Chapter 256: Anna

When Fisher emerged from the café, it was nearly half past eight, over twenty minutes past the time he’d agreed to meet Anna.

Time spent with Elizabeth in the café felt like it had flown by, though he felt as if only five minutes had passed.

After leaving, he hurriedly boarded a carriage headed for the Miao Cemetery where he and Anna had arranged to meet.

Upon hearing Fisher’s destination, the coachman opened the small carriage window specifically to get a good look at him, and only after confirming that he was a living person did he slowly start the carriage,

"Now going to the Miao Cemetery will cost an extra 20 euros..."

Inside the carriage, Fisher couldn’t help but smile wryly as he heard the coachman’s remark. Stories of the night and cemeteries always led to wild imaginings, including a vampire tale that once set Nali City ablaze. It was so sensational that residents stocked up on Holy Water from the Church, fearing a day when an unstoppable vampire creature might appear in their homes.

Fisher agreed to the additional fee – he needed to get there quickly. More than half an hour late, he worried Anna might have thought he stood her up and left.

The Miao Cemetery was located on the outskirts of the city, in a direction opposite to Saint Nali University, nestled near woods wrapped in the cloak of night, just a short distance from leaving Saint Nali City.

The entire cemetery was enclosed within a fence, sprawling in size, because the people of Saint Nali who didn’t own their land would bury their departed loved ones in this communal graveyard.

At this moment, looking out from the carriage, the variously sized tombstones stood quietly, watching the passersby, like tall ghosts standing sentinel.

There were no lights inside the cemetery, and it was uncommon for anyone to visit at night.

A chill breeze swept through, rustling the leaves on the trees and bringing with it a bone-chilling, sinister atmosphere.

Fisher had just descended from the carriage when the coachman behind him lightly flicked his whip, leaving the place without hesitation, showing no concern for how Fisher might return to the city.

Looking at the silent cemetery ahead, Fisher wasn’t sure if there were any ambushes laid out, so he preemptively stood his Handcane upright, ready to release a spell.

As the Magic Emblem glistened, an imperceptible wave gently spread out, lightly colliding with the cemetery before him.

Opening his eyes, Fisher watched as the wave passed through the fence and tombstones and reverberated off living beings, sending back a wave.

Four-Ring Magic, "Horizon Microwave."

This spell emitted microwaves that resonated with life, with the returning quantity and oscillation amplitude indicative of the number and size of living entities within. It was magic Fisher had inscribed in his Handcane ahead of time to prevent an ambush by Anna, and he also had a dozen inscribed Magic Poker cards in his pocket.

The returning waves indicated only two humanoid beings; no other large creatures were present.

One was the Tomb Guardian at the far end of the cemetery, and the other was in the center, likely Anna.

Fisher retracted his Handcane, reassured, without illuminating any light, and quietly moved toward that humanoid shape.

The cemetery was very quiet. Fisher quickly reached the spot he had reconnoitered, and in the moonlight, he saw a lady kneeling quietly in front of a tombstone.

The lady, dressed in a black robe and exquisitely beautiful, was none other than Anna from the Pink Hall.

He didn’t speak first but rather took a moment to observe the tombstone she was facing. It bore some inscriptions and some offerings only used by those devoted to the Mother Goddess, mostly comprised of flowers, along with a small bottle of Holy Water with its cap opened.

The tradition of the Church’s priests held that the Holy Water represented the living’s remembrance of the deceased; full of reminiscence, only then could the water communicate with the soul that had long departed this world.

She knelt there silently, eyes closed, hands devoutly gesturing in prayer toward the tombstone.

After observing her for a while, Fisher used his Handcane to light a faint glow and walked softly to her side, peering at the tombstone she prayed in front of.

The tombstone carried many names unlike those of West Continent people, names probably belonging to Humans from the South Continent.

Haturu Lu, Skodali Lu, Amash Lu...

There were many names. The tombstone, apart from the common restful words "May you rest in peace" inscribed by the Church, was filled only with a long string of those names, leaving no room for anything else.

Now, drawing closer, Fisher noticed a chisel lying at her feet and many chips of stone beside the tombstone – she had evidently just been carving something.

So Fisher looked down, using the light from his Handcane, and swiftly spotted the newly added name at the bottom,

Kajie Lu.

"This is the family or friends of a tribe from the South Continent, isn’t it?" he asked softly, looking over the row of identical surnames.

Anna, brought back from her prayers to the realm of reality by his question, quietly gazed at the tombstone and spoke,

"I was tightly bound by that scum for many years, struggling for a long time, finally sneaking in this corner of the cemetery to buy this tombstone to let them rest for a while, also to record their numerous names... It’s been so long, and there are so many of them, I feared I would forget their names, so I inscribed them this way first."

"Before I leave the Western Continent, I intend to smash this tombstone and then take them home with me. That was the promise I made to them."
