Chapter 214: 92. Sender: Son of the Sea_2
"When to use it, how to use it, it’s all up to the Golden Palace, and that’s something the New Party cannot tolerate. Originally each of the three powers was distinct and separate, but to suddenly find the other two banding together to beat you up and grab your handles for later use?"
"Golden Palace knows about it, but does the Griffin Party know as well? You two are now in bed together."
Fisher suddenly realized something, gently placed down his wine glass, and continued slicing the fish,
"I see, so you want to maximize the chances of avoiding the potentially fatal vulnerabilities that this review by the Golden Palace might expose?"
"...Haha, that’s right."
Trandell rubbed his head and took a bite of the fish, but Fisher ignored him and continued with his guess,
"This review targeting the New Party seems infallible, and the New Party must be the victims, but actually, the party leader of the New Party and its backers must have noticed the issue."
"This examination is led by the Golden Palace, in other words, led by the Royal Family. It seems virtually impossible to alleviate superficially, but in fact, you all know there’s a hidden card to play..."
Sweat began to bead more heavily on Trandell’s forehead, and his complexion grew increasingly guilty.
"There are not many ministers who can be sent by the Royal Family for the review, only those retired yet still not dead. A third-party person, loyal to the Royal Family, would be perfect, and able to influence their decisions are not only Prince Dexter but also another... Princess Elizabeth."
Seeing he could no longer deceive Fisher, Trandell simply raised his hands in surrender,
"Spare me, great professor... Even if we don’t have any major issues, do you think Prince Dexter won’t ask those ministers to find problems? He just wants something to use to threaten the New Party!"
"No one in the New Party will tolerate the Royal Family throwing a bomb that could explode at any moment under their pillows; this is already our approach to minimize losses. If there is no other way, we must choose to break the net with the Griffin Party and the Royal Family..."
Fisher looked at him and asked,
"So is this your party leader’s idea, to send you to find me and get me to reach out to Princess Elizabeth?"
Trandell poured a drink, clearly consenting,
"...Who in all of Nali doesn’t know of your relationship with Princess Elizabeth? You are a free agent, not siding with anyone; even if you meet with Princess Elizabeth every day, no one would suspect... And, you still have a ’universal request’ from Princess Elizabeth that you haven’t used, right?"
"You think I’d help the New Party?"
Fisher stared at Trandell, who shook his head. His face was somewhat flushed from drink, but he explained very clearly,
"It’s not just about helping the New Party, but also helping Princess Elizabeth..."
"Although Princess Elizabeth does not engage in politics, she still has influence over many of the old ministers... You know that she can’t possibly succeed the throne to become King; we both have needs where we can use each other... She helps us this time, and when Prince Dexter ascends the throne, we will politically protect her freedom. You wouldn’t want her to marry another man, right?"
"Of course, if you manage to marry Princess Elizabeth before His Majesty the King passes away, then consider I never came to you... But His Majesty doesn’t have long to live, even if you decide to marry Princess Elizabeth tomorrow, who knows if you’ll make it to the royal wedding date..."
The Royal Family has specific customs for marriage dates; there are only four months a year when marriages can take place, and other times are not allowed.
The nearest royal wedding date is about two months from today, and by that time, it’s possible that Prince Dexter, once he ascends the throne, could turn his back on everyone.
As for why there is no possibility for Princess Elizabeth to ascend the throne, this has to do with the old rules of the Nali Royal Family.
A lady must never succeed to the throne of Nali; it is an ancient iron rule, unless all the sons of the previous King are dead. Princess Elizabeth still has three brothers, so she could never ascend the throne, let alone desire to take it.
So up to today, Nali has never had a reigning Queen.
Now, the situation is just as Trandell analyzed: the New Party faces the risk of a review exposing fatal evidence, and after the old King’s death, Princess Elizabeth also faces the danger of being targeted by her own brother.
But to be more specific, it is the New Party that needs Princess Elizabeth because, so far, the relationships among the princes and princesses are all just speculation.
No one knows whether Dexter truly intends to settle scores with Elizabeth; to take ten thousand steps back, Dexter, after all, is Elizabeth’s blood-related brother and might just want to take back her military power, letting her manage her own marriage to Isabella.
Fisher had never heard Elizabeth speak ill of her elder brother, and their relationship could only be guessed based on the King’s appointment of power.
For Fisher, helping was optional, since for Elizabeth, there wasn’t much to lose.
If her relationship with her brother was bad, then the New Party was a political guarantee of her freedom; if she got along well with her brother, helping the New Party wouldn’t be a disadvantage either...
Thinking this, Fisher suddenly asked Trandell,
"Trandell, what’s the purpose of you being a councilor?"
Trandell was slightly startled and replied subconsciously,
"Uh, making money, drinking fine wine, smoking cigarettes, sleeping with ladies... and bringing welfare to the people of Nali?"
This made Fisher laugh, and he shook his head, commenting,
"If it were someone from the Griffin Party, he would say it is to defend the glory of the Nali Royal Family..."
"Hahaha, you remind me of Principal Damien."
Fisher and Trandell clinked glasses and shared a joke.
Neither the New Party nor the Griffin Party were good birds, but if one had to choose, at least the New Party did "some" things for the people while doing bad things.
Actually, by this point, Fisher had already expressed that he was willing to help, because in reality, the New Party did not need him to make a decision—the real decision-maker about whether to help was Elizabeth.
He only needed to act as an independent third party conveying the intentions of the New Party to Elizabeth. As for the final outcome and the choices she would make, he would respect them all.
"So, your party leader... or whip, whoever, must have promised you some conditions to get me involved, right?"
Fisher stood up, dumped the fish bones into the trash can in the room, and while scraping the sauce with a fork, asked,
"Right, right..."
Trandell rubbed his hands and said, "How about being invited to draft the educational act that the next Council session will decide to establish? By then, the entire educational world will know the great name Fisher Benavides!"
Fisher paused while scraping the plate, then looked at him with incredulity and walked over to him, pushing him towards the door in a manner suggesting he was seeing him out,
"No thanks, see you next time, and thanks for the wine."
"No, no! Father, grandfather, I was wrong!"
While struggling, Trandell held onto the doorknob, refusing to let Fisher open the door to see him out, then with a sly grin, he began,
"That’s the condition laid out by our party leader. See, he doesn’t understand you as well as I do, right? So, I’ve prepared another condition related to what you love most, about the demi-humans!"
"You think demi-humans are what I love most?"
Fisher strictly refused Trandell’s insinuation but still let go of the doorknob, gesturing for him to continue.
Trandell smiled and said,
"Well, it’s a secret known to no one else... Recently, a mysterious person sent a letter to the Golden Palace without a sender. The letter made its way directly to the table of Prince Dexter in the Golden Palace, magical, right? The Royal Family can’t even trace who sent this letter."
"But the gist of the letter was to celebrate someone’s 34th birthday! Prince Dexter turns thirty-four this year, and guess what the signature on the letter was?"
Fisher frowned, seemingly with an idea reverberating in his mind. Knowing he was deep in thought, Trandell excitedly continued,
"It read, ’Sender: Son of the Sea’! That’s a demi-human from the ocean, apparently having a connection with Prince Dexter!"
