Dig Up the Sun Emperor's Legacy: I Build an Invincible Undead Legion -
Chapter 149: Phase One Begins
Chapter 149: Phase One Begins
Seeing that Red Spirit had the operation down pat, Carlos flew in the opposite direction and started spreading salt.
Wherever the two of them flew, massive amounts of salt sand rained down from the sky, like a sandstorm shower.
The salt sand hit the military tents with steady pitter-patter sounds.
"?"
Inside the black sand military tents, some black sand soldiers got jolted awake.
They all shuffled out of their tents.
Looking around, they found nothing out of the ordinary—the sun was still beating down mercilessly.
After poking around with no luck, they headed back to their tents.
However, they didn’t notice that some nearly invisible strange sand had appeared on the ground...
...
"Wah!"
Red Spirit happily waved its empty bag, showing it had nailed the mission perfectly!
Carlos smoothly took the bag and tucked it away.
Just as he was about to move to the next step, he saw Red Spirit quietly floating in front of him, its red pupils looking at him with puppy-dog eyes.
Carlos immediately caught on and cleared his throat:
"Ahem, Red Spirit retainer, you knocked this mission out of the park!
Great job!"
"Wah heh heh!"
Red Spirit bashfully touched its skull,
It wasn’t that big a deal!
And besides... it wasn’t hard work at all... as long as master gave it props!
After giving Red Spirit its well-deserved praise, Carlos immediately flew to the narrow paths near the black sand military camp area.
One path after another, eight skinny roads total, some so narrow only one person could squeeze through.
These weren’t really roads to start with, just downhill trails carved out by wind and sand.
On each little path, Carlos stationed two Shield Guards,
"From here on out, don’t let a single creature slip through these roads!"
"Creak!"
The Shield Guards responded,
Their soul flames burned bright—they absolutely wouldn’t let one creature pass!
Wielding great swords and massive shields, one left and one right, they completely choked off the small paths.
"Perfect!"
With the Shield Guards holding the line, Carlos felt rock solid.
Hearing master think so highly of the crew below, Red Spirit couldn’t sit still and sidled up to Carlos’s ear, throwing its hat in the ring:
"Wah!"
I want to stand guard too!
Carlos flicked Red Spirit’s skull,
"Let them handle guard duty.
Next up, you’ve got a way more important job!"
"Wah!"
Master’s words carried deep trust and recognition, making Red Spirit over the moon.
Oh right, that purple blockhead wasn’t around—this was double the fun!
...
After bottling up the roads, Carlos flew to the edge of the black sand military area.
He waved his hand with a flourish,
The remaining 12 Shield Guards and Purple Vortex appeared.
"Roar~"
Purple Vortex sidled up to master’s side and let out a wounded low roar,
Didn’t you say you wouldn’t stick me back in the summoning space?
Why was I the only one who got the boot again?
Carlos patted Purple Vortex’s shoulder and set the record straight:
"This situation was special—the dark mist boss node is up on the mountain,
Flying is the slickest and sneakiest way to get there.
I couldn’t have Red Spirit and me fly up here and leave you all alone to hoof it up the mountain, right?"
After hearing this, Purple Vortex shook its head like a bobblehead.
Compared to that awful scenario, getting stuffed back in master’s summoning space was actually not half bad.
At this point, Red Spirit was floating in mid-air, buzzing with excitement and rubbernecking eagerly, looking ready to strut its stuff.
Purple Vortex looked up with green-eyed envy,
For the first time ever, it had such a burning desire for flight.
It secretly made a promise to itself—next time... next time it would definitely snag a pair of wings!
After smoothing Purple Vortex’s ruffled feathers, Carlos clapped his hands and officially started handing out assignments.
"This operation breaks down into three phases.
Phase one:
First, Purple Vortex will lead six Purple Thornblade Shield Guards in a head-on assault against the black sand army’s vanguard.
Then, Red Spirit will lead six Redrose Shield Guards at full throttle to circle around to the rear of the black sand army’s vanguard and cut off their escape route from behind.
This way, with attacks from front and rear, the black sand army’s vanguard definitely won’t be able to cover both ends, and will be running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
With you butchering them from front and back, they can only run in other directions.
Those small paths have Shield Guards I’ve already positioned standing rock-solid guard.
In the end, you’ll wipe them out completely!
Got it?"
"Roar!"
"Wah!"
Purple Vortex and Red Spirit snapped to attention and bellowed their response!
"Outstanding! Move out!
Remember, you must lead the Shield Guards into action—don’t go it alone!"
Carlos wanted to sharpen the two retainers’ leadership chops.
Once their commanding skills got better, Carlos could just give big-picture orders and leave all the nitty-gritty execution to them.
This would take a huge load off Carlos’s shoulders.
Not using the airdrop Shield Guards trick this time was also part of training their leadership abilities.
After getting master’s marching orders, the two retainers immediately took off with their Shield Guards...
"Wah!"
Red Spirit flew point to lead the way. Based on earlier scouting, it knew the fastest route to circle around to the vanguard’s rear.
Since it was leading Redrose Shield Guards, which were speed demons, Red Spirit’s group quickly vanished from Purple Vortex’s sight.
Purple Vortex saw that they’d all started at the same time, yet its own team was moving like molasses.
It couldn’t help getting antsy.
"Roar!"
It kept signaling the Purple Thornblade Shield Guards to pick up the pace,
But the Purple Thornblade Shield Guards stuck to their guns at the original speed.
Purple Vortex roared several times in frustration,
The response it got was a chorus of roars:
"Roar" X6
The Purple Thornblade Shield Guards made it clear that they were naturally slow—it wasn’t like they were sandbagging. What good would rushing do?
"Roar..."
That made perfect sense.
Purple Vortex threw in the towel and could only dial back its own speed to match the Purple Thornblade Shield Guards’ pace as they pushed forward.
Carlos up in the clouds saw the whole show.
After the retainers led the Shield Guards to split into two groups, Carlos climbed to high altitude to keep tabs on their every move.
"Good, good, they’re all following orders to the letter—no cowboy stuff."
...
The blazing sunlight grew more punishing by the minute.
Inside the black sand army vanguard’s military tents, hordes of black sand soldiers woke up and crawled out of their tents just like back in the day.
Black sand soldiers: Spirit 19, Strength 7, Constitution 7, Speed 1.
Their whole bodies were wrapped in pitch-black sand clothing.
The exposed parts were all dark brown grit.
They’d completely turned into sand sculptures (sand-shaped figures).
When they walked, their limbs made swishing sounds, and dark brown sand grains kept falling off.
The vanguard’s black sand soldiers were mostly packing curved sabers—pretty basic gear.
They quickly gathered in the camp’s central clearing, fell into formation—thousands of them, a massive dark sea.
A killing aura spread, and the air temperature dropped several degrees.
Standing in front of this vanguard force was a tall humanoid sand sculpture.
You could see it wore a layer of sand armor, with a pretty hefty presence.
Its sandy eyeballs rolled around, sizing up its own army.
This humanoid sand sculpture was one of the black sand army’s three top generals.
Looking up at the sky and sensing the timing was right, it drew its great curved saber with a sharp ring.
This great curved saber gleamed particularly bright under the sunlight.
It let out a battle cry:
"Heh heh kill!!!"
In a heartbeat, the black sand soldiers below all drew their curved sabers and let out earth-shaking roars:
"Heh heh kill!"
"Heh heh kill!"
"Heh heh kill!"
"..."
They started their usual war drills...
