Chapter 820 - 642 Extreme Path
Chapter 820: Chapter 642 Extreme Path
The sky was somewhat overcast. Looking up, thread-like volcanic ash drifted down from above. Roger reached out his hand, but the floating particles in the air vanished abruptly as they approached him.
"This feeling... it’s so familiar, like the Land of Eternal Darkness."
Yuan Guanghai spoke.
Squawk!
A piercing bird cry suddenly echoed from mid-air, and Roger’s gaze locked onto a gray, bald monstrous bird.
Its size was comparable to that of an average adult woman.
But its body was entirely featherless—bald. Peculiarly, crude pieces of clothing covered certain key parts of its body.
Almost as if it understood the concept of modesty.
Yet, the creature was far from resembling a human; its head was grotesquely oversized, with a massive eyeball dominating the upper half. The eyeball was a swirling void of chaos, devoid of any trace of sentience.
Its beak was long and ochre-yellow. Even when shut, its jagged, interlocking edges could be glimpsed—sharp and menacing.
Squawk, squawk!
Spotting Roger and Yuan Guanghai, the bird emitted another screech and immediately bolted from the heavens toward them with alarming speed!
Yuan Guanghai shifted slightly to shield Roger. The monster bird’s strength was not overwhelming, roughly equivalent to a Third Tier cultivator of the mundane world.
That might make it formidable in the real world, but here in the Everworld, it was nothing more than a common monster.
Buzz!
The Broad Sword in Yuan Guanghai’s hand stood upright before him. He didn’t even need to strike; the bird-like creature was repelled violently upon nearing him, as if flung away by a powerful shockwave!
Quivering uncontrollably, it went limp mid-air and plummeted to the ground.
Rustle, rustle, rustle.
Just then, a faint rustling sound came from a nearby forest. Moments later, a filthy middle-aged face emerged within Yuan Guanghai’s line of sight.
It appeared to be an ordinary man, crawling out from the thick bushes. Judging by his disheveled appearance, he seemed to have been traveling for a long time; his body was smeared with dirt, and his cheeks were scratched by the dense branches.
Yuan Guanghai tensed up momentarily, but as he observed the man’s demeanor, he instinctively relaxed and inwardly cursed himself.
The agitation in his blood was clouding his mind, and he’d failed to notice an ordinary person approaching within a dozen meters of him.
But in the next instant, the bird that had been knocked down suddenly thrashed on the ground, lunging toward the nearby middle-aged man.
"Watch out!"
Yuan Guanghai growled and prepared to intervene. Unexpectedly, the middle-aged man sprang forth with astonishing speed, reaching the bird’s side in an instant.
Instead of the anticipated attack, the two figures collided, and the middle-aged man let out a cheerful laugh.
"Finally found you! Didn’t I tell you not to wander off? Why won’t you ever listen?"
Only then did Yuan Guanghai notice the abnormalities on the man’s body. While his upper half was still human, his lower half had transformed into a lengthy, snake-like tail adorned with tightly aligned gray-brown scales and markings.
This startling juxtaposition of the man’s earnest and even simple smile with his grotesque appearance sent a chill through Yuan Guanghai’s heart.
He could sense no energy signature typical of monsters on this individual—the feeling he got from the man was purely human.
But how could a human possess a snake tail?
"Honey, let’s go."
The middle-aged man hugged the monstrous bird by its neck, seemingly oblivious to its eerie nature. His lips held a warm smile, and he didn’t spare Roger or Yuan Guanghai a single glance.
Yuan Guanghai was about to speak but was stopped by Roger’s wave of the hand.
Though Yuan Guanghai didn’t sense anything unusual, Roger, having endured the events in the desert and learned related truths, immediately connected the dots.
Amid the faint energy traces of the Land of Eternal Darkness lingering around those two, Roger also perceived something altogether different.
No time to debate. Propelled by explosive force, Roger shot upward, each step pounding the ground like thunder as he accelerated toward the distant Qinglu Mountain.
The Funiu Sword Pavilion was not far from here.
Advancing further, the surrounding transformations unfolded before his eyes. Roger encountered many more beings similar to the earlier two along the way.
Half-human, half-monster hybrids, their transformations were still ongoing. The chaos had permeated villages, towns, and cities without exception.
A heavy weight sank into Roger’s chest: not a single disciple of the Sword Pavilion could be found along the way.
Finally, passing beyond the suffocating gray fog that encapsulated the area, Roger scaled a mountain, and the scene in the distance revealed itself to him.
Though the city structures remained standing, the formerly bustling streets were completely packed with people.
Yes, packed—and not figurative.
Truly packed to an incomprehensible degree.
Like stuffing twice the volume of earthworms into a jar.
Twisted, grotesque bodies pressed tightly against one another.
No hostility or aggression—each seemed lost in their transformation, stripped of their ability to judge or think.
In the far-off distance, Roger witnessed an apocalyptic tableau.
The once-majestic Qinglu Mountain had crumbled; jagged fissures scarred its slopes, and its mightiest peaks had completely vanished. The verdant greenery that had blanketed Yamano was replaced by an all-consuming blood energy.
"What happened?"
Yuan Guanghai trembled profoundly. Born and raised here, his memories of Qinglu Mountain and its surrounding peaks were countless. Even at the cost of his life, his attachment to this place was immeasurable.
And yet, now, everything was gone.
