Chapter 318: 129. Kindness is weak
On the pitch-black Snake Head Street, Elizabeth gently helped Fisher onto her gold carriage, while Old Jack and Karma remained in the tavern without coming out.
They really owed Old Jack a word of thanks this time. If it weren’t for him, at his advanced age, taking a shotgun to stop the assault of the Human Worms, Fisher and Moli might not have made it until Elizabeth’s royal guards arrived.
In fact, when it came to fighting, Moli was certainly more than capable, but as had been said before, as long as the conscious Fisher wasn’t beside her to watch over her, her inner turmoil became so severe she was helpless, as if she had never undergone any training at all, merely cowering with her head in her hands.
Elizabeth glanced at Moli at the carriage door, then silently stepped aside to let her enter, which surprised Moli so much she hurriedly whispered her thanks,
"Thank... thank you, Princess."
She hadn’t expected Elizabeth to let her board the carriage, and although the gesture was not friendly, Moli, who had seen her and Renie’s high-level battles, knew Elizabeth was being quite restrained.
Hearing Moli’s thanks, Elizabeth didn’t respond; without any other action, she sat down next to Fisher. This caused Moli, who had originally wanted to sit beside Fisher, to reluctantly take a seat opposite him.
Elizabeth poured a glass of water for Fisher and then signaled for the carriage to start moving. Elizabeth had wanted to say something, but seeing Fisher’s contemplative expression, she knew he was still pondering the exact location of the treasure vault.
She turned her head to look at Moli before her and suddenly spoke,
"Isabella and Milica miss you very much. Although I don’t know how you managed to infiltrate Saint Nali University, as I have said before, there are far too many security lapses at Saint Nali University..."
Elizabeth propped her face in her hands, quietly scrutinizing the features of the merfolk girl before her, her serene and undisturbed gaze chilling Moli. Yet, when Isabella and Milica were mentioned, Moli pursed her lips tightly and had to force out a soft whisper,
"I... I just came ashore to look for my aunt, who’s been away from the ocean for a long time. I definitely have no ill will towards humans; on the contrary... I really like humans."
When speaking about liking humans, she covertly glanced at Fisher but quickly withdrew her gaze, fearing Elizabeth might notice.
"Is that so..."
Elizabeth’s gaze had already moved to the front of the carriage. Her fair and slender hands rested on the table inside, her fingernails neatly trimmed. If one looked closely, they could see the callouses on her palms formed from years holding a sword.
Fisher was fully immersed in thought, as he extracted the clues hidden within the riddle. A place name suddenly emerged in his mind, brightening his gaze as if he had arrived at the answer to the riddle.
"I..."
"Thud!"
Just as Fisher was about to speak, the entire carriage came to a sudden halt. As the compartment swayed slightly, Elizabeth’s expression darkened, and the soldiers outside simultaneously called out sternly,
"Who goes there! Who dares to impede the Princess’s carriage?"
"Terribly sorry to disturb Princess Elizabeth, we are from the Hidden Affairs Bureau, directly under the Royal Family. I am Secretary-General Tommy, and this is my work ID..."
Inside the carriage, Fisher and Elizabeth exchanged glances. It was Elizabeth who first spoke softly to Fisher,
"Don’t talk, I’ll go out and check."
Fisher’s expression also turned serious as he gently opened the curtain of the carriage slightly, revealing the profound moonlight outside, making the conversation from outside clearer.
The Hidden Affairs Bureau actually consisted of two specific departments: the General Affairs Bureau that managed ordinary matters and the Royal Direct Affairs Department in charge of supervising the Royal Family and nobles.
Nali’s law granted the Gedelin family powers beyond the ordinary, but that did not mean they could do as they pleased within the kingdom’s borders. Should they commit a crime, it would be handled by the Royal Direct Affairs Department of the Hidden Affairs Bureau, and issues like those involving Lunxis would be transferred to this department for further investigation.
At this moment, their approaching Elizabeth made her quite puzzled, so she carefully instructed Fisher to stay on the carriage.
Elizabeth straightened her dress and then stepped off the carriage to be greeted by a group of civil servants dressed in black suits.
The leader, a middle-aged man, smiled slightly and said to Elizabeth in a light chuckle,
"Apologies, Princess, both heads of the Hidden Affairs Bureau are on official trips today, which you are aware of. However, our visit today isn’t really related to Your Highness..."
Toward the end, he casually pointed at the carriage before him and added,
"We have to inquire if Mr. Fisher Benavides is inside this carriage? The Hidden Affairs Bureau has received an anonymous report, accusing Mr. Fisher Benavides, who has recently resigned from Saint Nali University, of harboring suspects involved in an attack on the Schwali Delegation. May we ask Mr. Fisher to accompany us for an investigation?"
"Of course, we understand that Mr. Fisher is likely innocent and are also aware of his relationship with your highness. We assure you that we will not use any interrogation methods outside the due process to uphold the integrity of the law enforcement."
