber tone. This time, it was in the common language of the Divine Land Region, so the three present could understand what it was saying. Agunas asked with some confusion,
"You don’t know about the damage to the Netherworld Pillars?"
Shaking its huge head, Long Boduo said,
"Unaware, or rather, we simply can’t check those things. You don’t understand, the Netherworld Pillars are not so easily approached."
"Enveloped with a strong Breath of Death, after all, that is where the pillars that support the Netherworld reside. Unless you are a Death-series Divine Beast, if you want to get close, you can only use your own power to withstand that terrible Breath of Death. But if you do that, you probably won’t have much energy left to properly check on the Netherworld Pillars,"
Feng Yuan said thoughtfully, and in fact, that was also a self-protection mechanism of the Netherworld Pillars. Otherwise, if they were easily approached, there would always be those mad enough to cause trouble. Veronia looked around and said,
"The question now is how do we repair the Netherworld Pillars? The cause of the damage can be dealt with later, right?"
"That’s true. If we don’t act quickly, we’re going to have a real problem,"
Feng Yuan said with a headache. The Netherworld Pillars support the entire Netherworld, and if there is a problem, it’s not only the Netherworld that will fall into chaos. The real world too won’t be spared, just like how the Breath of Death is now entering places blessed by numerous Divine Beasts, all sorts of chaotic and abnormal things that shouldn’t appear in reality are showing up.
"How does one go about it? What do we need to repair the Netherworld Pillar?"
Agunas looked toward Feng Yuan and asked, shaking the Dark Ancient Book in his hand. Feng Yuan said,
"It’s simple, just use this."
"We don’t need any other materials?"
Agunas, somewhat skeptical, Feng Yuan glanced at him and said irritably,
"What do you think could be used as the Netherworld Pillar? It’s faster to rely on its power."
Long Boduo hesitated for a moment, looked at Xiao Ji standing by Feng Yuan’s side and said,
"Then, please, come with me."
"Tsk! So urgent, I fear it’s going to be an all-nighter again."
Feng Yuan complained somewhat dissatisfied, Agunas glanced at Feng Yuan and said,
"Shall I help you with it?"
"Never mind, you won’t be able to handle it. Some things are quite troublesome."
Shaking his head, Feng Yuan said somewhat helplessly. If he could, he naturally would like to leave it to Agunas to handle. Repairing the Netherworld Pillar was no joke, though. A slip could cause larger damage, and the problem could be much bigger. Moreover, he also harbored some doubts about what exactly caused the massive damage to the Netherworld Pillar.
On the desolate Nether Soil, the trio followed Long Boduo, the unchanging scenery all around made Feng Yuan yawn continuously, Lanadi said with some disbelief,
"Is this place always like this?"
"No plants whatsoever, just this vast expanse of barren land?"
Feng Yuan turned his head and looked at Lanadi,
"Odd? After all, this is the most important place in the Netherworld. Maintaining this kind of unique singular environment can prevent unnecessary accidents. The more complex things are, the more accidents they bring. Don’t you all know that?"
Feng Yuan was somewhat puzzled. Ordinary people are one thing, but Lanadi and Gladys were members of the Mordan Clan. They could simply glimpse the future to understand these matters. Shaking his head, Lanadi looked ahead at Long Boduo and said,
"I just... don’t understand. If that’s the case, facing this environment every day, can they really... bear it?"
"Shouldn’t be a problem, they take turns patrolling, and they have ways to communicate."
Although Ghost-type Divine Beasts rarely appeared before humans, they were still part of the Divine Beasts, and their relations with other Divine Beasts weren’t bad. It seemed it wasn’t a problem for them to chat with other Divine Beasts while patrolling. Agunas flicked its tail and said,
"No wonder Ghost-type Divine Beasts are almost all chatterboxes."
It understood why, in the Divine Beast intelligence network, those Ghost-type Divine Beasts always liked chatting with other Divine Beasts. It wasn’t the torment of this layer of the Netherworld. It also realized that maintaining this kind of primitive environment was more beneficial for the Netherworld as a whole. As Feng Yuan had said, if they planted all sorts of plants and raised all sorts of animals, nobody would know when someone might accidentally damage the Netherworld Pillar.
Although the probability was small, it indeed significantly increased the likelihood of such incidents. A hint of red crossed Long Boduo’s dark equine face; they had kept this matter well concealed in the past, as other Divine Beasts wouldn’t usually venture to such places. But now that Agunas had discovered it, all of their previous excuses would be useless.
Just then, the ground trembled unexpectedly. Feng Yuan, somewhat startled, stopped in his tracks and looked around. He threw the Dark Ancient Book into the air. The book floated and slowly opened mid-air, black ripples emanating from it and spreading in all directions. Agunas, puzzled, looked toward Feng Yuan and said,
"What’s wrong?"
"Something’s off. Why would there be an earthquake here?"
Veronia frowned slightly. Unlike Agunas, it had once presided over an entire world, and so naturally knew how different spatial structures might have different special characteristics. The bottom layer of the Netherworld was part of the fundamental structure and shouldn’t be subject to something like earthquakes.
