Detective Agency of the Bizarre -
Chapter 441 - 441 298
441: 298.
Faceless Figures 441: 298.
Faceless Figures Thud—
The small figure that climbed into the Police Station abruptly froze.
After quietly listening for a dozen seconds, he carefully lifted his foot off the wooden board and stealthily ascended the staircase.
In the absolutely silent Police Station, the creaking sounds of the wooden stairs underfoot were as loud as if struck by a hammer; Oliver involuntarily opened his mouth, doing his best to make each step as gentle as possible.
This motion reminded him of his past experiences as a thief, but getting caught this time would undoubtedly lead to a much more miserable end…
Oliver shivered, his movements becoming even more cautious.
The Police Station’s second floor was draped in twilight, the blood-red color from outside the street seeping in through intact and broken windows, casting a dim pallor over the offices.
All that remained were silhouettes, barely discernible.
A head slowly and silently rose from the last step of the staircase, looking left and right before crawling up the stairs.
Oliver stood up, hunching over and moving behind the office desk nearest to the staircase, peeking over it to scrutinize the second floor.
He didn’t find any suspicious presence.
Taking a long breath, Oliver lightly tapped his fingers on the desk surface.
Tap-tap—tap-tap—tap-tap—
After a few seconds, Oliver held his breath; for a long while, he heard no response.
There might not be any living people in the Police Station.
Crawling out from under the desk, Oliver began to search for something on the second floor of the Police Station.
On one desk, he surprisingly found a half-eaten baguette, wolfing it down before gulping the tea with a smoky flavor next to it.
Rubbing his icy, bloated stomach, Oliver headed towards the Police Chief’s solitary office at the far end.
The door was half-open; Oliver first stealthily peeked for a while and, after ensuring it was safe, pushed the door open and slipped into the Police Chief’s office, nimble as a monkey.
Tick-tock—tick-tock—tick-tock—
The office was not completely quiet; the pendulum in the corner wall clock swung, emitting a rhythmic ticking sound.
Oliver glanced over—the time was less than five minutes to midnight.
Hopefully the daylight will bring improvement, and those Exorcists will kill off all these creatures!
Oliver thought, approaching the desk and pulling open a drawer.
Clatter—
A silver revolver encased in a leather holster emerged.
“Excellent.”
Oliver murmured, taking the revolver out of its holster, carefully examining it, and checking the bullets before stuffing it into his jacket pocket.
He searched the office a bit more and found a half-empty box of ammunition, a half-full water jug, and some sweets.
He took several sips of water, pocketed the bullets and sweets, and left a candy unwrapped on the recliner before popping it into his mouth.
So just wait here for the day’s rescue to arrive.
Oliver thought, pulling out a chair intending to sit, but suddenly, he remembered something, a deep fear washing over his face.
The frightened Oliver, disregarding the need to keep his voice low, rushed to the clock to check the time.
The minute hand was about to overlap with the hour hand.
The clock might ring at any moment!
Oliver’s actions were faster than his thoughts; before he had a plan, his hands had instinctively opened the clock and removed the gear inside.
Missing a gear, the swinging pendulum finally came to rest.
Oliver took a deep breath, realizing he had broken out in a cold sweat and his heart was pounding ceaselessly.
Just to be safe, Oliver dismantled a few more gears, ensuring it could no longer chime before closing the clock.
Suddenly, Oliver looked towards the door with a peculiar expression.
He cautiously approached the door, peering outside.
Thud-thud—thud-thud—thud-thud—
In the dimly lit office, a light tapping sound slowly emerged.
…
After quietly observing for dozens of seconds, Lu Li retreated back into the alley and picked up the meat wings that were thrown into the puddle and draped them over himself again.
“What is this for?” Jojo asked, instinctively imitating Lu Li and covering herself with the meat wings.
“Both followers of the Evil Gods will attack humans,” Lu Li replied lowly, revealing those eyes dark as night.
“After disguising, only one follower of the Evil God will attack us.”
If you can’t eliminate trouble, then you make it as small as possible.
Disguise might not be completely effective, but as long as it could prevent the followers from discerning them at a certain distance, that was enough.
With all preparations made, Lu Li and Jojo, under the covert protection of Anna, crept out of the alley and advanced silently along the building.
Perhaps because they made no sound or perhaps because the disguise was effective, the duo moving stealthily on the dark red street weren’t noticed by wandering followers.
When they reached a building adjacent to the Police Station, Lu Li stopped and crouched down, with Jojo quickly following suit and lowering herself, looking ahead.
Several heads floated in the air like balloons, clustering in front of the Police Station’s main entrance, continually bumping into it and making a heavy thudding noise.
She glanced at Lu Li and saw that he was looking up above them.
Jojo followed his gaze and saw the second floor of the building was nearly destroyed, with the collapsed roof pressing down on one side, revealing a large opening, with splintered wood strewn all around.
“Upstairs.”
Lu Li whispered, moving to the side of the door.
With a faint “click,” the latch was removed, and the wooden door opened slightly.
Lu Li pushed the door and entered the dimly lit house, followed closely by Jojo.
Creak—
The door closed again.
Only the first floor was relatively intact; standing at the foot of the stairs, they could see the dark red clouds through the broken roof.
Walking up the stairs that creaked with each step, Lu Li and Jojo reached the second floor.
The entire wall facing the Police Station had disappeared, leaving the Police Station’s walls and windows fully exposed.
Lu Li and Jojo stood at the edge of the gap, avoiding the Night Devils patrolling the skies and looked towards the opposite side.
They could enter the Police Station through the windows.
Whoosh—
Suddenly, a noise came from behind them.
The two turned around at the same time, with Lu Li gripping the Spirit-Calling Gun and Anna’s presence surging.
From the deepest part of the collapsed ruins, a figure struggled to crawl out of a narrow space, shouting at Lu Li, “Are you alive?
Save me, please save me—”
It was a middle-aged man, who had lost both legs and could only drag himself closer to Lu Li.
Lu Li frowned; the man’s voice was a bit too loud.
Without letting go of the gun handle, Lu Li approached the figure.
At that moment, the unexpected occurred.
A large amount of viscous liquid surged from beneath the floorboards, like sludge coalescing into the unsettling silhouette of a woman in a white dress, standing beside the middle-aged man, her back to Lu Li and the others.
Crack.
Everyone could hear the chilling sound of chewing; in an instant, the middle-aged man’s face vanished, leaving only a bloody, featureless cavity where his features had been, which then thudded onto the floor, silent.
Having killed the middle-aged man, the woman in the white dress turned to face Lu Li and the others.
Jojo’s scalp tingled; she couldn’t bear to look directly because the woman also had featureless cavities where her face should have been.
Behind her, blood poured steadily from the motionless corpse.
The woman in the white dress seemed to be “observing” Lu Li and the others for a few seconds before her body melted away, seeping into the wood and vanishing without a trace.
She disappeared as suddenly as she had appeared, leaving behind only a corpse with an empty face.
