Chapter 175: 76. Casheo’s Silver Mirror

The vast meeting room was filled with the quiet sound of a swinging pendulum, as every evening following the meetings, Saint Nali University arranged dinners of varying scales, so at this moment, their families were also waiting below in the banquet hall for the meeting upstairs to end.

Moli sat next to Mr. Fisher and opened her notebook with a "heave-ho" sound, then glanced at both sides. The Forbidden Magic Scholars opposite were rubbing their hands together eagerly, clearly having plotted carefully, while on Mr. Fisher’s side, apart from him and herself, there were only a few teachers from the Magic Academy, Roger and Selena.

Since the theory was proposed by Mr. Fisher, the two professors came only to support Saint Nali University’s presence, to prevent an outnumbered situation from occurring.

Seeing Professor Fisher’s composed expression, Moli also gently patted her own cheek, trying to match Professor Fisher’s calmness in order to not lose in momentum to the others.

But because the patting was a bit loud, it made Mr. Fisher and Roger look over at the same time, unsure if this student was having a spasm or doing something else for suddenly hitting her own face.

Well, that was just great, she hadn’t been unsettled by the Schwali scholars, but the gazes of her own professors made her blush, her head lowered as if afraid of their questions.

Fortunately, Professor Fisher seemed to have gotten used to it, he didn’t pay attention to Moli who made silly gestures, but spread out his notes, preparing for the following debate with them.

In strict terms, an academic forum wouldn’t have a rigorous format, essentially everyone presenting their own ideas as if in a conversation. However, since there were many people from Schwali this time and Mr. Fisher was the only one on his side, Principal Ken and Prince Luosang sitting at the front were there to maintain order to prevent the debate from descending into chaos.

The scholars from Schwali needed to put forth their arguments one by one, and then Mr. Fisher would respond.

Actually, this type of debate in an academic forum didn’t need to convince the scholars from Schwali. Whether they were convinced or not, Mr. Fisher only needed to present his answers and explanations and then wait for the meeting notetakers to record the conversation and convey the results to the people waiting outside.

"The meeting will now commence."

Principal Ken coughed and gestured with his eyes to the notetaker on the side. There were two notetakers, one from Schwali and one from Nali, each using their distinct scripts to record the proceedings.

"Schwali scholar group, argument one."

As Principal Ken looked in the direction of the Schwali scholars, one on the left stood up, lifted his monocle nestled beneath his eye, and addressing Mr. Fisher said,

"In his paper, Mr. Fisher chose a method of proof that involved using a so-called ’soul’ as the Ring Head of a universal spell to prove the existence of the soul. After our side’s experimentation, I wonder, is there a possibility that Mr. Fisher’s magic’s Ring Head is not actually a soul, but instead points to a ’Magic Circuit’?"

Principal Ken then looked toward Mr. Fisher, waited for the scholar to sit down, then Mr. Fisher stood up and tore a sheet from his notebook,

"Alright. Let us then change the magic we are using for proof. First, we switch the Ring Head from [Soul] to [Source], then we write the Main Ring’s structure as [Magic Power] with [Object Designation]..."

Mr. Fisher held the pen, stacking the Main Ring’s structure in a peculiar linking manner, which would rule out other sources of Magic Power and lock the Ring Head’s Source to one person. This method, if following human traditions of constructing magic, would not be possible—the inspiration, in fact, came from Demon spells.

By turning the structured Order into Chaos, he helped himself lock onto a single source of Magic Power from the complexity of the world.

Although this particular method was of little use in normal circumstances, it served a purpose in proving theoretical concepts, since the Main Ring was completely filled by object-targeting effects, attaching additional effects would make the Main Ring very cumbersome, using a lot of Magic Power with poor results.

After the spell was written, Mr. Fisher handed the paper to the scholar who had asked the question. As he activated the Magic Emblem, he felt that all his Magic Circuits were illuminated.

"While there is no magic with [Magic Circuit] as the Ring Head, the method of elimination and lock-in can simulate such magic. You will find that it feels completely different from the soul magic I designed, which points to a different object hidden inside the body, covering both Magic Circuits and other entities."

The scholar furrowed his brows, pondering as he bowed to Mr. Fisher and sat down.

Principal Ken straightened his elegant beard, then rang the small bell, and the notetaker approached where the scholar had been seated, quickly documenting the Magic Emblem that Mr. Fisher had written down.

"Schwali scholar group, argument two."

As Principal Ken spoke again, another scholar stood up.

Moli watched Professor Fisher debate with the scholar with a serene expression, occasionally challenging the logical flaws proposed by the other side, gradually leading the stubborn Schwali Forbidden Magic Scholars onto his own train of thought.

The Schwali scholars who remained seated whispered amongst themselves, apparently exchanging ideas and discussing the feasibility of Mr. Fisher’s verification logic. But as time passed, as long as Mr. Fisher’s methods of proof could not be disproven by counterexamples, all their various arguments could be refuted by Mr. Fisher.

"So, Mr. Fisher, how would you explain the average decrease in lifespan that comes from studying magic?"

"The decrease in lifespan is not inconsistent with Magic Power stemming from the soul, and I even speculate that, to a certain extent, the reduction in lifespan is related to the soul."

"What makes you think the soul has a connection to the reduction of physical lifespan?"

"I cannot prove it now, it may be something I or another distinguished scholar will prove in future research. But just to remind you, you’ve strayed from the subject of our debate. Please provide evidence that Magic Power does not originate from the soul."

"..."

As the scholar was debated into sitting down, the whispers from Schwali’s side grew louder. Principal Ken straightened his beard, then rang the bell,

"Schwali Scholar Group, debate number twelve, is there anyone else?"

The scholars over there were still in conversation. Moli’s eyes sparkled as she looked at the composed Mr. Fisher sitting by her side. For a moment, she thought Professor Fisher was very impressive, as none of the many scholars debating with him could win.

As she watched Professor Fisher, he suddenly turned his head to look at her. She didn’t react in time and met his gaze, startling her. She quickly turned her head back towards her book, but soon couldn’t help sneaking another glance at Professor Fisher. This behavior of looking away and then peeking back was really like that of a not-so-clever little animal.

Prince Luosang glanced over at the scholars from his side who were gradually running out of steam. He did not show any other expression but looked appreciatively in Fisher’s direction.

Roger and Selena were discussing on the side what to have for dinner that evening.

"If that’s the case, we’ll pause the meeting for now and resume this afternoon..."

Principal Ken had just taken off his glasses, intending to temporarily adjourn the meeting until the Schwali scholars could regroup and continue.

But before he could finish speaking, an elderly man from the Schwali Scholar Group suddenly raised his hand. He looked towards Fisher across the table and said,

"Mr. Fisher, according to your theory, the source for releasing Magic is the Magic Circuit located on the soul, right?"

"That’s correct."

"Then how would you explain an inanimate object that can release Magic?"

"Inanimate object? You mean, something that has Magic carved into it on the spot?"

Fisher furrowed his brows and asked.

The old man nodded slowly, stood up, and looked around at the scholars and the prince. He bowed and said,

"Before coming to Nali, we went to the Kado Holy Church on behalf of the Schwali Royal Family to request a sacred ’relic.’ As everyone knows, relics are created from a variety of Magic Materials as inanimate objects, but this relic can inscribe Magic in front of people... Ladies and gentlemen, please follow us to the place where the relic is stored to explore the matter."

So, the thing they had requested from Kado was a relic that could release Magic?

If the relic was indeed an inanimate object, then how exactly did it release Magic?

Fisher glanced at Prince Luosang beside him and saw him smiling back, as if he had expected this all along.

Principal Ken looked around, stood up as well, and said,

"Then, please let us all go together to have a look."

"Please follow me this way."

Participants in the meeting room followed the leading Schwali Scholars out of the room, pushed open the door, and stepped out into the quiet hallway. The waiters kept their heads lowered at both sides. Downstairs in the banquet hall, some chatter could still be heard from the family members of the Schwali scholars.

Fisher looked out through the window where the sun shone brilliantly outside the glass, yet he somehow felt the sky looked somewhat gloomy. Ahead, a waiter with long brown hair bowed his head, waiting for the crowd to move.

Prince Luosang, however, noticed Carlo standing by the roadside. His gaze rested on the girl’s exposed pale neck without any other movement for a long time.

She was a waiter here?

Noticing someone’s gaze, Carlo slightly raised her head, only to make eye contact with Luosang who looked at her curiously. Startled, she quickly lowered her head again.

After Prince Luosang had walked past her for quite a while, she slowly raised her head and looked towards his sturdy figure.

"It’s right here."

The group halted in front of a room, where a Schwali Scholar opened the door, revealing a small box covered by a black cloth inside. Four quiet Kado priests stood by, seemingly guarding the artifact.

"Please display the relic from the Kado Church to everyone."

The Kado officials nodded, slowly removed the black cloth from over the box, and then unlocked the box. Immediately, a faint scent of Church incense wafted out.

In everyone’s view, a simple mirror stood quietly on its stand. The surface of the mirror, like a lake bathed in moonlight, began to ripple gently as the light penetrated it.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Holy Relic we have requested from the Kado Church, named ’Casheo’s Silver Mirror.’ It can inscribe a random Magic from the One Ring to the Eighth Ring for the user, and without any cost..."

While speaking, the scholar looked at Fisher behind him, who was examining the Silver Mirror, and said with a sense of pride,

"Mr. Fisher, according to your theory, how would you explain this phenomenon?"
