Disaster Apocalypse: Farming, Family, and My Hidden Secret Space -
Chapter 158. What if?
Chapter 158: 158. What if?
Desperately thinking it would be great if her space could be a bit larger, but unfortunately, she also knew that having such a space was already defying the odds, unless she was Heaven’s own daughter.
But what if, just in case, maybe she could try, didn’t the novels say...
Thinking of this, Hua Jin slapped herself, quickly returned to her room, opened the wardrobe, and pushed aside the clothes. Inside, there was a combination safe.
If it weren’t for the sudden sense of crisis, she would have completely forgotten about the safe at home.
She opened it and took out a rosewood box, gently stroking the patterns on it, with a hint of sadness flashing in Hua Jin’s eyes.
The box was locked with an antique little lock. Taking the key from the safe, the sad-looking Hua Jin opened the wooden box.
Upon opening it, the first thing she saw was the property deed for which she almost exhausted her family fortune. The novelty had long passed, so she just gave it a glance before placing it aside, then her eyes reddened as she trembled and took out another red book inside. "Household Register," those three words made Hua Jin’s eyes turn blurry.
Sniffing her nose, she opened the household register and saw the page with the word "Cancelled" written on it. Hua Jin, who thought she was long prepared to bear it, couldn’t hold back her tears, gently touching the names of her father and mother.
During countless difficult days, it was relying on the household register and the family’s photo album that she made it through those tough times.
The fast-paced life of the working years left her no time to daydream, so these most precious memories were put away in the safe.
Holding the household register tightly to her chest, she paused for a moment, wiped a tear, and placed the register to the side. Next was the equally important photo album. It had been a long time since she opened it. With trembling hands, she opened the album, and as she looked at the beautiful memories of her childhood, the just-stopped tears broke free once again.
"Dad, Mom, I’m doing well now. You can finally rest easy, right?" Hua Jin murmured with blurred eyes.
Calming herself, she placed several photo albums from the wooden box onto the bed one by one, revealing a jewelry box underneath.
Inside were all of her mother’s jewels. Ever since her mother passed away and put them in the wooden box, Hua Jin avoided opening it again to spare herself the heartache.
If it weren’t for wanting to verify her thoughts, she wouldn’t dare touch her mother’s belongings out of necessity.
Inside were not only her mother’s but also items her parents had been saving for her since she was born, saying that when she grew up and got married, these would be her dowry.
All of it was her parents’ love for her. Hua Jin opened several layers of the jewelry box in one go.
She remembered there was a time when her mother was particularly obsessed with jade, and on every anniversary, her father would gift her some.
If it weren’t for that accident, their family would have been a very happy one, with her parents running their respective shops, living a fulfilling and prosperous life.
Looking at the gold jewelry in the box, Hua Jin calmed her mind.
The top three drawers were her mother’s own; the bottom two contained the dowry her mother saved for her every year.
But... Hua Jin was indeed stunned.
Not a single drawer contained anything but gold and silver. The jade bangles, jade pendants, rings, and bracelets had all vanished, leaving only several red and black threads indicating their previous existence.
...It’s really gone. If it wasn’t the space itself devouring it, how else could it be explained?
Even if it were theft, a thief wouldn’t steal only the real jade and leave behind boxes of gold and silver jewelry.
Therefore... there’s only one explanation.
Thinking of this, Hua Jin became excited, suddenly feeling as if she might really be Heaven’s daughter.
Will it work? Trying will tell.
Luckily, the day after tomorrow, she has to go to the town to deliver art paper, and she can visit the jewelry shop there and buy a few similar jade stones.
That means she’ll have to work overtime tomorrow and draw a few more pieces. After washing up, as she lay in bed, her drowsy mind couldn’t help but think.
...
Hua Jin opened her eyes drenched in sweat, taking several deep breaths to wake up upon seeing the familiar environment.
Another dream, just like the one she had in the car that day, and even more detailed.
In the dream, Heaven seemed intent on punishing mankind, as one disaster followed after another, beginning with a rainstorm at the start of autumn. Just as the flood disaster was finally over and people began to breathe a sigh of relief, a business came one after another, then extreme cold arrived, skipping over autumn entirely, giving only a transition of ten days, with temperatures rapidly dropping to as low as minus sixty to seventy degrees. Within a year, countless people froze to death.
After the extreme cold, people had less than half a year’s time to recover, and just as everyone thought the disasters were finally over, an unprecedented drought suddenly occurred, bringing nearly a year of extreme heat.
Over the years, one disaster after another arrived; the royal court was too preoccupied to care, and the already scarce societal order vanished entirely. Local leaders declared themselves kings everywhere.
There were countless who died of thirst, hunger, or were killed. Corpses were a common sight everywhere.
Human life became incredibly cheap, where someone wouldn’t blink an eye to kill for a sip of water, or sell a wife and daughter for a handful of rice. Even to simply survive, some people became hardly human anymore.
An extreme heat claimed countless lives, it also took away the last hope, and with it the already limited human sanity.
But the following earthquake thinned the surviving people once more, then long-missed rains finally appeared, followed by hail. Everywhere Hua Jin’s eyes could see was utterly desolate and barren, and then Hua Jin woke up.
Feeling the sticky sweat on her body, Hua Jin went straight into the bathroom, letting the shower fall on her as she closed her eyes, the scenes from her dream replaying in her mind over and over.
Could it be that what she thought about by day came to haunt her by night, causing her to dream that same dream again?
The disaster sequence was exactly the same. Could such coincidences really happen?
It was so real, real enough for her to feel it personally.
The sense of urgency in Hua Jin’s heart rose again. After her shower, Hua Jin came out of her space.
The sky was slightly bright, and immediately upon exiting the space she felt a distinct heat. Frowning slightly, Hua Jin headed straight to the backyard where her father and grandfather were tending to the vegetable plot.
This was the right time to find them in the backyard. If she didn’t, they would have gone to the fields.
"Dad, Grandpa..." Hua Jin jogged to her father, who was watering the vegetables, while Grandpa Hua was on the other side of the vegetable plot. Hearing his granddaughter’s call, he stopped what he was doing, his face unconsciously breaking into a smile.
"Jin’er, why are you up so early?" Grandpa Hua walked towards his granddaughter.
"Yeah, why not sleep a little longer? It’s still early," Hua Chengtian smiled at his daughter, curious about her serious expression, wondering if it was Little Four who had stirred up trouble with his sister again?
"I’m not sleepy anymore. Dad, Grandpa, I have something to tell you." Hua Jin said seriously, with a stern little face, earnestly looking at Hua Chengtian and Grandpa Hua.
After thinking through the dream, she felt she still had to tell her dad and grandpa. Better if it doesn’t happen, but if it does, it gives them time to prepare.
Especially since Grandpa is the village head, with most of the villagers being relatives. According to the dream, there was still a year left until the disasters struck, which should be enough time for everyone to prepare.
