Chapter 312: Chapter 312 : Succession To The Throne (7)
Zhang Fengxi, a seasoned general whose style was tempered by the amount of battles he fought on various battlegrounds, always sought to confront the most formidable opponent.
The key to his victories often lay in incapacitating the enemy’s leader, demoralizing their ranks and rendering them easier to subdue.
It was with this strategy in mind that he single-handedly broke through rows and rows of demons who stood between him and the First Demon King, only to separate the latter from his army and isolate him from the support of his troops.
Their exchange of blows led them to the Crystal Jade Pond, a serene oasis amidst the chaos that engulfed the Golden Dragon Palace.
The clash between the two alphas sent shockwaves through the air, their weapons colliding in deafening clangs that echoed through the valley.
The Crystal Jade Pond, once a symbol of tranquility, now trembled under the intensity of their duel.
Dark demonic and red fiery auras clashed in a fierce struggle for supremacy, their contrasting colors swirling together in a dazzling display of power.
It was impossible to determine the superior one between the two alphas, for they were evenly matched in strength and skill.
The Three Realm Spear and the First Demon King’s Silver Yin Sword clashed together in a blur of steel, sparks flying as each attack met its match.
While the First Demon King wielded his sword with savage ferocity, Zhang Fengxi countered with swift and precise movements only to land surprise attacks that grated on his opponent’s nerves.
At one point, Zhang Fengxi aimed to stab into the Demon King’s gut, but the ruler of the Demonic Realm dodged his attack with ease.
A chuckle escaped the First Demon King as he landed lightly on a small bridge that extended between the edge of the pond and the Crystal Jade Pavilion.
"Do you know what’s the most interesting thing here, General Zhang Fengxi?" he asked, exhaustion finally taking its toll on his movements.
"Your impending death?" Zhang Fengxi taunted his opponent.
A sneer appeared on the First Demon King’s face. "Arrogance and confidence. Such explosive combination for such a young age."
The First Demon King raised his sword in Zhang Fengxi’s direction.
"I still remember you," he said. "I dislike you from the first moment we met. You turn out to be the exact nuisance I thought you would grow up to be."
Zhang Fengxi sneered.
"What an honor. Thank you for believing in me."
"Hmph! Insolent brat."
The Silver Yin Sword struck with such force that the Three Realm Spear seemed to wail in pain.
"You will soon learn what it means to respect the age and skill difference between us."
"I don’t know that," Zhang Fengxi drawled. "I am no longer that young man who failed to extinguish his own fire. On the other hand, I trust that you are still that cowardly demon king who ran away with his tail tucked between his legs."
The First Demon King’s smile vanished in an instant, replaced by a thunderous roar of rage as he lunged at Zhang Fengxi.
"Ugh!"
Zhang Fengxi managed to parry the attack at the last second, but the force of the blow sent the Three Realm Spear flying from his hands. He was thrown backwards with such force that he landed in the Crystal Jade Pond with a resounding splash.
Zhang Fengxi struggled to swim to the surface, but something was holding him back. He felt unseen hands pushing against his chest, preventing him from breaking free. He clawed at the water in desperation, but it was no use.
He was trapped and his consciousness was slowly dwindling away.
His opponent, the First Demon King, was hovering above water with both arms raised in front of him. His face turned a deep shade of red, and his veins bulged like angry serpents beneath his skin as he exerted every bit of demonic power in his body to keep Zhang Fengxi underwater.
Minutes passed, and the resistance that pushed against him slowly ebbed. The First Demon King’s face twisted into a self-sufficient grimace.
The tiger dared to oppose him in such a bold and courageous manner, but he ended up paying for his insolence with his life. What a befitting punishment for someone who dared to speak that way to him, the exalted ruler of the Demonic Realm.
The First Demon King did not get to savor his victory for a long time, because an unexpected vortex of fire rose from the pond, its embers swirling like a dance of death. Bright, fiery red pillars shot out of the center of the vortex, aiming at him like vengeful ghosts that climbed up from the deepest layer of hell.
Caught by surprise, the First Demon King staggered backward in disbelief. Despite his best attempts to dispel the attacks, the fire could not be extinguished at all. A fiery pillar caught the end of his cape and set it ablaze.
The demon king had to rip off the entire cape and threw it into the pond before the fire consumed his entire body.
Impossible, he thought frantically with a heavily pounding heart.
A tiger could not possibly stay underwater for that long and still survive!
But Zhang Fengxi was not an average tiger from the tiger clan.
Zhang Fengxi shot out of the water like a glistening arrow, his Three Realm Spear raised high in his hand. He landed at the same height over the water surface, his drenched clothes dripping and clinging to his body.
The general pointed his spear at his opponent, his eyes blazing with defiance.
The First Demon King involuntarily drew his gaze towards Zhang Fengxi’s spear. Its blade had assumed a bluish crystalline appearance, as if it were covered in a layer of frost. A faint glow emanated from the blade, filling the air with an aura of power and mystery.
That was not the most shocking part. The aura that oozed out of the blade took the distinct form of a gigantic ice dragon. The dragon was so large that it cast a shadow over half of the pond.
Floating behind Zhang Fengxi like a loyal guardian, it directed its silver eyes at the First Demon King.
Zhang Fengxi flicked his spear with a calm and practiced motion. The ice dragon behind him reared its head back and opened its mouth, revealing a cavernous maw lined with rows of jagged teeth.
A ball of energy began to form within the dragon’s mouth, growing larger and larger with each passing second.
"Didn’t you say something about teaching me a lesson?" Zhang Fengxi asked the First Demon King with a vicious sneer on his face.
