Chapter 140: Chapter 140 Spoiling~

An Ge’s foot injury still hadn’t healed, and standing for too long left her in pain. After distancing herself from Huo Shaoyan, she finally noticed Jiang Fengmian following behind him. Once she invited them inside, she poured water for each of them.

Sitting on the sofa, she answered Huo Shaoyan’s question, "It’s nothing serious. I get high fevers every winter, and usually, after some rest, they go away."

Huo Shaoyan loosened two buttons at his collar, and after the agitation in his chest subsided somewhat, he spoke. However, he addressed Jiang Fengmian, "I brought you here not to worship you as an ancestor, so hurry up and check on her."

Jiang Fengmian opened the medical kit he had brought and took out a stethoscope to examine An Ge. After a few minutes, he concluded, "It’s just a common viral cold, nothing deadly."

An Ge thanked him and then asked, "Should I take any medication for this?"

Jiang Fengmian replied, "It’s best not to. If the fever hasn’t subsided by tomorrow, we can discuss it then."

An Ge acknowledged with a nod and then, as Jiang Fengmian was about to leave, asked, "Could I ask you another question?"

Jiang Fengmian, a renowned surgeon, was already irked at being dragged out in the middle of the night to treat a common viral infection for a scandal-ridden woman, so he couldn’t be friendly. He responded curtly, "Speak."

An Ge asked, "Can ashes be used for DNA paternity testing?"

Jiang Fengmian answered, "Ms. An, if you graduated from elementary school, you wouldn’t be asking such a foolish question."

An Ge: "..."

Jiang Fengmian continued, "Though I don’t know what kind of spell Huo Shaoyan was under when he married you, I still have to say, you’re not good enough for him." He paused, speaking with a hint of warning, "Also, don’t mess with Jiang Qingyi. If she gets hurt because of you, I don’t care whose woman you are, I won’t stand for it." With that, Jiang Fengmian left.

Afterward, Huo Shaoyan asked An Ge, "Why did you suddenly want to ask that kind of question?" He was referring to An Ge asking Jiang Fengmian if ashes could be used for DNA testing. Until she figured out the situation, An Ge thought it was better to avoid complications. So, she casually said, "Nothing, just thought of it and asked."

Huo Shaoyan said, "Qin Lang mentioned that a jar of ashes wrapped in red silk was found when they excavated your grandmother’s grave. Do you think these ashes could belong to someone significant?"

An Ge shook her head, "I don’t remember much from the past, but my mom’s dying words mentioned this as a relic meant for me to keep safe."

Huo Shaoyan asked, "Where is it?"

Two minutes later, An Ge presented the item to Huo Shaoyan. The red silk fabric wrapping the jar of ashes was quite ordinary, and the jar itself was of post-modern manufacture, showing nothing unusual.

However, since it involved the whereabouts of Qin Huaisheng, Huo Shaoyan didn’t want to miss any clue. So, he said, "Based on the current investigation, the ashes inside might belong to the person we’ve been searching for. So, I’ll keep it for now. Do you mind?"

Ever since An Ge had the thought that she might not be the biological daughter of An Zhiguo and Wen Ning, she’d been eager to uncover the truth. So, she had no objections to Huo Shaoyan’s arrangement. An additional investigation was better than her going solo. Thinking of this, she said, "Sure, you hold a high position and have a dignified status, you’re more capable of taking care of it than I am."

After saying this, she put away the jar of ashes and walked over to him, asking, "Are you staying over tonight?"

Huo Shaoyan countered, "Do you want me to stay?"

While speaking, he stood up from the sofa. He was tall, with a natural sense of imposing pressure, and combined with his cold bone structure, his entire aura made people recoil.

An Ge instinctively felt that if she drove him away, he would definitely be angry. She didn’t want him to be angry because whenever he was, she was the one who ended up miserable.

An Ge took a step closer to him and leaned her head against his chest, her voice soft and tender from the high fever, "Hmm, sort of want."

Her gentleness and warmth instantly smoothed over all of Huo Shaoyan’s frustration and irritation. He picked her up in his arms, "So well-behaved?"

An Ge wrapped her arms around his neck, her large, clear eyes looking at him, "I learned my lesson from not being well-behaved before."

Huo Shaoyan, in good spirits, not only carried her back to bed but also took the initiative to bring up the topic of replacing the wedding ring, "When I’ve got some free time, I’ll take you to pick out a wedding ring."

An Ge’s heart fluttered slightly, her pretty eyelashes quivered. She wanted to say they’d still part ways in the future, making the ring unnecessary. Only women who marry out of love wear wedding rings with any significance. Otherwise, it only feels like a shackle choking the soul, causing unbearable pain.

But she wisely swallowed back the words that were about to spill, "Okay."

An Ge, exhausted from the high fever, nestled into the man’s embrace and soon drifted into a fuzzy sleep. Her slumber was light because she was aware when the man got up to take a phone call.

The balcony door wasn’t shut tightly, and bits of the man’s voice filtered through, "I’m not a doctor; if you’re feeling unwell, go to the hospital."

"But the doctor said there are symptoms of a threatened miscarriage, your grandmother has gone to the hospital, yet you’re here enjoying yourself with some enchantress—how can you justify that?"

The voice speaking was Fu Rou’s.

The outdoor temperature was frigid, and the wind swept through, making everything icy cold.

But Huo Shaoyan didn’t fear the chill; he only felt the wind had opened up his pores, leaving him exceptionally clear-headed.

After a pause, he replied, "Alright, I’ll be there shortly."

Ending the call, he approached An Ge’s bedside, "Are you asleep? I need to step out for a while."

An Ge opened her eyes, her eyes fiery red due to the fever. She guessed who he was going to meet. She knew she had no reason to stop him but couldn’t help voicing the bitter strain, "Leaving your wife on our wedding night to see an ex?"

"Jealous?"

An Ge thought for a moment, saying, "Not exactly jealous, but since it’s An Baoying, I’m definitely not happy about you leaving me to see her."

Yet, the man didn’t stay back because of it. Picking up his coat while slipping it on, he said, "Mrs. Huo, you’re overstepping; it won’t make me happy. Get some rest. I’ll check in on you when I have time."

An Ge responded softly, "Sorry, I overstepped."

Having said that, she went to the master bedroom, retrieved a small wooden black box, and handed it to him, "A new wedding gift for you."

Huo Shaoyan felt a stir in his chest, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly, "What’s this?"

Opening the box, An Ge took out a string of Buddha Beads and placed the wooden box on the tea table. The bracelet was familiar to Huo Shaoyan.

Oh, he remembered. On his birthday party night at the Huangchao Night Club, she had come to give him this. Back then, upset at her hanging out with Tang Jiuze, he had broken the bracelet on the spot. He hadn’t expected her to gather the beads back up and restring them.

Recalling how she put thought into gifts for others while being so dismissive toward him, his annoyance flared up to his throat. It took all his control to suppress his anger, and he said coldly, "You brought back something I’d thrown away and used it to brush me off; that’s too much!"
