Chapter 93: Chapter 93 : First Day At The Military

On their first day joining the military, Zhang Fengxi and Wu Shenxia met their superior, General Fu. The general looked his two new subordinates up and down before he chuckled, "Military recruitment these days is not the same as in the past. Back in the day, nineteen-year-olds only qualified to be foot soldiers."

Zhang Fengxi arched his brow at General Fu, whose grin grew even wider when he saw that he hit a nerve.

"Of course, none of them was as talented as Prince Zhang Fengxi. I am honored to have such a shining star in my service."

Heh.

"This shining star is going to beat you up during the Supreme General selection in three years," Zhang Fengxi thought bitterly.

Zhang Fengxi was not the only one at the receiving end of General Fu’s verbal abuse. Wu Shenxia who ranked first in the military competition also had to endure the harsh greeting by the new superior.

"And here we have another female in our upper ranks. Wu Shenxia, don’t think that you are above male alphas just because you are famous," General Fu snickered at Wu Shenxia. "Women are women no matter what."

Wu Shenxia flashed the general her sweetest smile.

"General Fu, do you have anything against your father? It is rather an ironic statement, coming from someone whose father is a female alpha."

General Fu’s father was indeed a female alpha who served as a general in the heavenly realm for decades. According to circulating rumors, his father did not look favorably upon him although he was a male alpha.

Zhang Fengxi quickly masked his laughter with a series of coughs.

General Fu glared at Wu Shenxia. The veins at his neck were bulging and his face was red from both anger and embarrassment.

Unable to vent his anger at Wu Shenxia, he snapped at Zhang Fengxi instead.

"Commandant Zhang Fengxi! Clean the horse stables, NOW!"

Zhang Fengxi snickered at General Fu’s back as he fled from the embarrassing conversation.

"Good job," Zhang Fengxi gave Wu Shenxia a thumbs-up. "It is time for him to learn what humility means."

Wu Shenxia smiled at Zhang Fengxi and held out her hand in his direction.

"We have not been formally introduced. I am Wu Shenxia from Juhua Palace."

Zhang Fengxi took Wu Shenxia’s hand and shook it.

"I am Zhang Fengxi from Longjing Palace."

"Let’s go clean the stables while we talk," Wu Shenxia winked at him. "I am sure that you can use some helping hands."

Zhang Fengxi was touched.

There were a lot of strong martial artists who became famous and stood out from time to time. Their reputation soared with the number of demons that they slayed, the number of ghosts that they exterminated, and the number of villages that they saved. And yet, not many were humble enough to do lowly chores such as cleaning horse stables.

As it turned out, Wu Shenxia, a serious martial artist, had one burning question for Zhang Fengxi.

"How did it feel like to fight against the Crown Prince?" she asked out of curiosity.

Zhang Fengxi was the guy who had the privilege to fight Xie Jianyu seriously on a few occasions. He was beaten up by Xie Jianyu at the Maiden Tears Lake, and then he lost to him at the sword competition.

"He is strong," Zhang Fengxi remarked curtly, unwilling to praise Xie Jianyu to the moon and back.

"Isn’t he? You are so lucky that you got to fight him. I have wanted to spar with him for some time."

"Then, why didn’t you? Just ask him for a sparring session. He won’t say no."

Wu Shenxia laughed.

"What are you talking about? He is the Crown Prince. You can’t just walk up to him and challenge him. It is improper."

"..."

Zhang Fengxi bit back his tongue as he shoveled piles of horse manure out of the stables. Now that he thought about it, was that not the reason why he kept getting punished after returning to the past?

Zhang Fengxi rolling on the ground with Xie Jianyu.

Zhang Fengxi kicking Xie Jianyu’s leg and making him fall into Crystal Jade Pond.

Zhang Fengxi shoving Xie Jianyu around in Fuxi Palace...

The list went on and on...

Zhang Fengxi cleared his throat.

Alright, maybe he should have treated Xie Jianyu with more respect. He was the Crown Prince, he was the Crown Prince...

They had not even finished with one side of the stables when a group of people arrived at the horse stables. Zhang Fengxi lowered his shovel and squinted at the unexpected visitors.

Leading at the front was none other than Xie Jianyu, who was walking in long strides while General Fu and a few squires were running after him with pale and sweaty faces.

"Crown Prince! Your Majesty does not have to step foot in this filthy area! This subject will ask Prince Zhang Fengxi to come right away!" General Fu shouted.

"I am not the Emperor, no need to stop your training just because I came to visit," Xie Jianyu answered nonchalantly.

"Crown Prince, please do not trouble yourself this way!!!"

Xie Jianyu stopped in his tracks when he arrived in front of the horse stables.

He wrinkled his nose at the disgusting stench that permeated the air, but what stunned him more was the sight of Zhang Fengxi and Wu Shenxia, the two newly-appointed military commandants. Their pants and boots were covered in horse manure. There were even some traces of dirt on their faces.

Xie Jianyu whipped around and stared at General Fu in disbelief.

"General Fu, is this how you treat your talented recruits? Is cleaning the horse stables part of your training program?"

General Fu turned bright red at Xie Jianyu’s scolding.

"This... This subject just wanted the two new commandants to practice some humility. After all, they just joined the military..."

Xie Jianyu furrowed his brows at General Fu.

"Humility does not equal humiliation. Which of their subordinates will look up to them when they see their superiors in this state?"

General Fu gritted his teeth.

"This subject is wrong..."

Xie Jianyu scoffed.

"Both of you, get out and clean yourselves," he told Zhang Fengxi and Wu Shenxia, who happily stepped out of the horse stables.

"Zhang Fengxi," Xie Jianyu then called out. "I need to speak to you. I will be waiting at the archery ground."
