Chapter 43: Reinforcements

Zeke grit his teeth as the reinforcements put down the vampires with an artificial sun spell cast by their squad’s main mage.

Lily turned her attention back to Zimmer after the brief distraction but he was gone already.

Zimmer stood by the staircase, adjusting his clothes. He clapped his hands twice and the remaining vampires and lycans withdrew.

"What a mess this is. How did we let such a fine evening become such a mess?" He asked.

"Are you Zimmer, the ancient vampire that plagues this town?" a man among them asked, he was Leon. Their chief’s second in command.

"That is such a brash way to put it. Do you not have any manners? If anything, I and my brethen have kept this town safe from lycans and other creatures over the past few decades, and this is the way you thank me?!" Zimmer expressed dramatically.

"So you confirm that you are Zimmer then? we have orders to terminate you" Leon said with a stern expression.

"hey! This is our mission, not squad 8’s. Last I checked, it wasn’t a joint operation" Zeke grow more enraged as the moments passed.

"If you carried out your duties like you were supposed to, there wouldn’t be need for us to intervene but then again, that is too much to ask. Expecting competence from squad 12 is disappointment waiting to happen" Leon mocked.

"I’ll kill you" Zeke muttered, clenching this teeth tightly.

"Try if you want. Just not right now. Unlike you, I make sure to deliver on my assignments as instructed, so if you will excuse me, Ezekiel" Leon spoke in a condescending tone.

"If you’re done with your lovers quarrel, I’d like to say something now if you don’t mind" Zimmer said.

"This, this is a hostage situation. There are powerful mages among you, no? I have a favor to ask in return for the lives of these comrades of yours" Zimmer added.

"Comrades, you mean squad 12? They weren’t on the priority list. My mission is you. Our instruction is to terminate you" Leon said.

"Well, that took an unexpected turn. Must everything be by force? I guess it can’t be helped, can it?" Zimmer asked, walking down the stairs.

In an instant, he had sped over to Leon’s position, grabbed one of his squad members and returned to the stairs.

"It seems like I didn’t make myself clear. I’m not presenting you with options. You either take me seriously, or die like this one" Zimmer said, immediately snapping the neck of the lad and letting his limp body fall to the ground.

The members of squad 8 witnessed the scene with unaffected looks on their faces, Zeke, Jay and Josh on the other hand were terrified by the sight.

Lily’s aura started to spread further, She made it to Ronnie but was afraid of touching him due to her current state.

"Jayson! do something!" She thundered, moving away from Ronnie to give Jayson a chance to get through. As her comrades made their way over to Ronnie at the other side of the room, Lily struggled to keep her outburst of energy under control.

"Hurry up" she said, breathing heavily.

While this ordeal took place, squad 8 became involved in combat with Zimmer. All of them attacked at once using their squad’s special formation but they were barely able to keep up with his speed, all of them except Leon.

Zimmer started to get desperate and infuriated because his plans were crumbling, so he started attacked without a clear target.

"Leon, i have a plan" one of the mages uttered while they fought.

"Lead the way" Leon gave approval.

The mage made her way to the huge doors, running outside the mansion, hurriedly, the others followed.

"I won’t let you get away. This curse will be broken, one way or the other, I have put everything in place!!" An enraged Zimmer thundered, his soft tone had disappeared completely. He follows them and they engaged in more intense combat outside the mansion on the isolated road.

Ronnie was almost fully healed, healed enough to know where he was. He spotted the body across from them who appeared to be a dead mage but he has no reaction.

"Master" Lily called out for him softly from the corner. He got up without saying a word to Jay and the others, and he walked up to Lily.

Ronnie kissed her lips for a brief moment and she returned to the human vessel form she usually moved around in. Lily looked into Ronnie’s eyes, she could tell that something about him was different.

"It’s happening again, isn’t it?" Lily whispered.

"I think it is" he replied in an unphased manner.

"Remember who you are, remember your humanity" Lily said but Ronnie paid her no mind.

"I’ll get him back for what he did to me. I’ll show him" Ronnie muttered, uninterested in Lily’s words.

He grabbed his chain, and headed towards the exit where the action was taking place.

"Ronald, remember the promise you made me. You cant— protect me if you’re becoming who I was in the past" Lily spoke in her thoughts.

Ronnie stopped just before reaching the exit. He held his head with both hands for a moment, then he walked by to Lily and the others.

"Are you okay? You look sick" Josh asked.

"I’m fine. My wound is all healed up" Ronnie responded.

"Do you think we should help them?" Josh asked.

"No. Wouldn’t be a good idea. They can handle themselves" Jay said.

"Yeah, we should just sit back and relax" Zeke agreed.

Outside, Leon and his team wounded Zimmer countless times but he healed and regenerated too fast.

It was morning already. The sun had started to rise and Zimmer started to get weaker.

"Didn’t notice the time did you?" Leon mocked.

Zimmer’s limbs were sliced off and they took longer to regenerate. He was at Leon’s mercy.

"They know. Find him— tell him that they’ll be on to him soon" Zimmer mumbled.

"What rubbish are you talking about?" A mage asked.

Zimmer gave no reply, he looked at them defiantly.

As the sun became more intense, Zimmer got weaker. Leon, their commanding captain used a spell to set his saber on fire, then he sliced through Zimmer’s thick neck and his body fell to the floor.

"Is he dead?" A mage asked.

"Not yet, but he won’t regenerate. When the sun comes up, he’ll burn" Leon responded.

"Leon, what did he mean by what he said?" The mage asked.

"Just a dying man’s final words, don’t take it to heart" Leon said, walking away.

"We’ll clear out the vampires hidden all over the mansion, then it’s mission successful" Leon said.

At Leon’s request, the remaining vampires were found and staked with flaming stakes.

Squad 12 didn’t involve in the clean up duty. After their activities, squad 8 threw a talisman at squad 12’s feet then they disappeared into a gate they had created with a talisman.

Finally, home was in sight for the bunch. Zeke wore a disgusted look as he watched squad 8 leave.
