Chapter 404: Chapter 404 : A Night At Wushan Temple (3)

Upon hearing Qiao Wei’s words, Zhang Fengxi’s blood froze in his veins.

"Oh? And why?" he asked, his voice dripping with menace.

"As long as I am in this body, I have to live as Qiao Wei. In this life, Qiao Wei is engaged to Little Ling."

The taste of vinegar filled Zhang Fengxi’s mouth, making it difficult for him to behave like an adult alpha of his standing.

"Little Ling, hm? How sweet," he snarled.

Zhang Fengxi took a step closer to Qiao Wei. The latter took a step back when he saw the dangerous glint across the alpha’s eyes.

"Fengxi, what are you doing?" Qiao Wei asked.

"Me? What are you talking about?" Zhang Fengxi asked. His tone was nonchalant, but his eyes were burning with jealousy.

The couple performed a macabre dance across the chamber, until Qiao Wei had no more space to retreat to.

Zhang Fengxi slammed his hands against the wall, trapping Qiao Wei between his muscular arms.

The two men were locked in a staring competition, one that none deigned to lose.

"Jianbao, I don’t get you," Zhang Fengxi slowly said, his words thick with fury.

"Do you remember how upset you were when you thought that I would remarry and have children with others after you passed away?

Don’t you think that you are doing exactly the same thing right now??? What do you expect me to do, just nod, smile, and stay the hell out of your way???"

"I didn’t remarry and have children with others after your death," Qiao Wei pointed out. "I transmigrated to Qiao Wei’s body. Naturally, I am obliged to walk this life as dictated by fate."

Zhang Fengxi’s hands grabbed Qiao Wei’s shoulders hard and shook him.

"And fate asked you to marry Bai Ling, huh?

What are you going to do next, Jianbao? Will you sleep with her and make her bear your babies?"

Alone the thought made Zhang Fengxi feel sick, but Qiao Wei’s silence made everything a thousand times worse.

"..."

"Answer me!!!"

Qiao Wei rubbed a hand against his eyes and sighed.

"Fengxi, it’s not like I am having her babies..."

That was not what Zhang Fengxi wanted to hear at all.

"So what!!!" He exploded. "They will still be your children! Yours and hers! What will Mingrui and Junjie think about this? They will think that you abandon them to get yourself a batch of new babies!"

Qiao Wei glared at Zhang Fengxi.

"Do not drag Mingrui and Junjie into this matter!"

"And why not? They have the right to know! I am going to tell them everything and you cannot stop me!"

"Fengxi, don’t be unreasonable! They are still young, they won’t understand!" Qiao Wei snapped.

"Well, I am NOT young, and I also do not understand!" Zhang Fengxi cried out.

"That’s because you are too childish to understand!" Qiao Wei shouted in return.

"...!!!"

Qiao Wei regretted his words as soon as they left his lips, but it was too late to retract them.

The momentary silence that settled between them afterward, thick with unspoken apologies and simmering resentment, stretched into an eternity.

Qiao Wei watched, his heart thundering against his ribs, as Zhang Fengxi’s expression shifted from anger to a cold, unreadable mask.

"Very well," Zhang Fengxi growled.

And then, with a final, eloquent flick of his sleeve, he vanished, leaving behind a void as vast and desolate as the unspoken words between them.

As the echo of Zhang Fengxi’s footsteps faded, the room seemed to tilt around Qiao Wei. His legs, drained of all strength by the emotional storm, finally gave way, collapsing him onto the cold floor.

"Oh, Fengxi," he whispered into his palm.

For as long as he could remember, he fought with Zhang Fengxi once every two meetings.

And yet, counting from the first day they crossed weapons to the day he perished, this was probably the worst fight they had ever had.

And it happened while they were leading lives in two different realms, too.

Zhang Fengxi was at leisure to come and visit Qiao Wei as often as he wanted.

On the contrary, Qiao Wei was bound to the Human Realm. Even if he wanted to apologize to Zhang Fengxi for his harsh remarks, he could not.

He had to wait until Zhang Fengxi came to see him.

Judging from how angry he was today, he most likely wouldn’t come again. Unless Qiao Wei was knocking at the Underworld’s gate.

The depressive thought made Qiao Wei hang his head in dejection.

Having vented her displeasure elsewhere, Bai Ling returned soon after.

She was more than happy to find Qiao Wei alone.

"Did Sir Zhang leave?" She asked, not bothering to hide her glee.

"Mmm."

"Oh, and I asked the kitchen to prepare a lot of food too. Wei Wei... I know you barely ate anything last night. Come, let’s enjoy breakfast together."

"Mmm."

Bai Ling pursed her lips.

"Wei Wei... Are you angry with me? Or did that Sir Zhang make you angry? Come on. At least tell me what is happening. Maybe I can help."

"Little Ling..."

Qiao Wei pulled her into a hug.

"Little Ling, I am sorry."

Bai Ling widened her eyes in surprise.

Qiao Wei never took the initiative to hug her before! This was definitely an important milestone in their relationship!

But what was with the apology?

Bai Ling’s heart turned cold in an instant.

Call it a woman’s instinct, but coupled with Qiao Wei’s cold attitude toward her the previous night, Bai Ling was pretty sure that it didn’t mean anything good.

"I want to talk to you before I talk to Shizun," Qiao Wei’s voice trembled slightly as he spoke.

"I cannot marry you, Little Ling. You didn’t do anything wrong. I am at fault here, and I am willing to leave the sect should you or Shizun demand it."
