Chapter 60: Seed of Calamity

The lion was ready to grow.

Shaking its fur, the spirit beast’s entire body pulsed in rhythm.

Even the qi flow started to respond to its breathing, shimmering faintly before increasing its heart rate.

One by one, other beasts also started to change.

The huge winged falcon screeched as its feathers started shifting colors. Its soft shell now glowed in a metallic shade.

The fish-like creature and vine serpent also grew in size, their old injuries vanishing, replaced by new scales.

It was a re-awakening, allowing spirit beasts to rediscover their strength without forced rituals.

Noa watched the scene with a satisfied smile.

While others blinked in confusion and never-ending chaos, he remained calm.

To his surprise, the temporary system flooded him with quite persistent notifications, refusing to let him close them.

{Goldenfur Lion: Awakened blooming iron trait}

{Silverwing Falcon: Potential increased D- → D+}

{Nemo the Fish: Awakened defensive trait}

{Thick Vein Serphant: Potential increased C+ → B}

"They are evolving!" Elder Jin said, his eyes glued on his fish as it went through a visible change in its power.

Others noticed as well.

If the previous chaos was loud, this one silenced the world.

The only sounds that remained in the chamber were the noises the spirit beasts made upon maturing.

As for Yun Qiqi, her vision flickered from one animal to another.

"They are just... growing," she whispered, her face showing signs of excitement. "Not with pain. But with comfort."

Noa watched her as well, a hidden grin appearing on his face.

But—

The system showed him one more message, causing his heart to drop to the ground.

{The Seed of Calamity: Maturity F → E}

’Shit,’ Noa said inwardly and advanced in her direction. ’Her curse is evolving as well.’

Yun Qiqi noticed his approach.

"Big Brother?" she asked, seeing his troubled expression.

"You need to leave this place. Now!" Noa whispered, taking her hand with force.

He guided the girl out of the chamber.

His steps, voice, and face—everything looked out of place, allowing Qiqi to guess that something was wrong.

Even though she wanted to stay, she lowered her head.

Yun Qiqi didn’t ask any questions.

She trusted her big brother more than anyone and followed his lead.

Only after fleeing the room and leaving the sect members inside did Noa sigh in relief. "Please," he pleaded, his voice softer than usual. "Please don’t go into that room anymore. I am sorry for not realizing it sooner, but it’s dangerous for you."

Qiqi looked up at him with wide eyes.

"Dangerous? But they won’t harm me. I think the beasts like me," she answered, trying to explain.

Noa shook his head.

"I am not talking about the beasts. The chamber itself is a threat to you. So, don’t ever go in there without me."

The girl nodded, swallowing hard.

There was still much she couldn’t understand, but seeing Noa’s tense complexion, she didn’t want to worry him any further.

"Okay," she said, placing a hand over her chest as if sealing it with a promise.

Noa couldn’t help but smile at her.

"Thanks," he said, squishing her cheeks stronger than ever before.

"You might be the more dangerous for my cheeks," Qiqi pouted, trying to reach Noa’s forehead to flick it.

But with her tiny frame, she wasn’t even close.

Noa chuckled at her futile move and told her to stay put before he came back.

She, however, stuck her tongue out, trying to annoy him.

Ignoring her another useless attempt to get back at him, Noa moved toward the door, planning to see what his sect members were up to.

Yet his thought process was controlled by something.

Qiqi’s seed grew stronger.

It evolved into something more dangerous, increasing the chance of it blooming sooner than before.

In no world was it good news.

’I have to be more careful,’ he considered, aiming to learn more about the seed.

There was one more thing.

The beasts acted friendly around her, as if they truly enjoyed her company.

It had to be connected with the seed.

No other reasoning could explain it, as even the egg listened to her, stopping its constant hunger for mana and qi.

He sighed and stepped back inside the chamber.

Of course, everyone noticed his absence.

Only the mindless beasts paid no attention, unlike the people who stood frozen, waiting for his return.

They didn’t ask why he left.

Neither Noa offered them an explanation.

He was, or at least pretended to be, someone who only acted according to his whims.

So, there was no need for him to say something.

"Is it done?" he asked casually, looking at Wei Rou and pointing to him to stand before him.

The dignified elder who once ruled the Blooming Iron Sect bowed first and then gladly appeared in front of him.

"We are done here," he said, his head hanging low.

Noa nodded.

The binding room worked only once per beast, and the effects varied.

With higher-ranking spirit animals, the results were much better, allowing them to grow even stronger.

But it didn’t mean the weak were left with nothing.

They also gained some kind of power one way or another, and that was enough to satisfy Noa’s guests.

The room had calmed down.

Noa stood at the centre of it.

This man had built a place where even the weak cultivators could rise again.

At that moment, even those who hadn’t fully trusted his abilities and had doubted the idea of joining him found themselves thinking the same thing.

It wasn’t about whether Noa was worthy of their loyalty.

No.

It was about whether they deserved to walk under his shadow.

"Good," Noa said suddenly. "But we are done for today. Everyone can wait outside the store for Chen Hao."

Silence settled over after his words.

But before they all left the chamber, Noa stopped Wei Rou, his lips curling into a mischievous grin.

"Yes?" the man asked politely.

Noa, however, ignored his question and made his way towards the contract room, planning to secure a cheap laborer.
