Chapter 51: Wrong Party

Chapter fifty one

The air was thick with smoke and the sharp smell of alcohol. In one corner, a couple was making out so intensely that I had to look away.

Another group was passing around something that definitely wasn’t a regular cigarette.

My hands started shaking. "William, we need to leave."

"What? Why?" He had to shout over the pounding music. He looked very comfortable while my soul was already leaving me.

In my head I was expecting a kids’ party, I mean with the costumes and all, but this was way more than I bargained for.

"Look around! This isn’t a normal party. If my mom finds out.."

"Relax, no one’s going to tell her."

I gave him an apprehensive look, easy for him to say when he wasn’t the one who’s going to be grounded.

"Isn’t this kind of illegal? What if we get arrested or something?"

He huffed, rolling his eyes. "You watch too many movies, We are already here, so we might as well get what we came for. Remember what I said about undercover? Well, I know you remember the detention teacher who was beaten half to death?"

I nodded slowly, still not quite getting where the discussion was headed.

"Well there are rumors that Vince and his friends did it. I also heard he’s into some illegal stuff, which is why I am here, to investigate him."

My mouth hung open in disbelief. This was the reason he had brought me here? It took a moment before I could finally find my voice again.

"What! Are you crazy? This was the urgent thing you had? And to think that you dragged me into your obsession with him!" I yelled at the top of my voice, uncaring that the people might hear us. If Vince was here, then Kieran may be...

"Will, I’m sorry, I have to go..."

If William heard me, he gave no indication as he grabbed my arm. "Come on, let’s find my cousin."

I wanted to run back to the car, but William was already pulling me through the crowd. People bumped into us, drinks sloshing, and I tried not to stare at the chaos around us.

"There he is!" William pointed to a guy with dark blonde hair who looked like an older version of him. He was one of the few people not wearing a mask "Alex! Over here!"

Alex turned around, a drink in his hand and a grin on his face. "Will! You actually came!"

His gaze so similar to William’s directed to me at that moment, as though he was trying to figure out who I was.

"Well aren’t you going to introduce your friend to me? He’s pretty hot," He whistled. My face grew heated under his stare. Thankfully I had my mask on.

He had never spared me a second glance each time I met him in William’s house, so why now? Was it because he didn’t recognize me?

"Well he doesn’t give two shits about you, so eyes off him!"

"Nice to meet you," Alex said, then called over to someone behind him. "Xander! Come meet Will’s friend!"

A tall guy who was also not wearing a mask walked towards us.

"Well, hello there," The Xander said. He looked to be around our age too. "Great costume choice."

"Thanks," I managed, shifting uncomfortably under his stare. He was staring way too hard, even William seemed to notice as his arm wrapped around my neck protectively, Xander looked away, but I caught the hint of a smirk. What the hell was that?

I suddenly had the urge to pee. I told William and he opted to accompany me.

That was when I spotted trouble, on one table at the edge of the room were faces I fully recognized. The popular crew from school.

Amanda and Hailey.

Thankfully none of them had recognized us. I guess I still have to be grateful for the wig.

My heart was still pounding hard, was Kieran here or not? I already felt like this was some sick hide and seek game.

"I’ll wait for you here." William said.

I nodded and entered the bathroom. I quickly did my business and washed my hands in the sink. My gaze caught on my reflection and I gasped. I almost didn’t recognize myself, there’s no way Kieran would even recognize me, especially with the mask covering half of my face.

Why was I so worried?

I stepped out of the bathroom expecting to see William waiting for me. But he was nowhere to be seen.

Where did he go? If he ditched me then I was really going to murder him.

In haste to search for him, I didn’t look where I was going and I ended up bumping hard into a body. My face hitting the other person’s chest.

A groan escaped my mouth at the pain that flared in my forehead. Was he made from stones??!

"Move away," The cold impatient voice sounded and everything in me froze.

Kieran?

Oh god, take me now!

But wait... He doesn’t recognize me. I tried to pull away from him, only for me to gasp out in sheer horror.

The jewelled sharp edge of my mask was stuck on his shirt.

I swallowed hard, my heart frantically jumping in my chest. I couldn’t even speak. He would surely recognize my voice.

What should I do?

He was about to shove me aside when I clung tightly to his shirt, pointing to the area where my mask got stuck.

"Are you a mute or something?" He spoke in the same rude impatient voice.

I could barely manage a nod and I envisioned him rolling his eyes. A tingle spread through me when he touched the side of my ears to free my mask from his shirt.

I bit my lips hard so I wouldn’t giggle aloud. I always was extremely ticklish at the spot behind my ears, but it was getting more difficult by the second.

"I can’t take it off like this. You’ll have to take off your mask from behind your ears."

What?? No freaking way!
