Chapter 448 - 18. Run fast

Chapter 448: 18. Run fast

Time on the island passed quickly; it seemed like only a few blinks of an eye before the sky dimmed and the star-studded night easily enveloped the island, making the already ominous daytime environment even gloomier.

Alagina and Pahetz hadn’t found any meat on the island, but there was an abundance of fruit on the trees; they had gathered enough to fill about five or six boats, which should suffice until the Iceberg Queen reached the next supply point.

As for meat, they could only fish in the sea. It was said that the Iceberg Queen had fishing nets, so tomorrow when it was light, Fisher would go and fish.

The Lion-man Species Philis had worked tirelessly half the day, retrieving a hoard of treasures on the beach behind her, while Pahetz and the others occasionally brought some to add to the pile as a gesture of absolute fairness, not hiding any treasures, waiting to share them when they were done.

The not-so-smart Philis actually believed that the accumulation of treasures behind her was the result of their teamwork, although most of it was dug up by her alone, but as long as she was happy, the atmosphere here was quite harmonious.

As good as things were with Philis and Pahetz, the atmosphere at Valentina’s location was just as bad, naturally because of that damned Ice Scroll.

The conditions on the island were incredibly rudimentary. Originally, Valentina planned to take the scroll back to the Northern Realm before opening it, as her family had a huge, immovable Space Relic that could safely extract the scroll.

But now the problem was that the scroll couldn’t be taken off the island, and trying to extract and read its contents under these primitive conditions proved difficult.

"I mean, aren’t you a Mage? Didn’t you say that this was magic set by the Phoenix Species? Then why not just cancel the magic Emblem on it using magical logic?"

"Sizz... I never said it was magic, just that it’s similar to the principle of magical fluctuations."

"So why can’t we handle it with magical theory?"

"Sizz... I can’t."

"Your mom..."

Balzac covered his face; normally, with his temper, he would’ve wanted to swear, but he turned his head and saw Helldor’s hands growing a lot of gray feathers and shut up.

Although Helldor was made entirely of steam machinery for some reason, he generally had a good temper. Unlike Philis, he wasn’t illiterate, so Balzac got along quite well with him in the team, although they hardly interacted on a daily basis.

"Hey, steam man, we’re almost out of spare arms to replace for you; if you grow feathers again, you’ll have to try using your feet for research... I’ll help you attach your feet to your hands."

Behind them, Celti, seeing all the steam machinery he finally managed to build turned into feather dusters, spit out the malt lollipop he had been chewing in exasperation, and looked impatiently at the two squatting on the ground studying the Ice Scroll.

"Let’s take a break first, eat dinner, then we can always continue the research later," he said.

"Ah, thanks, Heidlin. What’s for dinner tonight?"

The woman known as "Heidlin", the elder sister with the big chest, smiled kindly, glanced at the plate in her hand, and said,

"It’s fish soup and barley bread, dipping them together tastes really good... huh, why hasn’t Philis come back yet?"

"That darn Lion-man got lost in her greed for treasure; she probably hasn’t noticed we left, let alone feel hungry."

"Alright, the young lady has already eaten; I’ll leave her portion separately, you guys enjoy your meal slowly."

Sitting behind in her wheelchair, Valentina watched this scene and sighed with some headaches.

At this rate, who knows when they would be able to open the scroll to see its contents.

Valentina always liked to prepare in advance. She had prepared thoroughly when searching for the scroll, but she hadn’t expected to be tripped up here, unable to take the object away from anyone but the Phoenix Species.

As she rubbed her temples feeling uncomfortable, she suddenly thought of something and turned her head toward the distant jungle.

There, a gentleman from Nali was still resting his leg on the trunk, drawing and writing something on it with a stick, her keen sense that he was also monitoring the progress on their side.

More importantly, he wanted to know the secrets hidden inside the scroll... so, could it be possible that he also had some knowledge about the scroll and knew another method to break the curse and extract information from it?

Valentina’s silvery eyes flickered a few times, and her pale fingers pushed the joystick on her steam wheelchair towards the direction of the shrubs.

Everyone noticed their boss’ movement and looked towards the jungle, catching sight of Fisher sitting among the trees.

"Is that man still spying?"

"Sizz... That man has decent magical prowess; my Gravity Magic didn’t trap him and he even found the remote casting link. His level of magic is much higher than mine; he might have a way to break the scroll’s curse."
