Chapter 879: Chapter 671: Hidden Danger and Moving South
Mist Forest.
The white mist shrouding the entire forest loomed overhead, drifting without the presence of a breeze, as if it were a living entity moving of its own accord.
At the forest’s edge, Roger and Hillrenes sat across from each other, separated by a meticulously crafted oak table. The chair backs and armrests provided just the right amount of comfort.
Leaning slightly back, Roger noticed Hillrenes’ projection sinking into the chair’s backrest, as though her form possessed a tangible physicality.
Hillrenes didn’t touch the teacup on the table. "The matter is simple: you retrieve the wings for me, and I’ll help you save that girl. A fair exchange."
"Where is it exactly?"
"Tell me everything you know!"
"The good news is, you don’t need to venture deep into the heart of the forest, so at least you’ll avoid crossing paths with any wandering Fifth Tier Transcendents."
"It’s not here."
Hillrenes gestured in a particular direction.
"It’s on the southern continent. Who would have thought that something I did on a whim all those years ago would now become the only lifeline."
"Go to Tabani. I’ll give you something that will guide you to the destination."
As she spoke, Hillrenes raised her hand and pressed her slender finger to her forehead. Her smooth brow rippled like water, and a moment later, her delicate finger penetrated directly into her skull.
A faint glow emanated from her hand. In the next instant, an eyeball, roughly the size of a peach pit, appeared in Hillrenes’ palm.
"Thump."
The eyeball was placed on the table.
"I have hidden those two items in a narrow gap. Through conventional means, entering is impossible, which is why you need this Eye of Truth."
"The eyeball contains the approximate location in the real world. Find it, and then use the Eye of Truth to identify the entrance."
Hillrenes’ tone was casual.
"The rest is simple: open the door, find the treasure, then leave."
"What else is inside apart from the two items you mentioned?"
Roger wasn’t buying into the simplicity of her plan.
"A minor inconvenience."
"Inside, there’s a high chance you’ll encounter someone. If he’s still alive, he’s probably gone mad by now—after all, it’s been so many years..."
"A pitiful soul. Back then, I used a small trick to deceive him, making him believe that inside was a treasure that could greatly enhance his powers."
"But in the end, I trapped him in there for eternity." Hillrenes frowned as if pondering briefly.
"If you’re lucky, he might have already died in there, having exhausted his lifespan."
Roger understood the underlying implications in her words.
"This person overcame the limits of mortality?"
If so, it meant the enemy Roger was about to face, even if not a Fifth Tier, would likely be close to it.
Not exactly good news.
"Naturally, an ordinary Fourth Tier wouldn’t even be worth remembering." Hillrenes appeared nonchalant.
A thought flashed in Roger’s mind, leading to another possible interpretation.
"If that’s the case, then the items you left in there..."
"Don’t worry about that." Hillrenes waved her hand dismissively.
"Those items have already been completely transformed by me, imbued with my unique imprint. As long as I’m alive, he’ll never truly possess them."
"It’s like sitting before a lavish banquet. You can see every detail of the food, smell its tantalizing aroma, even touch and swallow it..."
"But it’s all meaningless. You can’t taste the true flavor of the feast, and these items will never nourish the body."
Roger furrowed his brows. Hillrenes’ description momentarily conjured some unsavory images in his mind.
But he understood her meaning immediately.
Unless one’s strength far surpassed Hillrenes’, erasing her imprint was impossible, let alone absorbing and converting the two World Fragments.
Even without Amanda’s matters, this reason alone ensured she didn’t worry about Roger seizing the treasures for himself after obtaining them.
"He’s someone who preaches righteousness and justice, but the weapon in your hand should be capable of countering him."
"Remember, no matter what he says, don’t believe him. Kill him, retrieve what I want, and save your girl."
"It’s that simple."
Roger lightly tapped the table. "Specifics?"
"His powers, his traits, and..."
"It’s been too long." Hillrenes cut Roger off mid-sentence.
"Why would I waste my energy remembering such trivial details?"
Roger said nothing, studying Hillrenes’ expression carefully. It was clear this woman was lying.
This heightened Roger’s wariness.
To Hillrenes now, the opponent from back then might be irrelevant. But at the time, rather than kill him, Hillrenes chose to imprison him, which spoke volumes.
His strength forced the Hillrenes of that era to resort to such a method.
Over time, as her powers grew to a level where she could easily crush him, she still chose to leave him be.
Partly because it no longer mattered, but perhaps also because Hillrenes wanted to torment him in this way.
Things were getting interesting.
An adversary like that—there’s no way she had forgotten his abilities and traits. If she avoided the topic, it might be to preserve Roger’s confidence...
Or perhaps she had another motive entirely?
Now cornered and out of options, Roger had no choice but to lower his head for the moment. Since he couldn’t glean any more information, he decided to conclude their conversation.
