Chapter 401: Chapter 401: Dual-Line Investigation

In the endless wilderness shrouded by the gray sky, the curtain of rain descended from above, with indistinct information hidden within—

This rain originated from "Shuji," it fell from the real world, crossed the border between life and death, and sprinkled this illusion before Yu Sheng in the Soul Wilderness.

But... why?

Yu Sheng watched the "raindrops" constantly appearing and quickly dissipating in his hands, frowning slightly: "Are you saying this rain appeared suddenly after my ’death’?"

"Yes," Luna nodded, "the knights and I just patrolled the wilderness and found the rain’s range isn’t actually large, only covering the path from here to the Guardian Fire Cathedral—but curiously, as long as you’re in its coverage, there’s an illusion of endless rain."

"...It’s not an illusion; it’s a sensation projection from the real world, because in Shuji, this eternal rainy season does indeed cover the entire equator," Yu Sheng exhaled lightly, suppressing a heap of chaotic yet illogical guesses in his heart while speaking, "Besides this rain, is there any other change in the wilderness? Does it affect other regions?"

"No," Luna shook her head, "we checked around, and it’s all ’calm’ outside, as usual."

"Then let’s not worry about it for now," Yu Sheng said, "If its range suddenly expands or if there are any other changes, report to me."

Luna nodded but then hesitated, "...Do you mean it’s harmless here?"

"Harmless," Yu Sheng said while sensing the range and impact of this "illusionary rain" through his connection with the wilderness, "but as for how exactly this rain ’projected’ here, I still need to investigate; there’s no rush in this matter."

"Okay, I understand, I’ll follow your instructions,"

Yu Sheng nodded slightly, then relaxed his mind and took a step back—the next second, he "fell" into the world of the living.

The instant weightlessness and sensory disorientation hit him like a tide, and then receded like one. After that familiar sensation faded, he opened his eyes to see himself walking in the rain curtain of Shuji in the real world.

He passed through this rain curtain, seeing the abandoned factory building standing at the edge of his vision, and Luna, dressed as a nun, waving at him from the corner of the factory’s side wall.

Yu Sheng smiled and walked quickly over, immediately seeing the Jade-faced Golden Fox waking up gently amidst the crowd and the busy Hu Li and his nephew among others.

Then he saw two little puppets bouncing up and down behind the crowd.

One looked filthy as if it had just crawled out of a mud pit; the other was even more outrageous, sparking with electricity and bouncing like an RGB-spirit, with everyone trying to keep their distance from her. Hu Li even dropped his three tails to the ground as grounded lines, acting on high alert every time Erin approached...

Although Luna had mentioned it in the Soul Wilderness before, Yu Sheng was still startled seeing Erin’s current state with his own eyes. And while he was in a daze, the little puppets inside the factory noticed the figure at the door, and the two midgets joyfully ran over, shouting as they ran: "Hey, Yu Sheng is back! Yu Sheng is back!"

One puppet, like a mud ball, and the other sparking with electricity, rushed straight toward Yu Sheng. Seeing this, his blood ran cold on the spot, not knowing which one to dodge first—in those two seconds of hesitation, they both jumped on him. The mud ball only smudged a mark on his chest, but the sparking one clapped directly onto his face...

In that instant, Yu Sheng almost felt like he was back in that post-mortem chaos, almost not living five minutes in this life...

"Don’t mess with the new stuff!" Yu Sheng’s vision went black for two or three seconds before he struggled to pry Erin (pika) off his head from the thunderbolt impact. But he couldn’t bring himself to toss her aside (mainly seeing her happily pouncing, it felt heartless to throw her), so he cautiously held her by the scruff to keep her away from his head, "From now on, until the surplus energy in your body is vented, don’t jump on me!"

Erin seemed to not hear what Yu Sheng was saying at all, still bubbling with excitement in mid-air: "Hey, I’m telling you, I was amazing just now! I unleashed a light cannon..."

"I already know the general situation—heard from Luna before," Yu Sheng said, knowing if he let this little thing start talking, she could chirp for half an hour nonstop, so he interrupted her right away, "No doubt you had the highest output this time, I’ll buy you the monthly event skin when we get back."

Erin’s eyes lit up (literally, with sparks too): "Awesome!!"

After carefully putting the two puppets down, Yu Sheng quickly walked over to Master Yuan Hao.

Master Yuan Hao was momentarily lost in thought. In that very brief instant, he vaguely felt something amiss, but the next second he seemed to forget this sense of discord in his heart, merely feeling that Yu Sheng had never really been far away, only stepping out of his sight for a moment.

"The wounded can be moved now, right?" Yu Sheng looked down at the Tibetan Fox on the ground, breathing steadily as if just in deep sleep, "I will open the door and send him to Qianfeng Ling Mountain."

The last bit of doubt in Master Yuan Hao’s mind about Yu Sheng’s brief departure and sudden reappearance vanished entirely. Hearing this, he immediately nodded: "The movement is no longer an issue. I have already contacted my junior brother and prepared everything on his side. You can open the door directly in front of Queyun Palace’s main hall."

At this moment, Yu Sheng already stretched his hand into the air. After confirming the size of the Tibetan Fox once more, he took a light breath, and a door many times wider than usual gradually opened in his hand.

On the other side of the door was the familiar scenery of Qianfeng Ling Mountain, with Yuanling and Yuan He personally leading a team.

...It looked just like a medical path and vet master consulting jointly, perfectly matching the wounded’s situation.

Master Yuan Hao raised his hand, and the still slumbering Tibetan Fox was sent over through the door.

Then Yu Sheng turned around again, and saw the golden fox Linglong standing not far away, staring with wide eyes.

This local fox stared dumbfoundedly at the door Yu Sheng opened, as if the aftereffects of being stunned by Erin hadn’t worn off yet. At this moment, her eyes were still a little dazed, but there was clearly a hint of nervousness and worry in those wide-open eyes, evidently afraid something had happened to her kin.

"You should go over too," Yu Sheng gestured to the golden fox girl upon seeing this, "You happen to have some injuries yourself, let True Man Yuan He take a look at them for you as well."

"Ah... alright!" Linglong hesitated before nodding quickly, then hesitantly moving to the door, but still peeking and not daring to step in directly. Clearly, she had never seen such ’Immortal Law’, making her extremely nervous for a while.

But Erin (pika) had no patience. Seeing Linglong hesitating, the little puppet ran over and poked one of Linglong’s tails with a finger: "Shhh—!"

Sparks flew everywhere.

Linglong yelped an "Ow" and leaped to Qianfeng Ling Mountain.

Yu Sheng then casually closed the door.

"Alright, let them recuperate at Qianfeng Ling Mountain first," Yu Sheng clapped his hands, "Let’s check this place again before we leave, to see if we missed any clues—then let’s see if Xuan Che has made any progress."

...

The rain has lightened, drizzling as if on the brink of stopping, yet it never truly ceased, merely fluctuating in intensity, sketching an elusive, seemingly real yet illusionary landscape outside the window.

The sky remained as gloomy and dark as ever, even at the lightest rainfall, with heavy clouds draping over the city like a night curtain. Even when weak sunlight pierced through at times, casting patches of dubious "light" on the bases of clouds and some nearby high-rises, that sunlight seemed to be a false illusion in the night, disappearing in an instant.

A woman with an extraordinary aura and radiant appearance stood silently before the window, gazing at the perpetually rainy Mo City outside.

The woman wore a long black dress with golden patterns, her long, dark hair almost reaching her ankles. The hem of the dress was embroidered with ink cloud patterns like vortices, an exquisite craftsmanship, and those patterns were precisely the insignia of the distinguished Shuji Mo Family.

She was the City Lord of Mo City, Mo Ran.

"It’s always like this here, the rain seems never-ending, only occasionally lightening, four hundred days of rain season in a year, the remaining sixty days aren’t much clearer. After the rain stops, you can only sporadically glimpse the sunlight through the clouds—so to many outsiders, this is really not a good place for recovery," Mo Ran turned around to look at her guest in the room, "So if you’re not comfortable staying in the city, I can arrange a different place for you—at the top of No. 7 Refining Tower, the Mo Family has built a Cloud Villa, which, though not vast, has at least some sunlight."

"Thank you for your kindness, City Lord, but I’m accustomed to appreciating all sorts of scenery while traveling for my master. This ’rain season’ of Mo City is a rather novel experience for me," Xuan Che sat not far from the window, a slight smile on his face, "And the City Lord need not trouble to make other arrangements, I merely came this time on master’s orders to conduct some private investigations under special circumstances, without wanting to alarm everyone, hoping for understanding."

"Mo Ran understands," Mo Ran faced Xuan Che, bowing slightly in respect, "The Shuji Mo Family has benefitted from the protection of Qianfeng Ling Mountain, creating this foundation. Now the master has issued orders, and the Mo Family will fully cooperate."
