Chapter 311: Chapter 311 : Succession To The Throne (6)
To be exact, the heavenly creatures were none other than the palace masters who left Xie Jianyu’s side to protect the hostages from their clans.
This explained why the reinforcement from the Demonic Realm never came. Apparently, they were intercepted on their way into the hall.
Xie Jianzhi’s angry voice was heard some distance away.
Apparently, despite his determination to end Xie Jianyu’s life then and there, he was not interested in putting himself in the path of harm. He instead chose to escape with the group of captured prisoners.
"You traitors!" He spat. "I pardoned the lives of your children and you go against me not a second after!"
The alpha yelped when Zhou Guizheng’s attack almost hit him and shattered the wall behind him instead.
"Traitors?"
The Qingyuan Palace Master’s eyes burned with an inferno of rage. His face contorted into a mask of fury, his lips drawn back in a snarl that revealed his gritted teeth.
With a deafening roar, he swung his saber with the force of a hurricane, its razor-sharp edge slicing through the air like a bolt of lightning. Xie Jianzhi, caught in the vortex of his master’s wrath, narrowly dodged the fatal blow, the blade grazing his neck and leaving a searing trail of pain in its wake.
"Pardon our children’s lives? Don’t make me laugh."
"Little Yu, let’s go."
Xie Jianshen urged Xie Jianyu to leave. At least the palace masters seemed to manage the situation quite well, the Crown Prince thought. He thus let his elder brother drag him further away from the spot.
"Hang in there, Little Yu," Xie Jianshen kept saying, more to himself than to Xie Jianyu.
Xie Jianshen was usually several steps ahead of others, but this time he was lost.
As an omega, he never had to witness any battle, let alone be involved in one.
He had even less experience in sneaking a pregnant person out in these chaotic circumstances.
Thankfully, Xie Jianyu knew where to go.
"This way, Big Brother," he pointed in a direction. "There is a secret passage leading outside of the palace in the east. It was used during the..."
"Spare me the historical lecture," Xie Jianshen snapped impatiently. "Let’s hurry."
While Zhou Guizheng, Li Haoran, and Yang Jiali were fighting the demons, Wu Qingyou and Song Weiyang were busy with the hostages.
The demons who held them captive had been killed, but more were coming. The two palace masters started to get overwhelmed.
To make it worse, the younglings who they just rescued could offer no help at all. In fact, they were no different from babies who were incapable of doing anything on their own.
It was hardly their fault, the Qifeng Palace Master thought to himself bitterly. Who was it who pampered these brats to the moon and back?
Never mind the omegas and the betas, even the alphas did not bother practicing martial arts or dabbing in cultivation.
Truly, the next generation of palace masters was nothing but a disappointment.
"Palace Master Song, go ahead!" Wu Qingyou hissed at his comrade. "Bring them to safety. I will try to handle the demons on my own!"
Song Weiyang gave Wu Qingyou a grateful nod.
"Thank you, Palace Master Wu."
Song Weiyang hurried the rescued hostages past the secret corridors that led them outside of the palace. He could not risk taking the usual path because the demons might be waiting for them there.
"Come on!!!!"
Song Weiyang’s frustrated voice was heard as he shook his son’s shoulders.
"Zhuquan, you must be able to do this much. Dispatch cloud carriages to take them all back to their respective palaces. I need to go back to kill those demons!"
Song Zhuquan trembled from head to toe.
"Father, don’t," he begged. "What if the demons kill you? Father, please!"
Song Weiyang closed his eyes, refusing to look at his son. He betrayed Xie Jianyu, the Crown Prince, the legitimate heir to the Dragon Throne, to save this son of his, but he was an embarrassment for an alpha.
"Useless!" Song Weiyang spat angrily, but it only served to make Song Zhuquan cry harder.
"Wahhhh... Wahhhh... Father, don’t be mad."
Just as Song Weiyang was about to lose his mind, someone offered a helping hand.
"Palace Master Song, let me handle them."
Song Weiyang whipped around and saw Xie Jianyu approaching them in a hurry. Behind him, Xie Jianshen rolled hard with his eyes. He looked like he was about to vomit blood.
Song Weiyang was speechless.
At the same time, he was deeply embarrassed.
"Your Majesty, I... We are not worthy..."
"Save those words for later," Xie Jianyu said. "Leave them to me. I will return them to their palaces safe and sound."
Song Weiyang’s usually stoic face crumbled, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.
In a gesture of profound respect and humility, Song Weiyang sank to his knees, his body trembling with the weight of his emotions. His hands pressed against the cold marble floor, his forehead touching the ground in a deep kowtow.
He bowed three times, each movement a testament to the depth of his gratitude towards Xie Jianyu.
And then, he bolted in the opposite direction to help Wu Qingyou.
Xie Jianyu and Xie Jianshen moved efficiently.
They got in contact with a few eunuchs and put together an elaborate evacuation plan.
While the eunuchs stealthily navigated the labyrinthine network of secret passages to arrange for cloud carriages, Xie Jianyu and Xie Jianshen led the group of rescued hostages to the secret exit.
As soon as one cloud carriage arrived, it was stuffed full with as many surviving hostages as possible and departed without further delay.
As he urged the frightened boys and girls into the cloud carriages, Xie Jianyu prayed with every strand of his body.
Please, please, he begged.
Fengxi, you must be safe.
Please be safe.
In response to his prayer, an earsplitting explosion occurred at the center of the palace.
A fiery hurricane, a tempest of incandescent flames, erupted from the depths of the battlefield, its fiery tendrils reaching toward the sky like the grasping fingers of a vengeful god.
Xie Jianyu screamed in his head.
Fengxi...!!!
