Chapter 1285: Chapter 1286: The Past

The Inferno Mastiff and the Flower Bud were walking through this garden, familiar yet strange. Placing the Flower Bud upon its head, the Inferno Mastiff slowly strolled within the garden. Expanded by Agunas, this garden was reminiscent of the one it and the Flower Bud once guarded together. It must have been so hard for her, the Inferno Mastiff thought quietly, letting out a low growl.

Sitting atop the Inferno Mastiff’s head, the Flower Bud chirped happily. After such a long wait, the giant wolf that had protected her in the past had finally returned~ Although its size was far larger than before, to her, the fact that it came back was all that mattered.

"Oh~ What a coincidence~"

Encountering the strolling Inferno Mastiff and Flower Bud, Feng Yuan raised his right hand and smiled as he greeted them. Agunas glanced at Feng Yuan speechlessly—what kind of coincidence was this? Unless Feng Yuan left the garden, it was only a matter of time before they ran into each other. Sitting atop the Inferno Mastiff, the Flower Bud chirped cheerfully while the old man silently followed at a distance behind the two Spirit Beasts.

As for the Flower Bud and the Inferno Mastiff, he felt he had some guesses. Perhaps it would choose to stay here. He didn’t feel any regret about this—they had helped far too much during the Guardian War. They had no reason nor ground to demand it continue guarding Quersan, especially considering that the Inferno Mastiff’s abilities were merely at a Legendary level.

In present-day Quersan, Beastmasters of Legendary strength were no longer rare. What he was pondering now was how to negotiate with Kalta’s leadership to provide assistance for it.

"That spot seems interesting, let’s go check it out~"

Pointing toward the nearby fountain, Feng Yuan ignored Xiao Ji’s displeasure and took her along. Naturally, he had noticed that the Inferno Mastiff and Flower Bud hadn’t yet had their fill of this rare reunion. Whatever he wanted to ask could wait.

Seeing Feng Yuan pull Xiao Ji away, Qi Chen glanced at the Inferno Mastiff and then at Feng Yuan before chasing after him with Ah Mu in tow.

The fountain, after being enlarged, now looked more like a small pond. Xiao Ji hid behind Feng Yuan, her eyes darting warily toward the fountain. Though she was still reluctant to approach water, the aversion wasn’t as strong as before. Patting Xiao Ji’s head with amusement, Feng Yuan said:

"You, huh. Alright, let’s go; let’s check out that area."

Qi Chen hesitated for a moment before pulling Feng Yuan aside and asking:

"What exactly are you doing? Why are you wandering about aimlessly?"

"I’m curious about their story. Otherwise, I would’ve left already. Don’t you find it intriguing—what happened between the Flower Bud and the Inferno Mastiff?"

Chuckling, Feng Yuan replied. If he weren’t curious, he wouldn’t have chosen to stay. While the enlarged garden had its own unique charm, at the end of the day, it was just an old, dilapidated garden. No matter how much you expand it, it still remains the same.

After a long while, the Flower Bud and Inferno Mastiff finally finished their conversation. Feng Yuan estimated that they must have circled the garden several times before they were done. But this was hardly surprising—after such a long separation, there was much to catch up on. His patience wasn’t for nothing, as the Inferno Mastiff began explaining their past to Feng Yuan.

Originally, the Inferno Mastiff and Flower Bud lived peacefully in Kalta Town. At that time, the Inferno Mastiff was still a Flame Wolfhound. Together, they defended this garden, enjoying a tranquil life. Whenever the Flower Bud faced danger, it was always the Flame Wolfhound that would stand in front of her to protect her.

They lived like family in this serene little town until the Flame Wolfhound uncovered the truth of why the Flower Bud had left her species—she couldn’t evolve! Even though the Flame Wolfhound gathered the necessary items for evolution, the Flower Bud still couldn’t evolve. After seeking help from the stray Spirit Beasts in Kalta and finding no solutions, the Flame Wolfhound turned its sights on Quersan, the place known for its Origin Flower Field.

Since the Origin Flower Field was one of Dantia’s floral origins, there had to be a way to heal the Flower Bud, a Spirit Beast in floral form. With that thought in mind, the Flame Wolfhound bid farewell to the Flower Bud, asking her to hide in the garden and promising to return for her.

However, shortly after arriving in Quersan, the Guardian War erupted in full force. Unable to bear the suffering of Quersan’s civilians, the Flame Wolfhound took action. The aftermath was something Feng Yuan and the others knew well—it was injured during the war, forgotten Kalta, forgot the Flower Bud, and forgot the promise it had made. Deep within its heart, however, the promise lingered.

The torment of searching for its forgotten memories haunted it for a long time, until Feng Yuan encountered it, finally bringing the Chapter to a close.

After hearing the Inferno Mastiff’s story, Feng Yuan stroked his chin and looked at Agunas, asking:

"What’s your take on this?"

"Spirit Beasts don’t normally have issues with evolution. I haven’t examined that Flower Bud, so I’m not sure what the problem is."

"As for the Origin Flower Field... it’s unlikely it holds a solution."

Staring at the Inferno Mastiff, Agunas remarked. Of course, the Mastiff probably already understood this, which was why it had come back. Najia jumped in front of the Flower Bud sitting on the Inferno Mastiff’s head, reaching out a hand to lightly touch the Flower Bud. A starry sky began to shimmer around them. After a while, Najia shook his head and said:

"No. I can’t detect any anomalies."

As Feng Yuan remained silent, Agunas floated forward to inspect the Flower Bud’s condition. Holding her ornate parasol, Veronia gazed at Feng Yuan and asked:

"What’s your opinion?"

"An internal injury, similar to hers. Fixing it... is quite troubling."

Feng Yuan remarked, sneaking a glance at Xiao Ji. She didn’t notice his gaze, remaining fixated on the Flower Bud and Inferno Mastiff. She hadn’t imagined there was such a history between them. Following Feng Yuan’s line of sight, Veronia understood. So, the Flower Bud had likely sustained internal injuries even prior to birth.

Those injuries had impeded its evolution. Though hard to believe, for someone like Veronia, it wasn’t beyond acceptance. Such occurrences had been recorded during the Mythical Era. Even so, Veronia didn’t have any solutions for this. But judging by Feng Yuan’s demeanor, it seemed he might have something up his sleeve?

This wasn’t surprising—after all, Feng Yuan hadn’t initially planned to allow Xiao Ji to transform into a Divine Beast. Only later, unable to resist her pleading, had he conceded and let her decide for herself.

"After recovery, will its strength...?"

"No way. When evolution is affected to such a degree, how could it not impact strength? However, it’s alright—Flower Buds inherently lack formidable combat prowess anyway, and with him around, everything will be fine~"

Smiling, Feng Yuan said while glancing at the Inferno Mastiff. Twirling her parasol, Veronia asked:

"What kind of preparations do you need?"

"Raw materials—plenty of them. Some are on land, but others are located beneath the Starlit Sea and in Starry Heaven."

Gazing at the Flower Bud, Feng Yuan spoke softly, while Veronia gently tapped her shoulder where her Droplet Bubble rested.

"I’ll search for the land-based materials. As for the Starlit Sea and Starry Heaven, aren’t there helpers right here?"

She believed that if needed, Agunas would wear Delong Tower down until they agreed to assist. As for Starry Heaven? Judging by Najia’s current urgency, it was clear there wouldn’t be any issues.

"Hehe, then I’ll leave it to you all~"

Saying this, Feng Yuan listed the necessary materials. The old man who had been eavesdropping gasped upon hearing the items Feng Yuan mentioned. There was no helping it—those materials were far beyond his reach. Despite being Legendary-level as a Beastmaster, with a significant foundation built over time, he still couldn’t gather those items. Evidently, even if others knew how to solve the problem, they’d still fall short.

At that moment, Agunas floated back, realizing he had no solutions himself. He knew Feng Yuan was hiding something. As Agunas stared at him, Feng Yuan stepped back, letting Veronia mediate the conversation with Agunas. Ultimately, the decision to assist lay in Agunas’ hands.

Gazing at the Flower Bud, Feng Yuan wasn’t sure whether healing her would truly be better—just like Xiao Ji. To this day, he still hadn’t figured out whether his actions back then were right or wrong.

After conversing with the Flower Bud and Inferno Mastiff, Agunas and the others split up. Najia began chanting loudly to summon the powers of Starry Heaven, directly heading toward that realm. There was no choice—the materials were highly peculiar, and using powers to retrieve them could lead to major complications.

With Agunas and the others gone, Feng Yuan’s group stayed overnight in Kalta Town. Fortunately, the town had ample guest rooms. The old man took the Inferno Mastiff to camp just outside the town. There was no alternative, as the Mastiff couldn’t shrink its form and was too large to stay in the town proper.
