Chapter 284: 118. Elizabeth’s Courtyard_2
Hearing her older brother’s words, Elizabeth smiled and shook her head, her golden eyes gazing toward the frolicking pet dogs in the distance.
From atop the hill, their barking carried far and wide, creating a background noise that was a bit too loud. So Elizabeth gently waved her hand, and the dogs immediately ceased their roughhousing, obediently running back to sit beside her, heads raised and tongues lolling.
Dexter was genuinely surprised by this scene. It was the first time he had seen dogs trained to be so obedient. He rarely spoke with his sister on any regular day, let alone visited her in the Western-style mansion. The only time he had come by was when he had first been allocated his private land. If not for a matter of importance this time, he probably wouldn’t have found the time to come over.
"They are well-trained, how did you manage that?"
"Puppies have simple minds and a strong inclination to obey. Over time, they just learned to understand my commands. Later on, you might want to get some for yourself... But let’s not talk about that. Are you here because of the Lunxis issue?"
"Ah, since Fisher has already talked to you about it, it makes things easier..."
Dexter looked at the group of dogs sitting content with tongues out and a smile in their eyes, his gaze flickering as he spoke,
"I need to use the military for the charity dinner this weekend. Lunxis has gone too far, and it’s time for a lesson. Plus, he’s backed by Blake, even if he’s a friend of Father’s, I must teach him a lesson... I am going to raid the Healing Room."
Elizabeth waved her hand and the group of dogs obediently ran back to their kennels beside the Western-style mansion. She didn’t let Dexter wait too long and agreed almost immediately,
"Okay, I will dispatch soldiers to the Healing Room. But brother, about Father..."
As previously mentioned, the demi-human that Lunxis and Blake were jointly seeking was not solely for their own benefit. Behind Lunxis was Gedelin IX, bedridden and nearing the end of his days—a fact known to everyone in the Golden Palace. Thus, the purpose of his search for the demi-human was quite obvious.
Humans sometimes rise up against what seems inevitable, filled with a courage worthy of praise, much like fighting against an unjust fate. But the cycle of life and death, even one’s own children sometimes cannot understand nor support.
Dexter smiled helplessly and said to Elizabeth,
"Father has grown old, and it’s natural to be confused in the face of life and death. We can’t be too demanding. Consider this an act of whimsy on my part as a Prince. I believe Father will understand."
Elizabeth’s golden eyes looked at her older brother and after a second or two, she nodded in agreement and replied,
"In that case, I understand... It seems that after this matter, the dust will settle, and it is time for me to let go and rest, to pursue the life that belongs to me. I’ve been preoccupied with various matters over the years, constrained by emotions and life. After you become King, Fisher’s and my matters should indeed be put on the agenda."
Dexter’s eyes brightened slightly upon hearing Elizabeth’s words. How could he not understand her intentions?
Elizabeth was granted the power over the Nali Army by her Father, and while several measures had been put in place to supervise and restrict her power to reassure Dexter, the future heir, there’s a saying that fits well here: nothing is quite as reassuring as holding power in one’s own hands, is it?
And Elizabeth’s tone was relaxed, clearly not wishing to make things difficult for Dexter. He certainly understood what she meant.
Elizabeth had held her position for six years, now readily handing over authority and stepping back; her contributions to Nali and the Royal Family could not be erased. Kind-hearted Dexter would never treat his sister, who had been considerate of him, poorly.
Reflecting on this, Dexter replied to Elizabeth with a generous demeanor,
"Good, having you to support me is my fortune... This is it: your and Fisher’s matter is settled, Father’s situation will be concluded in these few months. November is a month suitable for the Royal Family’s marriage; I will order him to wed you late in November, how about that?"
Elizabeth’s eyebrows raised slightly. Clearly, she hadn’t expected her brother to take a forceful hand in arranging a marriage so favorable to his sister; her brother’s assertive approach to this match made Elizabeth shake her head with a smile. But after thinking for a second, she declined,
"Let it be, brother. I will handle it myself..."
Dexter frowned, puzzled as to why Elizabeth would hesitate over such a matter.
She and Fisher had dragged on for so long. At thirty-four, he already had three children, all daughters, but he was still able to have more!
Then there was his sister, nearing twenty-nine, still entangled with Fisher, to an outsider it might look like some kind of tragic drama...
"Elizabeth, don’t take offense at my straightforwardness, it’s for your own good. You’re almost twenty-nine, and Fisher... to put it bluntly, he’s the most eligible bachelor in Saint Nali, and not just because every aspect of his condition is very good. I don’t think he’s just a good, honest man..."
Elizabeth rested her chin in her hand and gestured for Dexter to continue,
"Look how he’s been well behaved and chaste all these years, isn’t it just because you’re in Saint Nali? Without you watching over him, I bet he’d have a Lady by his pillow every night and become a regular at the Pink Hall... Or maybe, like me and many men in Nali, they need the bonds of family and responsibility."
