Detective Agency of the Bizarre -
Chapter 401 - 401 258
401: 258.
David 401: 258.
David “Viscount had just called for me,” Maid Irene also wanted to stay by the young miss’s side, but she had tasks to attend to and helplessly said, “I will have the servant Lu Li and others go with the young miss.”
“Viscount had just called for me, I will have the servant Lu Li and others go with the young miss,” the Baron said with a slightly cheerier tone, pleased that he had nothing else to do.
Sara nodded, called the servant David from outside the door, and asked him to bring a few books from the shelf along with her to the backyard treehouse.
What bad luck…
David sighed helplessly; outside the mansion, the storm was raging with flashes of lightning and torrents of rain.
After exchanging glances with Lu Li and others, David, carrying the books turned dark from the shelf, followed “Sara” out of the mansion.
The storm, laden with rain, pelted down harshly, making it hard for David to breathe as he squinted and followed behind the dark silhouette of “Sara.”
“Put them there,” Sara instructed as she walked into the treehouse, pointing at the desk.
The treehouse was situated on the edge of the backyard, only a dozen meters from the Shore of Agate Lake.
Aside from withered vegetation and a pebbled path, there was nothing there.
David had no choice but to place the books roughly where “Sara” had indicated.
He faced away from Sara while obscure and ancient sounds continued.
Sara gently closed the door of the treehouse, blocking the scene of the backyard.
She turned around, looked at the servant David’s back, and slowly clenched the scissors behind her.
“They are traitors, they are the murderers who killed Adam,” Sara told herself as she approached David from behind, scissors held high in her hand.
…
The idle four remained waiting in the bedroom.
Lu Li stood in front of the balcony.
Usually, from the balcony, one could view all of Agate Lake and Belfast, but the stormy veil that darkened the sky obscured his view of the backyard, a pale contour briefly illuminated by a flash of lightning in the clouds.
Unlike the somewhat relaxed Baron Petra and others, as time passed, the calmer the situation grew, the more Lu Li could sense the tension suppressed beneath this calm.
Evil spirits would never narrate a normal story where everyone survives to the grand finale.
But when would the danger appear?
In the bedroom, Petra and Lola were whispering something.
The Baron leaned back in the sofa, and the butler stood beside him, his gaze repeatedly assessing Lu Li’s silhouette.
After a while, Petra took the initiative to speak to Lu Li, “Any thoughts about the bloodstains on the carpet?”
Lu Li shook his head.
“It might belong to Adam… the male protagonist,” Lola analyzed while leaning on a broom, “Then the female protagonist pretends to be injured to obscure the source, after all, we can’t tell if the wound on the female protagonist is real or not.”
As he spoke, he looked towards the Baron.
“I hadn’t noticed,” said the Baron, unable to discern fine details on the dark outline.
“His body wasn’t in the bedroom,” Lu Li replied.
“That’s what I don’t understand…” Lola said, troubled.
He might have a way to deal with the bizarre, but not with puzzles.
With scant clues, Petra could only vaguely remind, “From now on, everyone needs to be cautious.
The story has become dangerous.”
The risks that put them in peril were twofold: Sara discovering their act of betrayal, or the Resurrection Ritual being malevolent, requiring someone to pay the price.
At this moment, David being taken away alone by Sara did not seem like a good sign at all.
The next sound, cryptic and ancient, rose nearly two hours later.
The noon sky was as dim as twilight, exuding an oppressive feeling that made it difficult to breathe.
[Maid Irene instructed the servant David to stay in the treehouse and wait, while Sara returned to the bedroom.
Maid Irene was trimming the potted plants on the cutting balcony, and the bloodstains next to the desk on the carpet had vanished.
“Miss, are you feeling better?” Maid Irene asked concernedly.]
“Miss, are you feeling better?” the Baron said expressionlessly.
[In response to Maid Irene’s concern, Sara nodded slightly with a faint smile, “Thank you, Irene, I am much better now.” As she spoke, the pressure in her heart slowly dissipated, sensing the emotional change in her mistress, Maid Irene blinked in bewilderment.]
[“You can go about your duties, I would like to rest for a while,” Sara said.
Maid Irene changed the bandage on her hand and left the bedroom with the other servants.]
Lu Li and his companions reached the corridor, continuing to listen to the story.
[Once Irene had left, Sara sat at the desk.
She was well aware that the treehouse was not secluded.
If she were to continue, she needed a more concealed location to perform the Resurrection Ritual… and to hide Adam’s body.]
[She soon chose the woodshed in the backyard, not too far from the treehouse, usually inaccessible to the servants.
She could secretly take Adam there at night and hide him in the woodshed’s basement.]
[But these plans would have to wait until after dark, when night fell, and she could secretly slip out of her room and have David move Adam to the basement.]
The cryptic and ancient sound briefly ceased, to be glossed over in the ensuing period until night arrived.
The people outside exchanged glances, left the corridor, and retreated to a place beyond the reach of the cryptic and ancient sounds.
The plot revealed in this segment during Sara’s visit was quite substantial.
Adam’s body was hidden by Sara in the treehouse, Sara had already started the Resurrection Ritual from the Book of Death, and David, for reasons unknown, had chosen to assist Sara.
“We could call David over,” Lola suggested, still holding that broom.
“Better not,” Petra responded, “David must have his reasons for doing this, and if he wanted to talk, he would approach us on his own.”
“You’re right,” Lola shrugged.
Lu Li and the others sat down at the long table.
The butler clapped his hands to summon the maids, instructing them to contact the chef to prepare lunch.
During the entire afternoon following lunch, Lu Li and his companions had nothing to do, and David remained absent.
Petra felt a sense of unease.
As evening approached, he and Lu Li along with Laura ventured near the backyard and caught sight of a figure sheltering from the rain under the lamppost by the Shore of Agate Lake.
This somewhat eased Petra.
Had David not returned because of plot constraints?
Or had he uncovered some vital information?
[Clouds aflame with the evening sun set the backdrop for the distant sunset, as Sara, who had been nearly asleep all afternoon, woke up.
She stared blankly at the dark red clouds on the horizon before walking barefoot to the balcony.]
[She saw a silhouette in the treehouse, which seemed to have noticed her too, and looked up at her.]
[Sara waved, signaling for the servant David to come closer.]
The Baron’s Mansion was ablaze with lights, and outside, the darkness was left with nothing but shadows, the street lamps illuminating only a tiny area.
After a moment’s wait, the sound of David’s wet footsteps came from around the corridor’s corner.
Under the gaze of all present, a dark, thick silhouette appeared at the end of the corridor.
