Chapter 446: 17. The Secret of Rank (Two in One)_3
"As the term implies, ’Reproduction Rank’ indicates the possibility for creatures to produce offspring. The greater the difference in rank, the smaller the likelihood of reproducing. Most of the order in Reproduction Rank is similar to that of ’Guardian Rank,’ with only a few exceptions. That’s because Guardian Rank represents the average abilities of individuals within a species. The higher the rank, the more exaggerated their abilities become. So, in general, I just need to explain the meaning of Guardian Rank to you."
"As for ’Relationship Rank,’ well, that has no reference value nowadays, though each human tribe is different. It is ordered according to the closeness of the relationship other races have with the tribe—the higher the rank, the worse the relationship."
Emhardt, floating in midair, had finished searching through all the knowledge he’d recorded. Then, he looked at Fisher before him and said,
"Taking the average rank of humans as the base, Guardian Rank increases from Rank 0 to Rank 20 in sequence."
"Individuals from Rank 0 to Rank 5 generally don’t possess any special abilities; they only differ in physical strength and constitution. Hence, they are called the ’Humanoid Rank.’ Even so, without external forces, even if humans were to train all their lives, they could only reach around Rank 2 to Rank 3 at most."
"From Rank 6 to Rank 14, we’ve already moved beyond the abilities of humans. Whether it’s in terms of abilities, constitution, or the probability of reproduction, there is a clear distinction from humans, and this range is known as the ’Extraordinary Rank.’ Species like the Dragon-man, Phoenix, and Whale-man have an average rank falling within this zone."
"As for races beyond Rank 15... well, they are so wondrous that they would be recorded in myths if ever spotted by humans, thus they are called the ’Mythical Rank.’ However, they are incredibly rare, and now they have practically all vanished without a trace. The Chaos Species are among those in this range."
"And I must remind you, if you see stone tablets recorded by ancient humans or anything of the sort, they would generally draw the race next to the rank. Don’t be fooled by the depicted races! Each individual’s rank is different; those fools only drew them to indicate the approximate position of that race, and every human tribe has a different Warning Tablet!"
Emhardt spoke somewhat earnestly, seemingly having suffered a great deal over this, even his one-eyed, one-mouthed book-cover appeared to be sour,
"I don’t know which dumbass human tribe recorded Little Demons and Demon Servants as part of the Demon Species on a stele. Before I sneaked into the Demon Abyss to steal books, I thought all within were Little Demons of the Humanoid Rank and Demon Servants of the Extraordinary Rank. But once I went in, they were all Mythical Rank Demons, and I even got caught red-handed by the most ferocious bunch..."
While listening to Emhardt’s introduction, Fisher’s thoughts quickly aligned with the content on the stele he had seen at the sea floor. It seemed that the stone tablet had a total of 20 horizontal lines representing rank, with the line based on humans as one of them. Therefore, arranged in ascending order, their power would also increase accordingly.
The ancient human concept of classification was easy to understand. Since this rank was named ’Guardian Rank,’ it meant that humans used it to assess the risk other species posed to themselves. It was a tool created by ancient humans to seek benefits and avoid harms, somewhat akin to mathematics, a concept not recognized by other species.
Thinking this way, if Erwin mentioned that Elliog was at the Eighteenth Rank, did that mean Elliog was a Great Demon of the Mythical Rank? No wonder when I contracted Elliog, the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual issued a warning to me for the first time, even though it had never done so when making contracts with Rafael and Moli, the two Doomsday beings...
And now that he heard the ancient human method of ranking, Fisher suddenly recalled a very familiar concept: human-used Magic.
Previously mentioned, Magic was differentiated by Magic Ring Count; Six Ring and below was termed ’Low Ring Magic,’ while upward from Six Ring could be called ’High Ring Magic,’ but the highest existing Magic Ring Count was only Fourteen Ring.
If Magic Ring Count corresponded with rank, Magic would just reach the gates of the Mythical Rank, fully covering all life within the Humanoid and the Transcendent Ranks!
So, was it possible that Magic, a wondrous tool, was created to compensate for the shortfall of humans in the Life Rank?
This peculiar thought suddenly burst forth, and Fisher’s mind was instantly filled with the image of the All Things Warning Stone Tablet he had seen at the sea floor. At the bottom of the tablet, a human lay prostrate on the ground, devoutly raising his hands above his head as if receiving some form of blessing...
This made Fisher deeply question the history of Magic he had learned before because he suddenly felt that the Magic currently used by humans was very likely not created by themselves but might have been bestowed by another. As for who bestowed it?
That day, the lofty yet immensely compassionate gaze from above the towering stele at the sea floor suddenly invaded Fisher’s thoughts...
Fisher was a bit stunned, muttering a term under his breath,
"Mother Goddess?"
"Mother Goddess? What Mother Goddess? Have you lost your mind?"
"No... I’m just pondering some things."
Upon hearing Emhardt’s query, he shook his head, tucking the thoughts that had sprung a second ago deep within his heart.
