Chapter 310: 310. Sneak Attack

Of course, even if we’re detected, we’re not afraid. The men of Hua Village are not cowards.

Following the leader, they climbed all the way up. Just as they were about to reach the enemies’ stronghold, Hua Jing reminded Hua Lao Han to stop.

They couldn’t advance so openly anymore; a sneak attack had to be done quietly.

Under Hua Lao Han’s watchful eyes, everyone gathered together to discuss for a moment, formulated a strategy, and then under the leadership of Hua Qiang and Hua Rong, they split into two groups for a surprise assault.

Hua Rong was responsible for dealing with the sentries, while Hua Qiang was tasked with taking care of the people inside the cave.

In the darkness, shadows moved, accompanied only by a few muffled groans that weren’t loud enough to alert anyone. The ones outside the cave were dealt with first, followed by those inside. Although it took a bit longer than the ones outside, it wasn’t by much. Most were knocked out by Hua Qiang and his team while still in their sleep.

Even though Hua Jin’er didn’t participate, he saw everything clearly. Except for a few who reacted quickly and struggled a bit, the rest were handled effortlessly, most with a single blow, either being knocked out or having their throats slit.

As Jin’er relaxed, so did Hua Lao Han.

As he expected, the next moment, Hua Qiang and the others arrived.

"Village chief, uncle, all taken care of," Hua Qiang and his excited group said, eyes shining as they looked at the elderly village chief.

Though he had anticipated it, Hua Lao Han was still very pleased to hear the news and nodded.

"Good, when we return, everyone will be credited and rewarded."

"Really?" Hua exclaimed in surprise, but fortunately remembered to keep his voice down, or he might have faced the stick in Hua Lao Han’s hand.

It was indeed an unexpected joy, not anticipating a reward.

"Of course, do you think your village chief is stingy? You fought bravely against the villains and saved so much for Hua Village, contributing greatly. You will naturally be rewarded. But that will be discussed when we return. For now, let’s deal with these beasts wrapped in human skin."

Killing intent flashed in Hua Lao Han’s eyes.

In necessary times, necessary measures are needed. A soft-hearted woman will only cause more harm to others. As a village chief for so many years, Hua Lao Han understood this truth better than anyone and was never a soft-hearted person.

If that were the case, he wouldn’t have led the entire Hua Village to survive without losing a single person during the drought decades ago.

He had taken lives before, but it was always out of necessity, forced by fate.

"Of course not. Our village chief is the most generous. Rest assured, village chief, these people will be well taken care of." Lai Yansan glanced at the dozen or so kneeling on the ground as he spoke.

Although they didn’t yet know what the reward would be, their excitement had already filled them with motivation, and they were very much looking forward to it.

As soon as the words were spoken, the group of men quickly disappeared again. When they reappeared, they brought before Hua Lao Han about a dozen people tied up like braided ropes.

Looking at the dozen or so people bound using whatever materials were at hand, Hua Jin’er resisted smiling and tried hard not to laugh.

He never realized that the uncles and brothers in the village were so talented, freely and thoroughly mastering all the difficult poses from yoga without being taught, using anything that could tie a person up, like belts, cloth strips, clothes, and bed sheets.

At that moment, they were all unconscious, or the twisted postures would have knocked them out with pain.

Xiaoxiao looked at the uncles and brothers with admiration. The young boy could not believe people could be tied up this way, gaining much new knowledge.

While observing, he took the opportunity to vent his anger a little, kicking each person a few times.

Hua Lao Han merely glanced over them and couldn’t be bothered to look at them further—such scum wouldn’t dirty his eyes any longer.

"Leave a few men on guard. The rest, make quick work of it." Hua Lao Han commanded.

What remained of the stronghold were the old, weak, women, and children, more than manageable for the group led by Hua Qiang.

"Got it!!"

The men then brandished their weapons and again disappeared into the night.

Soon after, a series of frantic, panicked cries and pleas for mercy emerged from a distance but quickly fell silent.

It would be strange if they could make a sound with their mouths blocked. There was no denying that the village uncles and brothers did an excellent job.

These eerie cries also awakened the men and women, old and young, sleeping in the tents, who realized in their horror that... something had happened.

Among them, the few men at the outermost side, beaten beyond recognition, painfully sat up despite being bound hand and foot, as a light of hope shone in their eyes.

The more chaotic, the better. Perhaps in the chaos there would be a chance to escape. Slowly, inch by inch, they moved toward the edge of the tent, trying to peer through the cracks to assess the situation outside.

Unfortunately, aside from the large torches and shadowy silhouettes, nothing more could be discerned.

Someone had indeed come, and it seemed to be people not on friendly terms with Lai Yansan; the owners of the eyes peering through the cracks were filled with a hopeful glow.

"Hui Zi, help me cut the rope on my hands." The speaker handed a sharp stone shard that had always been hidden in his hand to the youth next to him named Hui Zi.

This stone shard was the result of several days of stealthy grinding, waiting for a day when there was a chance to escape.

However, this group found joy in beating them, layering new injuries on old every day, adding to the single meager meal of clear wild vegetable soup that barely kept them alive. They were too weak and had long sought an opportunity to run away.

Despite this, the desire to live never left him, and now, the opportunity had finally come.

His words undoubtedly brought hope to everyone in the tent. Those who were awake almost unanimously turned to look at the young man named Hui Zi, urging him with their eyes to hurry up.

In fact, Hui Zi was already struggling his way toward Li Lao San, tragically slowed down by the weakness of an empty stomach. What should have been a simple task ended up consuming considerable effort before he drew near.

Hui Zi almost couldn’t help but cry, thinking how hard it was to want to live!

Taking the stone shard knife from Li Lao San, "Brother Li, bear with it a bit!"

He took a deep breath and began to cut.

Unable to see, he had to rely on instinct to saw through the rope. If care wasn’t taken, he’d brush against Li Lao San’s hands. Yet at that moment, Li Lao San, whose focus was entirely on escaping, had completely ignored the pain in his hands, cooperating by allowing Hui Zi to cut away.

Until he felt the rope on his hands loosen, excitement flickered in his eyes. With force, he broke free from his bound hands, then untied the ropes on his legs, and tried to get up right away, yet fell to the ground in the next moment, taking a while to feel the sensation return to his legs.

Once up, the first thing he did was untie those beside him, followed by the others.

This scene did not escape Hua Jin’er’s gaze. This Brother Li... seemed somewhat familiar. Hua Jin’er took a closer look.

On the other side, figures moved swiftly in the darkness, as a group of bound old, weak, women, and children appeared before Hua Lao Han, each with a gagged mouth, not even sparing the children.

Some of them, still resistant, the older women and men, tried to use their last bit of strength to struggle and curse, but when they saw one of their own among the twisted, bound forms in the torchlight, their struggling ceased, leaving only terror.

All their people had been captured, and they, the old, weak, women, and children, were surely no match for these people?
