Chapter 806: 39. The second
"How much do you love reporting to the police, geez..."
After hanging up the phone, Yang Chunxue kept staring at Lu Li with a peculiar look.
She started to suspect whether Lu Li has a habit of reporting to the police, just like people who can’t resist crushing instant noodles or sticking their hands into rice sacks.
"I don’t love reporting to the police, it’s just that contacting them is the best way to resolve most troubles."
"But you’re a Ghost Envoy, you’ve got supernatural powers, and you have a... resentful spirit, beautiful girl!"
"Having extraordinary powers shouldn’t be a reason to break the rules."
Yang Chunxue squinted her light red eyes: "So how do you explain impersonating a police officer?"
Ten seconds, twenty seconds, thirty seconds...
"You won’t even bother to explain, right?!" Yang Chunxue shouted angrily.
Yang Chunxue eventually gave up the idea of reasoning with Lu Li, and almost understood: He has his own code of conduct and isn’t swayed by others’ words—regardless of whether they make sense.
She leaned back in the chair dejectedly, dazed, her gaze following the movement of the windshield wipers.
"Are we getting closer to the next tentacle?"
At some point, Yang Chunxue’s voice broke the silence.
"Yes."
"Speaking of which, the tentacles we’ve encountered seem quite weird." Normally, Yang Chunxue would act without thinking, but now she pondered: "Two were on decaying ghosts, one was inside a possessed corpse, one was in clothing, and another was hidden in a wardrobe creating an interdimensional space to trap you. There’s no logic between these tentacles at all!"
"If there were logic, they wouldn’t be considered bizarre."
The steering wheel turned sharply, the view outside changed, and the car drove uphill, turning into a parking lot.
"We’re here."
"So quickly?!" Yang Chunxue gasped, peering outside the window.
Through the gray drizzle stood a high-rise over twenty floors tall.
"It’s really close this time."
Boom.
The car shook slightly, umbrellas opened, Lu Li stepped out of the car.
His dark eyes under his tousled hair lifted, and the blood-colored tentacles falling from the sky descended into the building.
The lobby was busy with employees, the marble floor reflecting the light from the ceiling.
Unable to determine which floor the tentacle landed on, Lu Li resorted to the simplest method—searching floor by floor.
He stepped onto the second floor from the safety passage and entered a securities company.
His eyes swept over the office area, and Lu Li headed towards the edge conference room, reaching out to push the door open.
"This month’s target you must—"
The voice abruptly stopped, and the dozen figures in the meeting simultaneously looked towards the door.
"Sorry, wrong room."
Closing the door again, Lu Li proceeded to the neighboring general manager’s office and opened the door.
"Sorry, wrong room."
Saying the same words as he exited, then entered the next office.
"Sorry, wrong room."
Room by room, Lu Li investigated, with some employees noticing his continuous search but not stepping forward to stop him. They just followed his movements with strange looks until he left the company premises.
Muted whispers began.
Outside the hallway, Lu Li surveyed the male and female restrooms again before moving onto the third floor.
Repeating on the third floor, Lu Li found no trace of the tentacles.
As he traversed the safety passage to the fourth floor, passing by the elevator, the doors suddenly opened, and several security personnel in uniforms surrounded Lu Li.
Lu Li’s frequent wandering through various floors and rooms had been noticed by the security in the monitor room.
"Hello, I’m the building’s property manager. Our security saw you, is there anything we can assist you with?" the manager in a business suit spoke politely.
Lu Li lifted his coat to reveal the gun holster on his waist, stating succinctly, "Police, investigating, looking for someone."
The eyes of those around him narrowed, and the property manager realized, "Oh oh, officer, hello, if you’re looking for someone, perhaps you could check our surveillance room."
"No need, the surveillance won’t have it, just don’t interfere with me," Lu Li declined the manager’s offer to help, leaving the elevator room.
Five minutes later, after searching the fourth floor, there was still no sign.
The building had 28 floors, housing numerous businesses. Searching each room was not only troublesome but time-consuming.
Lu Li decided to change tactics.
"Chunxue, float up, find the floor with the rotting smell lingering."
"Got it."
Yang Chunxue floated upwards, disappearing into the ceiling.
In her perception, the dark essence remained on the second floor, revolved once, then continued upwards.
The perception broke due to distance and barriers, the dark essence representing Yang Chunxue vanished.
Yang Chunxue didn’t keep Lu Li waiting long; a few minutes later, her voice arrived before she did.
"I found it! On the fourteenth floor!"
Almost simultaneously, Lu Li reached out to press the button for the stairs at the fourth floor, then entered the elevator.
...
14th floor.
Ding—
As the elevator door opened, a faint stench wafted through the air.
This smell intensified as Lu Li stepped out of the elevator, reaching a climax upon pushing open the glass doors to a law office.
The suffocating, intolerable stench of rotten flesh permeated the air, even the air fresheners and perfumes couldn’t mask the foul odor, instead making it more acrid.
Employees in suits passing by all wore pinched expressions, looking pale.
"Hello sir, this is, may I help you with anything?" The receptionist slightly bowed, smiling in inquiry.
The smile was a bit forced, possibly due to the pervasive smell in the office area.
"The smell is severe, it might have already rotted." Lu Li murmured softly.
"I’m sorry, sir, what did you say?" The receptionist tilted her head in confusion, her ponytail swinging.
"I’m looking for someone who is currently rotting." Lu Li approached the reception. "If she can still be considered a person."
The reception girl hesitated, eyes briefly showing surprise.
She certainly knows something.
"The Weird And Multicolored Detective Agency Exorcist, Lu Li." Lu Li displayed a postcard, retrieving it when the receptionist subconsciously accepted it, continuing: "I notice everyone here is stained with the evil aura of demons, including you. You must know something, right?"
Yang Chunxue frowned, tucked her neck in, making a double chin, looking at Lu Li with disgust.
How could this guy say something so cheesy and embarrassing so calmly?
The receptionist girl forced a smile, "I don’t understand what you mean..."
Lu Li’s tone remained unchanged: "Let’s try a simple question. Where is the source of this stench coming from?"
She instinctively glanced towards the right side of the office area.
"Thank you."
Lu Li nodded in gratitude, turned, and walked towards the office area.
"You spoke those lines quite smoothly, why?" Yang Chunxue floated behind, observing Lu Li as if she saw a ghost.
"One of the lines from my routine when I used to hustle as an exorcist detective."
The stench intensified, and the brightly lit office area had about half the staff wearing masks while working.
Lu Li stood at the edge of the office area, his gaze swept over, landing on the middle row of desks.
The ethereal red tentacles descended from the ceiling, penetrating the head of a figure with shoulder-length hair.
Is it her?
