Chapter 228: 97. The Bet with Oneself
For the following several days, Fisher essentially had nothing to do, as the academic conference was nearly over.
Early this morning, the Golden Palace had someone deliver an invitation to Prince Schwali, inviting them to be guests within the Golden Palace.
The person who came held no minor position; it was Prince Lunxis, Gedelin IX’s second son.
Fisher caught a glimpse of him from afar. The prince, having inherited the excellent Gedelin bloodline, was quite handsome, though his complexion was somewhat pale, sharing an uncanny resemblance with Trandell’s pallor. It was unclear whether it was due to ill health or kidney overexertion, but next to the ruddy-faced Luosang, he appeared rather frail.
Donning formal attire, he presented the invitation to Prince Schwali, and in front of a public gathering, Prince Luosang accepted the Golden Palace’s invitation. Afterwards, the two princes shook hands, camera flashes from the media followed...
Fisher was familiar with the ritual but didn’t pay much attention to the matter.
What really caught Fisher’s attention was that since Prince Luosang was now invited to the Golden Palace, it also indicated that Princess Elizabeth, who had been out inspecting the military, would soon be returning, likely arriving in Saint Nali by tonight.
During the day, Fisher met with Trandell in the city and asked for his assistance with two matters.
The first was to enlist the New Party’s power to help investigate the details behind the "Healing Room." Fisher had only heard the name from Milica before and thought it was merely a beauty establishment for Saint Nali’s ladies of leisure, but since Moli’s aunt had sent the box back, it meant that it wasn’t so simple after all.
According to Moli, the box originally contained some human candies, meant for Moli to eat, which, of course, had all made their way into Moli’s tummy by now, and there was nothing particularly special about the contents.
But since it was related to Mu Xi, Fisher thought it best to have someone inside the New Party get information in advance.
The second matter requiring Trandell’s help: Fisher gave him all the Gold Bai Mu had given him last night. The New Party had specialized channels for laundering... oh no, for liquidating such items, providing more Naliou than the usual market prices. As for the jewellery, Fisher kept it for himself.
The designs were not quite to human tastes and probably wouldn’t fetch much Gold, so it was better to keep all of them as gifts for Renie.
The benefits obtainable from within the New Party far surpassed the purity and strength of your will. Often, those entering the party with pure faith would find themselves thoroughly corrupted in a few months. It’s not that their principles were weak, but that the rewards were so abundant; there was always something that could easily break your resolve.
Therefore, most New Party Members now had the air of sanctimonious hypocrites... Trandell excluded, since he was already nearly corrupted before joining the New Party and even made quite a few strides after joining, at least incorporating "the welfare of the Nali people" into his political agenda, which really was commendable.
As for not asking Trandell for help in selling Gold for Moli before, it was because the New Party needed his help now and thus was willing to accommodate; otherwise, the internal channels were not so readily available to free agents like Fisher.
Having instructed Trandell on the two matters, Fisher rested for a while in his rented room and also took out the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual to flip through. Upon checking, he discovered he had already surpassed 20% in his biological research on the Whale-man Species.
Ethereal text emerged, reading,
"Whale-man Species Biological Research Progress: 21%"
"Whale-man Species Social Research Progress: 19%"
"Unlocked Rewards: Constitution +2, Deep Diving Physique, Lake Fairy Poem"
The Constitution bonus wasn’t significant, so Fisher didn’t pay much mind, but he examined the subsequent two rewards thoroughly. First up was the literal "Deep Diving Physique,"
"Deep Diving Physique: Enhanced lungs allow you to resist the lack of oxygen and the pressure underwater, and even let you kiss with the Ocean Subhumans freely in the water, very useful~"
Fisher’s face was lined with incredulity, and by now he was no longer surprised by the astonishing comments popping up from the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual. If he hadn’t guessed wrong, surely the author of the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual was an individual full of mischief. He wondered what great misfortune had led him to acquire such a treasure...
However, compared to the other manuals, at least this one recorded no dangerous knowledge.
Fisher glanced at the Soul Completion Manual lying quietly on the side. It was only recently that he realized how deadly the knowledge recorded on it was. Now, Fisher planned to indefinitely seal this manual away; he would neither continue his research nor destroy it.
After all, as Philone had said, as long as a Completion Manual was torn, it would instantly appear in another place in the world, and if it was too far from its owner, it would automatically return to their possession. There was no discarding it, so Fisher could only carry it with him at all times.
As for the last reward...
Fisher examined the ancient-looking Sheepskin Scroll that had appeared in his hands out of nowhere. Opening it, he recognized the handwriting within; it was Nali Language.
It seemed to be penned by someone themselves, hence looking a bit rushed. It read,
"Set forth from here, sing victories here, crowned in triumph here, awaiting your return, here."
