Chapter 876: Chapter 877: Specialty Store
"Local specialties? No, there aren’t any."
After effortful recollection, Feng Yuan shook his head and said that Maomu City was just an ordinary southern city without any specialties that seemed particularly unique to him. After thinking, he added,
"However, Cha Mu Town’s Yun tea could be considered a local specialty, but Cha Mu Town is quite far from here and, strictly speaking, it’s not really a part of the urban area of Maomu City."
"In terms of places worth exploring within the city limits, frankly, there aren’t any. For modern products, I’d recommend you go to top-tier cities like Shenhua Shangjing to shop. Of course, if you want to look around here, the department store area is probably the most comprehensive."
Lanadi expressed some confusion,
"There really aren’t any local specialties or characteristic places? That can’t be right. Even Mordan has many characteristic local products."
Shrugging, Feng Yuan helplessly said,
"There’s nothing particularly famous within the city limits. Yun Tea is one, but its main producing areas are Cha Mu Town and Liantang Town’s aquatic products aren’t bad, but they’re far from being considered local specialties. As for other wood carvings and such, they don’t really have a local character."
"Is that so? I remember they also recommended a ’Local Specialties Street’ to me. Was there nothing interesting there?"
Gladys seemed doubtful, as the Special Duty Team had referred her to the ’Local Specialties Street’ when she showed interest in buying some souvenirs.
"Well, Local Specialties Street, I’ve heard of it, but it doesn’t seem very impressive. Hold on, let me ask Qi Chen."
Having thought it over, Feng Yuan took out his phone. Guessing wasn’t helpful; it was better to ask a local.
"Calling for help? Looks like he’s not too familiar with the area either~"
Gladys smiled and said. Although they weren’t very clear about Feng Yuan’s background, they could guess that he wasn’t a local resident of the city or that he might not have lived locally in Maomu City before attending high school. It seemed that their guess was right.
"It indeed isn’t great."
Observing the quaint street, Feng Yuan sighed. Although Qi Chen also said there was nothing special about the local products, Gladys wanted to check it out, so the three of them still walked along the Local Specialties Street. As expected, the place only had some small handicrafts.
As for local character? Feng Yuan didn’t think Maomu City had any connection to Divine Beasts like Kui Shui Xuanwu. Gladys, holding her face in her hand, said with a headache,
"It seems you were right, there’s nothing worth picking as a gift."
"Gift?"
Lanadi looked at Gladys, puzzled. If she remembered correctly, Camille was right with her, wasn’t she? Although they hadn’t come out together today, they should be in touch with each other. Buying gifts here? It didn’t seem like her kind of thing.
"It’s for people back home. Although they aren’t very nice to me, I wouldn’t say they’re terribly wrong."
Gladys sighed and looked around the stores with a headache. Though the specialties seemed nice, none had local character; nearly all were just on par with commercial center folklore goods.
"As for gifts, if you start from the Maomu Grand Library and make a round of museums throughout Maomu City, you should be able to gather them."
"The Grand Library?"
Gladys, perplexed, listened as Agunas flicked his tail and said dryly,
"You really have a deep attachment to the Grand Library, don’t you? Why do you enjoy going there so much?"
"Because it’s interesting, isn’t it? Such a large library, with so many different functional zones~"
"You mean museum souvenirs?"
After contemplating, Lanadi nodded and said,
"Right, compared to these uncharacteristic local product shops, museum souvenirs might be more refined."
"Ha, so Dou Yanlan was right."
Observing a small quaint shop surprised Feng Yuan who spoke. Lanadi, still surprised, assessed the shop they found inside the History and Literature Museum, Section Three of the Maomu Grand Library. Without a sign hanging outside, and decorated in an old-fashion, it could easily be missed as a souvenir shop if one just walked by without entering.
"Welcome, all items have small tags, please handle with care and mind not to damage any merchandise."
The woman dressed in simple traditional robes put down the book in her hands and glanced at Feng Yuan and his party, somewhat surprised by the two foreign women following him. However, it wasn’t too odd, since her place wasn’t a secret venue and regular customers often introduced friends to visit.
"This is nice, definitely better than those small trinkets on the shelf."
Feng Yuan immediately took interest in the tea cakes that seemed to be carelessly piled on the table. Gladys, puzzled, looked at them and asked,
"What’s the story here?"
"The price might be a bit steep, but it’s really good stuff. What do you say? Shall we take them all in one go?"
Feng Yuan didn’t reach out but proudly pointed at the tea cakes. Gladys was still puzzled as she glanced at him, while the woman remarked in surprise, putting down her book and sizing up Feng Yuan with relentless curiosity. She hadn’t expected someone to really recognize the value.
"It seems there’s more to these."
Lanadi observed the tea cakes with astonishment, having previously ignored them. But after Feng Yuan’s comment, she inspected them carefully and immediately noticed something odd. The tea cakes, casually displayed, were actually well-preserved, shielded by a thin layer of special energy film, almost invisible but recognizable to her as an exceptionally unique preservation technique.
The production of that energy film was extremely difficult, and there were probably only a few places in Great Xia that had factories producing it.
"A special interference-free film for preserving spiritual medicine? Anyone using this technology is no simple entity."
Lanadi spoke out loud. While she couldn’t identify the tea cakes themselves, she recognized the preservation technique. The woman appeared surprised at Lanadi’s words but seemed less concerned than before.
Feng Yuan looked at Lanadi and said,
"Top-grade Yun Tea from Cha Mu Town, produced in extremely limited amounts each year. It’s unclear what’s the situation here that they’d have so many."
"Top-grade Yun Tea?"
The two looked puzzled, and Feng Yuan nodded,
"Yes, that faint intercompatibility of water and fire energy is characteristic of top-grade Yun Tea. It has always been produced in small quantities annually, so seeing it now, of course, I’d opt to buy. What do you think? If you don’t want them, I will take them~"
"It sounds like a good product~"
Gladys suddenly became interested. The tea cakes didn’t seem much different from others to her, but could it be something remarkable?
"Does it have a special use?"
Lanadi wasn’t uninterested in products purely for enjoyment, it’s just that she wasn’t fond of tea. Feng Yuan glanced at Xiao Ji and said,
"Yes, if Spirit Beasts consume it long-term, there’s a chance they can specially awaken hidden fire-element or water-element attributes. It’s a very special kind of spiritual medicine that isn’t actually a spiritual medicine, but more importantly, it tastes great~"
Hearing Feng Yuan’s words, Xiao Ji’s eyes twinkled as if recalling something then it lost interest. There was no help for it—if it were still an Eggshell Chicken, perhaps it would have cared more. But now that it had evolved, it could already manipulate those special Death Series flames, so whether it had the fire attribute didn’t much matter to it. As for water attribute?
Being all wet felt utterly uncomfortable, and it definitely didn’t want any additional water attributes.
"Impressive! You really can recognize it."
The woman clapped her hands in amazement and stood up to address Feng Yuan. She didn’t expect the youngest looking among the three to know about these things. Feng Yuan said proudly,
"Of course, I was actually planning on getting some last year, but then I got busy and forgot. I didn’t expect to find this year’s new tea here."
Speaking of that, Feng Yuan felt a bit regretful. He had originally planned this year to ask He Nanqing to reserve some top-grade Yun Tea for him, but then got caught up with designated chores and forgot. He had thought he’d missed out this year but was pleasantly surprised to find an unexpected treasure here.
"It looks like you genuinely understand."
The woman stated in surprise, as someone unfamiliar with Yun Tea wouldn’t be able to differentiate between new and old tea. Gladys, still puzzled, looked at Feng Yuan and asked,
"Is there a difference?"
"There certainly is. New tea has better effects and taste. If stored too long, both its effects and taste deteriorate considerably, although generally, no one keeps it that long."
"It seems quite good~"
Gladys mused as she eyed the tea cakes on the table.
