Chapter 1001: Chapter 102: Once Upon a Time
"Can you help it?"
Just as everyone was finishing admiring the flowers and preparing to leave, Veronia suddenly spoke up. The flower boy looked at her questioningly, not understanding what was happening. Agunas eyed her suspiciously, not knowing what she was going on about, and chuckled before Veronia said,
"Don’t you think it’s pitiful?"
The flower boy swayed the lotus leaf stalk he held in his hand—water droplets fell from the lotus leaf at the top, swinging with his movements. Veronia looked at the ancient tree and said,
"That tree’s life is almost at its end, I’m sure you know that."
"So what?"
Feng Yuan looked at Veronia oddly, and the flower boy shook his head with a smile, seeming to understand. Agunas spoke skeptically,
"How can that be? That tree’s vitality is so immense."
"There’s nothing impossible about it. It’s just a Spirit Plant after all, and they ultimately have a lifespan limit."
As Veronia said this, her gaze fixed on Feng Yuan, she shrugged and turned to the flower boy,
"It didn’t bring it up; what do you say?"
Stunned for a moment, Veronia said with some dissatisfaction,
"But it doesn’t know that you have that ability. Tell it, you have a way to help treat it."
Seeing Veronia urging him somewhat anxiously, the flower boy just smiled and shook his head, sighed, and Feng Yuan said,
"It might not really need that, and what you are doing might not be appropriate."
Seeing Veronia’s puzzled face, Feng Yuan smiled and said,
"Sometimes, letting go is not necessarily a bad thing. Carrying the past forward is not always easy. It’s a pity, easy to say but I can’t do it myself."
The flower boy reached out his little hand and gently patted Feng Yuan’s pants; his height meant he could only reach such a place to console him. Casually hugging Xiao Ji next to him, Feng Yuan looked at Veronia and said,
"Why don’t you ask it yourself if it needs help?"
Seeing the flower boy continuously shaking his head at her, Veronia was puzzled. Agunas also seemed a bit lost, but Yun You seemed to understand something. Walking over, he hugged the flower boy and whispered something. After a while, the flower boy joyfully called out to Yun You a few times and jumped onto the ancient tree, gently humming something.
Hesitant for a moment, Veronia reached out her hand as if to do something but quickly withdrew it, looking at the flower boy who was now humming an ancient melody. Though Feng Yuan wasn’t well-versed in music, he could guess it likely belonged to the Dynasty Era style—different times, different environments, and different preferences always had their distinctions.
Without interrupting the flower boy’s humming, Veronia waited a long time until he finished singing. Only then did she speak up and ask something. Hearing Veronia’s question, the flower boy looked at her with some surprise, as if he couldn’t quite believe it, while Agunas flicked his tail, apparently somewhat displeased.
Veronia gently touched the mottled bark of the ancient tree, a hazy light enveloped the garden, and everything around slowly transformed. Seeing the land gradually become desolate, it didn’t take much questioning for Feng Yuan to guess that this scene belonged to the past. Moments later, the area reverted to its original state—no flowers, no ancient trees, just a shallow pool of water.
The Flower Leaf Spirit Child ran around, seemingly nostalgic. Suddenly, it stiffened with excitement as it saw the middle-aged man walking toward them with a light blue spherical Spirit Beast. The man had a scar across his face, wore slightly tattered clothes, and clutched a worn halberd in his hand.
Embracing Xiao Ji, Feng Yuan understood something—the light blue Spirit Beast with leaves atop its head was Little Leaf Child, one of the previous evolutionary stages of the Flower Leaf Child. It seemed that the man might have been its former companion.
Xiao Ji saw the middle-aged man with the Little Leaf Child digging a hole at the location of the ancient tree and planting a seed. Its tail feathers shook, seemingly tempted. Should it talk to him and maybe find a place to create a garden together? Xiao Ji whimsically thought.
Big Cat squeezed beside Feng Yuan, quietly meowing. Although it hadn’t personally experienced such events, it had heard some Stray Spirit Beasts that passed through Maomu City talk about such experiences, so it could guess what was about to happen. Feng Yuan smiled, released Xiao Ji, and extended his hand to softly rub Big Cat’s belly, asking,
"How about you? Perhaps you’ve experienced something similar before?"
Big Cat meowed and shook its head in denial. Meanwhile, Veronia and Agunas watched intently as the middle-aged man and the Little Leaf Child periodically tended to the planted seed, watching the sprout break through the soil. The Little Leaf Child joyfully hopped around the man, calling out while he smiled as if saying something.
In a storm, unsure about the plant, the Little Leaf Child braved the storm to check on it, forcing the man to follow in the heavy rain. Seeing the man’s helpless expression, Flower Leaf Child smiled knowingly. Seeing the plant fearless in the storm, the Little Leaf Child looked embarrassedly at the drenched man who smiled and patted its head, murmuring something.
As the plant grew, the visits from Little Leaf Child became more frequent, but the occurrences of the middle-aged man grew less. Veronia slightly puzzled, watched as Little Leaf Child arrived with a blood-stained Long Halberd, its demeanor so disheartened as if it had lost something precious. Veronia and Agunas understood what happened, glanced at the Flower Leaf Child, which, upon seeing this, shed tears and shook its tail; Agunas murmured softly,
"After all, it’s the Dynasty Era..."
Though the day was sunny, for Little Leaf Child, it appeared utterly bleak. Silently burying the blood-stained halberd beneath the young tree, it reluctantly turned back thrice before leaving, and the land once more regained its tranquility, other than the occasional visits from Little Leaf Child to check and care for the young tree.
"Is this what the Dynasty Era was like..."
Qi Chen muttered to himself while looking at Ah Mu beside him, unsure of what to feel—after all, Spirit Beasts lived much longer than humans, and even he couldn’t always be with Ah Mu. But, like the Flower Leaf Child...
Ah Mu extended its arms to gently embrace Qi Chen, the leaves of the canopy rustling without wind as he gently patted Ah Mu’s coarse arm, Qi Chen murmured softly,
"Sorry..."
Shaking its head, Ah Mu made a deep sound as if trying to say something. Although Veronia and Agunas weren’t paying attention and thus couldn’t translate, Qi Chen, who had been with Ah Mu for a long time, understood without needing translation and smiled, saying,
"Thank you..."
Xiao Ji flicked its tail feathers, strangely looking at Veronia and Agunas, not quite understanding what was wrong with them. Since it was born recently, many things were unclear to it. Feng Yuan smiled, touched Xiao Ji’s head, and said,
"Don’t mind them, you don’t need to understand these things now."
Confused, Xiao Ji looked at Feng Yuan, still somewhat puzzled, but soon Feng Yuan kept smoothing its feathers, prompting it to let go of the matter. Yun You whispered to Flower Leaf Child, who nodded, seemingly agreeing with her words.
Little Green Snake looked enigmatically at everything. Although it had quietly followed them all this time, it didn’t mean it understood nothing. It had clearly seen the recent events and glanced at Big Cat, who despite pretending to be unaffected, was clearly putting on a brave face.
Though Big Cat was quite astute, it had earlier tricked it into revealing its past and why it had chosen this particular path.
