Chapter 764: Chapter 765 Garden Puzzle_1
"Not so,"Dou Yanlan picked up the doll with an unchanged face. As for the ghosts that kept changing tactics to scare her? They seemed to have no effect. Feng Yuan watched Qi Chen with a strange expression and, noticing Feng Yuan’s look, Qi Chen snapped,
"What are you thinking about now!"
"Pfft! Big Cat, I’m leaving it to you."
Although the puzzles here might not be particularly difficult, Feng Yuan had already sensed the malice within them. He estimated that the ghosts and such were minor concerns, but it was obvious that the other party would not stop unless they took this opportunity to scare people more. Even though he was holding Xiao Ji, Feng Yuan still felt somewhat hair-raising fear.
"You, of all people, are afraid of this thing?"
Agunas looked at Feng Yuan in surprise; it could naturally guess that Feng Yuan let Big Cat out to solve the puzzles because he was scared. Standing back, Feng Yuan hummed,
"Can’t I be weak, pitiable, and helpless?"
Flicking its tail, Agunas couldn’t be bothered with Feng Yuan, who had thick skin. At this time, many timid students, just like Feng Yuan, stayed far away from the things that seemed like traps. Friends who were braver made fun of their scared friends. Although the center of the garden was not very large, the dispersal of people in search of puzzle answers caused them to stand quite spread out.
"It shouldn’t be a problem, right?"
Feng Yuan had an ominously bad hunch. Now that everyone was quite dispersed and although the black liquid showed no signs of invading the center of the garden, Feng Yuan felt that things couldn’t be that simple. Just obtaining the props and triggering those scare tactics seemed not to be very effective.
"Aah!!!"
Suddenly, a scream startled everyone who was working on the puzzles. The scream seemed to be cut off midway, and everyone hastily looked towards the source of the scream, only to see a pool of black liquid gradually sinking into the white marble floor.
"As expected..."
"Damn!"
Caught off guard, Feng Yuan found himself surrounded by the black liquid. Xiao Ji, held in his arms, immediately wanted to take action, but Feng Yuan tightly hugged Xiao Ji to prevent it from moving.
"Qi Chen! Hurry up!"
After leaving these words, Feng Yuan was swallowed up by the black liquid. Hearing Feng Yuan’s shout, Qi Chen and Dou Yanlan hurriedly rushed toward the spot where Feng Yuan disappeared.
"Wouldn’t it be fine if you just solve the puzzle quickly? That guy is holding Xiao Ji; he can’t be scared at all."
Agunas, seeing these two getting into the scene, spoke disapprovingly. Hearing Agunas’s words, Dou Yanlan and Qi Chen instantly realized that this was just a game, that guy was not in any danger, and besides, Xiao Ji was with him. If they wanted to scare him, they might end up being scared by Xiao Ji instead.
"It’s pitch black; I can’t see anything..."
Feng Yuan, holding Xiao Ji, complained. As for the random creepy noises, Feng Yuan found them too annoying and used Xiao Ji’s power to block them out.
Xiao Ji rubbed against Feng Yuan in dissatisfaction. If he had let it act earlier, it wouldn’t have been trapped in such a place. Stroking Xiao Ji’s belly, Feng Yuan said with a bit of amusement,
"Stop fussing. If we really did that, wouldn’t we be breaking the rules of the game?"
"Although I have the power to flip the table at any moment, there’s no need for that, right?"
"But it’s kind of boring in the pitch dark..."
Although he was holding Xiao Ji and couldn’t use his hands to check his phone, Feng Yuan thought it was more likely that even if he took out his phone, there would be no signal in this special space.
Xiao Ji cried out loudly and bunches of pale blue flames ignited beside Feng Yuan. However, the blue flames only illuminated Feng Yuan and Xiao Ji in his arms; the surroundings remained pitch-black, unknown whether it was because they were not lit up or if they were naturally so.
Pressing Xiao Ji’s belly, Feng Yuan said with a smirk,
"You, after evolving, your little belly isn’t as soft as before."
Xiao Ji turned its head away in dissatisfaction. How could it fly if it remained as fat as before? Suddenly, Xiao Ji sensed something and looked around before letting out a puzzled cry.
Feng Yuan, patting Xiao Ji’s head, said with a bit of a chuckle
"Pomiti is sprawled on top of my head, and Little Green Snake didn’t get pulled in, what’s up?"
Upon hearing that he wasn’t alone with Feng Yuan, Xiao Ji suddenly felt a bit disappointed. Realizing Xiao Ji’s disappointment, Feng Yuan poked Xiao Ji’s forehead speechlessly and said
"What on earth are you thinking about? Do you really dislike Pomiti and Little Green Snake that much?"
Xiao Ji hastened to refute, but with Agunas not by its side, and being held by Feng Yuan, it simply couldn’t explain itself clearly. After a while, seeing Xiao Ji getting increasingly anxious, Feng Yuan smiled and said
"Alright, little vinegar jar, no need to explain, I know you don’t dislike them."
...
Unlike Feng Yuan, who was leisurely chatting and joking with Xiao Ji in the dark space, the pressure on the students solving puzzles was mounting, because the group had been scattered. Their numbers were dwindling, even though they were careful to move in larger groups as much as possible. Still, various ’accidents’ occurred, causing people to end up alone and be swallowed by the black liquid.
"Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. I believe that if everyone gets swallowed by the darkness, it’ll just be a reset, hasn’t the endless corridor already proven that?"
Chen Xin, seeing the atmosphere growing more oppressive, hurriedly spoke up. In fact, even if she hadn’t reminded them, the staff behind the scenes would not continue to add pressure. After all, creating a sense of horror is one thing, but an actual accident is quite another, and they were quite good at gauging this balance.
They could basically make people feel panicky without actually frightening them to the point of causing issues. The remaining people buoyed each other’s spirits and continued to try vigorously to solve the central puzzle of the garden completely.
"What exactly is the deal with this garden? All these things are just a mess, making no sense at all."
Scratching his head, Qi Chen muttered to himself with some agitation. By now, the group had found quite a few materials through searching and solving puzzles, even a family photo and dolls representing each person in the picture.
But this wasn’t useful at all. Whether they placed the dolls on stone benches according to potential relevance or tried other methods, they couldn’t find the key link that connected all these elements together.
"Could there be some crucial point we’ve missed?"
At this suggestion, someone immediately countered
"How could that be possible? The dolls, the family photo, and that eerie nursery rhyme—it’s quite clear that the puzzle here is related to the family."
"Then how are we supposed to solve it? We’ve searched everywhere and found no place to put the dolls."
"Could it be like the corridor, with some time constraint?"
"What now? You want to give up?!"
"What’s the use of persisting pointlessly if the core clues have vanished?!"
Seeing the group starting to argue amongst themselves, Chen Xin quickly stepped forward to mediate. She did not wish to see a well-intended collective effort turn into strife among classmates.
Holding the paper with the eerie nursery rhyme, Dou Yanlan pondered as though considering something, while Qi Chen glanced at the words. Perhaps to avoid complaints from visitors, the nursery rhyme just seemed a bit odd, like the ramblings of a lunatic. It was about a little girl who, for some unknown reason, conducted an evil ritual.
One by one, her family members disappeared during the ritual until she realized her terrible mistake. By then, the girl had only her brother by her side. They brought their family back through a series of bizarre rituals, but it wasn’t until the end that they realized what they had brought back were not their relatives but demons that merely resembled them. In the end, the girl’s brother laid down the final ritual and led her away from the family that had fallen into darkness.
"Rituals, huh..."
Dou Yanlan looked enigmatically at the assorted materials they had unearthed and, after some thought, turned to Chen Xin and said
"I remember seeing quite a few sticky notes with locations written on them earlier, didn’t we?"
"Yes, this is one of them."
Chen Xin casually handed over a sticky note with a bloody handprint on it. Everyone had just passed these around to each other. The writings on these notes were strange: some seemed like formulas for potions, while others appeared to be recipes, each containing a bizarre assortment of information, all invariably marked with various kinds of bloodstains.
"Did you discover something?"
Chen Xin looked curiously at Dou Yanlan, and the others couldn’t help but prick up their ears; despite not wanting to admit it, they were still utterly confused.
