Zhang Fengxi stared at the Goddess, who did not flinch under his intensive gaze. The Goddess’ calm demeanor greatly irritated him.

"So you do know where my wife’s soul currently is," he said in a menacing tone.

The Goddess shot the supreme general a curt, polite smile that betrayed nothing.

Inside the great mirror, Qiao Wei and Bai Ling were walking hand-in-hand, obviously on their way back to Mount Wu.

"It is my job to weave the strings of fate for each soul. I will not deny that I am paying special attention to the Crown Prince’s soul."

"I am very happy that Jianbao has a special place in your heart. And yet I thought that we agreed to work together to find Jianyu’s soul," Zhang Fengxi reminded her. "It seems that I have been the one who did the entire work so far."

"You did a very good job," the Goddess said in retaliation, without feeling the least bit guilty.

"Glad to obtain your seal of approval. Tell me, Goddess -- were you just using me to find his soul?"

The Goddess scoffed.

"In essence, yes. You have strong karmic ties with the Crown Prince, so you naturally have a better chance of finding him compared to me."

Zhang Fengxi glared at the silver-haired girl in front of him.

How utterly shameless for a goddess, he thought. Fortunately, Zhang Fengxi had learned over the years to be magnanimous with both his words and attitude.

"Forget it," he snapped. "I am here for a purpose."

"And the purpose is...?"

"I wish to remove Qiao Wei from the Human Realm and take him to live with me in the Heavenly Realm."

The Goddess shook her head.

"If you do that, Supreme General, the Crown Prince is going to pay heavily for your deed in the future."

"That is the reason I come here. I need you to nullify all adverse effects that might result from my action."

The Goddess, though diminutive in stature, rose with an air of command that belied her small size. Her displeasure was evident in the tightening of her brow and the set of her jaw.

"Most believers have to pray to get their wishes granted, but you, Supreme General, sure consider yourself above everyone else."

"Feel free to tell me how long I need to pray, and how many incenses I need to burn. If necessary, I will build you several shrines in the Human Realm. Is that good enough?"

"Supreme General! Watch your words!" She snapped furiously.

"I too wish that I could watch my words, Goddess. This is not a request; this is my demand."

"The three realms do not revolve around you, Supreme General," the Goddess snarled at him. And then, she started giving him a lecture.

"For every action, there is a reaction*. Your selfishness is like a small pebble, tossed into the deep waters and generating a small ripple on the surface.

Beneath that ripple, great changes might take place. And more to follow.

Besides, how, do you think, will the people around you respond if you randomly bring a human being to Heavenly Realm and keep him by your side?"

"Qiao Wei is not any random human being," Zhang Fengxi remarked. "He is Jianyu."

"He is Qiao Wei, he is not the Crown Prince," the Goddess insisted. "Qiao Wei and Xie Jianyu are two very different individuals, born under different stars in two different realms."

"Those are pesky details that no one cares about," the alpha snapped. "He is my wife because my wife’s soul resides in his body!"

"No, that is not true."

The Goddess took a deep breath. As she flicked her wrist, the giant mirror’s surface rippled, swallowing the images of Qiao Wei and Bai Ling. In their place, Xie Jianyu’s sleeping form materialized within the ancient tomb.

"This is your wife. The one you could not afford to let go. The one you promise to wait for, no matter how long it may take."

Zhang Fengxi’s lips fell open slightly when his gaze fell on his wife’s beautiful face. The raging war against the Demonic Realm had separated him from his family.

The past few weeks felt like years.

This was the first time he saw his beloved wife again, although he was unable to touch and hold his empty form in his arms.

The Crown Prince was as beautiful as always. The peaceful smile on his face stood in contrast with the ragged lines that were etched on Zhang Fengxi’s face.

In the past five years, Zhang Fengxi had been forced to continue living without his wife by his side.

It was beyond torturous.

"Jianbao..."

The Goddess’ facial expression softened when she saw the look on Zhang Fengxi’s face.

Sighing to herself, she said, "This is why it is generally not allowed to continue chasing a person after death. You must understand that when the Crown Prince died, all ties he formed with you in that life ended.

In his next reincarnation, he is free to fall in love and to get married and to have children with other people."

Zhang Fengxi averted his gaze from the giant mirror.

"I don’t want to look anymore," he said.

The Goddess sauntered toward him and tugged gently at his sleeve.

"Supreme General, this is how reincarnation cycles work. Don’t let your jealousy cloud your judgment.

You have precious people to protect in this life. Do not lose your sight over them, or you will regret it bitterly."

Unable to persuade the Goddess to do his bidding, Zhang Fengxi left soon after.

When he arrived at Fuxi Palace, it was already way past the twins’ sleeping time.

The supreme general went to say hello to Xie Jianyu for a bit before he went to his babies’ bed chamber to take a look at their lovely sleeping faces.

As usual, the boys were unable to maintain their sleeping positions on the bed.

Xie Junjie’s upper half was lying on the ground, with only one of his feet covered by the quilt.

Zhang Mingrui was sleeping at the end of the bed, his entire body tucked beneath the quilt.

Zhang Fengxi gently lifted his sons to his arms and restored their sleeping positions.

Then he took off his outer robe and lay next to them, cuddling them to his chest as he slowly let exhaustion settle on him and drag him to a dreamless sleep.
