"Get down here and find a few people to open the bags and check through that trash!"
Lin Baici instructed.
"Got it, Big Cousin!"
Batugel eagerly rubbed his palms together.
"Call me Brother Lin!"
Batugel had a good attitude, and he was physically strong—a decent enforcer. No need to make him do the dirty and tiring work. "Do you need money?"
"Brother Lin, what kind of question is that? Of course, I do!"
Batugel chuckled.
"Work hard, then. Once we’re out, I’ll give you a Palamera!"
Lin Baici didn’t say he’d give him a million bucks. He was sincere, but this kind of promise often sounded like empty talk to others.
Better to use something tangible, like a car!
For someone wealthy, a car might just be another item in the garage, easy to part with like it’s nothing.
"Thank you, Brother Lin!"
Batugel, now pumped with excitement, jumped off the garbage truck and walked toward the Bootlicker guy.
"What do you want to do?"
The Bootlicker panicked.
"Go dig through the trash. If you don’t want to get beaten, just listen!"
Batugel threatened him.
A lot of people had initially started following along, but upon seeing this, they began to reconsider and wanted to slip away.
After all, who would want to sift through garbage?
"I dare you to leave!"
Batugel roared.
Lin Baici’s ears perked up; there were footsteps approaching.
And not just a few.
He immediately stood on tiptoes to peer into the distance.
Through the gaps between the vehicles, he saw moving corpses jogging their way over.
"What’s wrong?"
Sun Smiles straightened up and looked over as well.
"There are live corpses!"
Lin Baici was still surveying the situation when two people, who had gone off to search elsewhere in the garage, came running down the corridor in a panic.
They were clever, opting not to seek out Lin Baici but instead heading to hide in the morgue area.
That way, if something were to happen, Lin Baici and those with him would bear the brunt.
"Back to the morgue!"
Lin Baici retreated.
The actions of those two indicated there were more corpses elsewhere, likely in significant numbers. If it were just a few, they’d dealt with them before and wouldn’t be this terrified. They’d have surely notified him first.
The group hurried to follow.
As they made it into the corridor, Zheng Yu Huang turned to see the corpses appear—around a dozen, by his estimate, with more clearly following behind.
"Holy shit, there’s a ton of them!"
Zheng Yu Huang panicked: "Run, run!"
Lin Baici stopped by the door, waited for everyone to enter, and quickly locked it.
Within minutes, the corpses reached them.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
They slammed against the door, causing a piercing noise.
AHHH! AHHH!
The corpses couldn’t talk, but guttural, eerie sounds came from their throats, thoroughly chilling everyone.
"Big Cousin, I don’t think this door can hold them!"
Tang Keke was on the verge of losing it and tried to grab Lin Baici’s arm, but Su Manni and Big Sweet Sister occupied his sides.
It really couldn’t hold.
With each impact, the fire door began bulging inward. Cement dust was even starting to fall from the hinges.
"We should’ve run upstairs!"
Zheng Yu Huang and Sun Smiles said, regretting it in unison.
[Two smartasses. If you run upstairs, you’ll be dead for sure!]
[You must purify the rules pollution to leave Basement Level 1!]
Eater God commented.
"Everyone, stay quiet! Don’t make a sound!"
Zhao Qing quickly suggested.
The group came to their senses, shut their mouths at once, and even crouched down to prevent their shadows from being seen through the frosted glass.
To their despair, the pounding of the corpses didn’t stop.
It was clear they had their sights set on this group.
"Big Cousin, what do we do now?"
Peanut Butter looked utterly anxious.
Lin Baici knelt on one knee, focusing hard as he recalled everything he’d experienced since waking up.
Since Eater God didn’t provide any tips for avoiding the corpses, Lin could only rely on himself to figure this out.
The corpse refrigerators, the body bags, the ropes, the bracelet identification cards...
Lin Baici glanced at the bracelet on his wrist, then at the tag with his name on it. As he put the pieces together, a sudden idea struck him—it was a long shot, but it might just work.
"Back to the morgue!"
Lin Baici stood up and sprinted back.
The group hurriedly followed him.
Behind them:
BANG! BANG! BANG!
CRASH!
The frosted glass shattered as a dozen decayed arms and a few rotting heads of the corpses pushed through, baring their teeth and shrieking at Lin Baici’s group.
Some of the corpses were trying to climb through the windows.
Lin Baici returned to the morgue, scanned the room, and barked, "Find the corpse drawer with your name on it, put on the body bag, and lie inside!"
"Huh?"
The group froze in shock.
"Holy crap, Big Cousin, you’re a genius!"
Zheng Yu Huang gave him a thumbs-up.
"But will this really work?"
Small Horse Journey had his doubts. "Are you betting the corpses can’t open drawers?"
"Do it or don’t. Your choice!"
Lin Baici didn’t bother explaining. He sprinted to the right side of the room, immediately locating his own drawer and pulling it open to find it empty.
He retrieved a body bag and started slipping into it.
"Damn, you’re fast!"
Zheng Yu Huang was stunned.
"Brother Lin, your luck is insane!"
Su Manni was jealous.
Big Sweet Sister and Sun Smiles didn’t think it was luck.
Lin Baici had always exuded calmness, intelligence, and thoroughness. He’d likely scoped it out beforehand.
Smart as ever.
Lin Baici didn’t waste words explaining. In reality, when he’d previously inspected the corpse refrigerators, the first thing he checked was which drawer had his name on it.
Even though Lin Baici had never been to a hospital morgue, he reasoned that when families take their deceased for cremation, they need to verify the deceased’s identity. They wouldn’t just rely on the bracelet identification card. Otherwise, would someone really open each drawer to check?
No one in their right mind would open a drawer just to look at a corpse for no reason.
Therefore, the names on the refrigerators and the IDs on the corpse tags had to match!
"Shit, I can’t find my name!"
"There are so many drawers! How do we find the right one?"
"I’m Sun Smiles! If anyone sees my name, give me a holler!"
The group grew frantic, voices overlapping in chaos.
"Big Cousin, does it have to be the one with your name on it?"
Small Horse Journey, frustrated, kicked a drawer in frustration.
"I’m not sure!"
Lin Baici admitted honestly.
"Big Cousin, can you help me find mine?"
Tang Keke pleaded.
"Your name is Tang Kexuan, right?"
Lin Baici asked in return.
"Yes, yes!"
Tang Keke nodded fervently.
"Over there, third row, seventh one down."
Lin Baici gave her the location.
Tang Keke, who’d only sought Lin Baici’s help as a desperate reflex, was thrilled beyond words when he answered immediately.
She rushed to the indicated drawer and checked the name on it.
Tang Kexuan!
No mistake!
"Big Cousin, you’re a damn miracle worker!"
Tang Keke cried out in excitement.
