Chapter 406: 160. Unprecedented and Unmatched_3
It had already dawned.
All the crew looked at the sunrise, flooded with warm rays of sunlight that spread an unknown sense of hope, even Pahetz was stunned by the sun for a second or two before she realized and laughed and cursed at the back-talking crew,
"Then get lost and go wash up, eat breakfast, and get to work!"
"Clean the deck! Start the engines! Raise the flag!"
"A new adventure awaits us!"
...
The nascent sun severed the cold dome of the sky, lighting up half the heavens of Saint Nali, but even hotter than the sunlight was the atmosphere in front of the Golden Palace.
In front of the square of the Golden Palace, where it was still dark, myriads of masses had already gathered, jostling forward as if afraid to be a step behind.
Although the grand doors of the gallery above the Golden Palace remained tightly closed, it did not stop them from scrambling for a prime spot to wait for the grand ceremony that would take place in a while.
A big incident had occurred in the Golden Palace a few days prior. Prince Lunxis had conspired with Blake, a shareholder of the exploration company, to assassinate Prince Dexter, throwing Saint Nali into great turmoil. The public’s disappointment in the New Party and their heightened perception of the exploration company had undergone a change, at the same time falling into the most distrustful phase of the officialdom since the exploration fever began.
Various discussions and differing opinions and debates filled the newspapers, playing out every day.
But while everyone was at a loss, Princess Elizabeth took decisive action to rectify the failure.
With the consecutive deaths of both princes, there were only two underage young princes left in the entire Golden Palace. Compared to the two princes who were not yet of age, the people could no longer contain their rage and for two consecutive days in front of the Golden Palace, demanded the Council to recognize Princess Elizabeth to succeed as the next Queen.
This breaking of tradition for a female succession to the throne was finally included in the Council’s decision-making process. It was voted on collectively by representatives of the public, the Griffin Party, and other minor parties. With a total of 460 seats in the Council, the Griffin Party unanimously approved and the New Party mostly approved, reaching a consensus.
And at this very moment inside the Golden Palace, Elizabeth stood expressionless in front of a tall standing mirror, while many maids from within the Golden Palace anxiously surrounded her, dressing her in a golden queenship garment.
The coronation attire traditionally used by the Kings of Nali only came in male styles, but for Elizabeth’s ascension, Nali’s designers worked frantically overnight and finally produced a formal piece of attire.
As per Elizabeth’s request, the garment was neat without being bulky, restrained without being luxurious — a perfect interpretation of an Empress.
With the last Golden Crown placed upon Elizabeth’s head, she slowly opened her hollow golden eyes.
"Your Majesty, the leader of the New Party, the leader of the Griffin Party, the chief of the Hidden Affairs Bureau, and the representatives from the Magic Association and the Church have all arrived at the Golden Palace and are now seated..."
"Call Madillon in."
"Yes."
In fact, according to the rules, before the Emperor of Nali was crowned, no subject was to enter the Golden Palace, but Elizabeth did not care much for rules. If you wanted to talk to her about rules, she’d have your head picked off and get someone else who didn’t bother with rules to do her bidding.
As the maid from the inner palace exited the spacious dressing chamber, Elizabeth gently waved to dismiss the many maids bowing their heads beside her, picked up her Golden Scepter and the long dress, and stepped out of the room.
She walked through the wide corridors inside the Golden Palace, passing by one stone-faced Guard after another, and made her way alone in front of the room before the coronation platform.
The coronation platform was above the main gate of the Golden Palace. According to tradition, the new Nali Emperor had to walk through that door alone and then show himself before the many citizens, declaring to his subjects that he had taken over the throne from his forefathers, and vowed to protect with his life the safety and development of Nali’s children.
Normally, there would be many etiquette officers here, but at this moment, Elizabeth was alone.
It was here that she had killed her own brother Dexter. Although the carpet had been changed once by those inside the Golden Palace, Elizabeth did not actually mind if they had kept that trophy-like item, but since they had already switched it out without telling her and processed Dexter’s corpse a bit, she let it be.
She sat indifferently on the only chair in the room; it wasn’t long before the sound of hurried footsteps came from behind, and then, there was a knock on the door,
"Knock, knock..."
"Your Majesty, Mr. Madillon, leader of the New Party, has arrived."
"Let him in."
Madillon’s elderly frame struggled to push open the huge door, he cautiously glanced at the room’s decor, only to find it was spotless, with nothing inside but Elizabeth seated in the center with her back to him.
But whether it was an illusion or not, his nose kept picking up a faint scent of blood, and the more he stepped into the room, the stronger the stench became.
Elizabeth did not turn around but merely beckoned him with a slight curl of her hand, that simple gesture making Madillon involuntarily swallow his saliva, as if what sat before him was not an about-to-be-crowned emperor, but a terrifying monster.
