Detective Agency of the Bizarre -
Chapter 394 - 394 Two hundred fifty-one
394: Two hundred fifty-one.
Engagement 394: Two hundred fifty-one.
Engagement “Why did you have the servants spy on me?” Sara, who normally regarded her father with awe, took a deep breath and stared directly at her father, who looked much older than he did during the day.
Feeling the difference in his daughter, the Viscount fell silent for a moment, setting down the ledger in his hand, “If not for that, you would have already eloped with that poor boy.”
Her father’s answer confirmed the suspicions in Sara’s heart, and the pain of betrayal by a close friend elicited a cold laugh from her, “A father actually spies on his own daughter…
”
The Viscount sighed deeply, seriously addressing his daughter, “An Earl like Fran is not someone a noble with a small fief like mine can aspire to marry.
He agreed to the engagement solely because of a contract amongst our forefathers.
The Earl’s power can protect our family for decades…
What do you think they would do if they found out you were secretly meeting men?
Our family could be destroyed!
For the sake of the family, for your father…
Sara interrupted her father’s words with a cold laugh, “Is the so-called nobility about sacrificing the happiness of their offspring?”
“Sacrifice happiness?” The sharp attitude of his daughter enraged the Viscount, and he couldn’t help but raise his voice, “You have no idea how hard it is to come by the life you’re living now!
How many people in the town can’t even have a full meal a day, how many see no hope in front of them!
One piece of your jewelry is worth several months of their salary, everything you enjoy is earned by our ancestors!”
Sara turned her head to look at her father, who had lost his composure, and suddenly asked, “Did you love my mother?”
The expression on the Viscount paused in that moment, he slowly said, “Love is but a fleeting passion of youth; perhaps now you think I am bartering my daughter for benefits, but in time you will understand the significance of my actions.”
“So you are already old!” Sara lifted her snow-white neck, proud as a swan.
The stance of the daughter reminded the Viscount of something, perhaps the past, and his tone gradually softened, yet his words carried an uncompromising firmness, “You are not to leave your room the next two days.
The day after tomorrow I will hold a banquet to invite the Earl and his youngest son, and you will be engaged then.
Go back and rest.”
Sara looked deeply at her father one last time and turned to leave the Family Head’s room.
Sara, in her white dress, seemed like a ghost drifting down the corridor.
Unknowingly, she arrived at Maid Irene’s room.
Through the thin door, she thought she could hear the even breathing from within.
…
The rain continued to drizzle, and the sudden drop in temperature today added an extra layer of clothing to the pedestrians on the street.
The warm and bright Baron’s mansion seemed like a different world from the outside, where the Baron and the Exorcists sat at the dining table.
“One could probably only taste such fresh caviar in Belfast,” Petra said as she pursed her lips, unable to resist expressing her admiration.
Baron Joseph nodded with a light smile, his gaze fell on the person to his right, and spoke softly, “Is there anything you’re not satisfied with?”
“No, thank you for your hospitality.”
Lu Li dabbed the corners of his mouth with a handkerchief, glancing at the clock.
6:40 am, half an hour until “Sara” wakes up.
“If you like it, I can prepare it for you every day,” the Baron implied.
Petra suddenly felt the caviar in her spoon had lost its flavor.
“We’ll talk about that later.”
This unabashed supplementing of nutrition won’t last too long, perhaps after it ends, they can ask the Baron to have the daily meals delivered to the Detective Agency?
After the Baron had breakfast, he left with the Head Maid to change his clothes.
Petra and the others discussed the potential plot developments that might occur today and then headed to the bedroom with the butler.
The Baron still covered his skin with the dark and freckled makeup in case the story required her to leave the manor.
At 7:10, the obscure ancient voice, however, did not ring out on time.
Petra and the others exchanged glances, perhaps there was a new twist to the story?
After a long wait, as the clock hands neared eight o’clock, the obscure ancient voice finally spoke.
[Chapter Six: The Resolute Decision]
[Sara woke up groggily, sleepiness rushing over her like a tide.
It took her a moment to remember who she was.
“Miss, you slept in today,” Maid Irene said with a light chuckle.
But Sara did not engage in conversation with Irene in her usual lazy, cat-like tone.]
[“What’s the matter, Miss?
Did you have a nightmare?” Maid Irene asked, puzzled.]
“Miss, you slept in today, what’s the matter, Miss?
Did you have a nightmare?” Baron Joseph read calmly.
[“It’s nothing,” Sara shook her head and said, seemingly becoming her usual self again, “Did Adam tell you when he’s coming?” “In the morning,” Maid Irene opened the wardrobe and said to Sara, “What would you like to wear today, Miss?” “That blue pleated skirt,” Sara answered.]
Baron Joseph opened his own wardrobe and, amidst an array of dazzling dresses, hesitated briefly before reluctantly choosing a sky-blue pleated dress he liked the least.
The men servants including Lu Li briefly left, and when they returned a short while later, Sara had changed into that dress.
It was indistinguishable from what she had worn before, still reflecting no color but pitch black.
Perhaps it was Adam’s imminent arrival, nerves rippled through Sara, making her much quieter than usual, which was evident in the few sentences spoken by the obscure ancient voice.
[The servant Lu Li rushed in hastily, informing Sara that Adam had arrived.]
Some time passed, and the chapter’s story officially began.
This had nothing to do with the four servants, whose tasks included cleaning the spotless bedroom and pruning the nonexistent potted plants.
Only Baron Joseph, as Sara’s personal maid, accompanied her to the drawing room.
This departure took quite some time, and close to noon, Baron Joseph and “Sara” returned, the latter going to her etiquette class, while the Baron recounted what had transpired as soon as the obscure ancient voice stopped paying attention to them.
As David had speculated, the Viscount of the noble class certainly would not allow his daughter to be with a poor boy, even if Adam’s forebears were mere merchants.
The anticipated argument did not ensue.
Like an elder, the Viscount spoke at length to Adam, calmly informing him that he and Sara were not suited for each other.
Sara could not adapt to the life of a commoner, and their affection was founded on an illusion in part, but reality was cruel.
This was undoubtedly more devastating than having the servants chase Adam out.
Soon after, Sara hurried over, arguing with her father.
The Viscount instructed the butler to take Sara away and told Adam, before she left, that Sara was already engaged to the Earl’s younger son and that an engagement party would be held the following evening.
In the end, Adam left the manor dejected, carrying the gift he had prepared with great care.
The story did not end there.
