Chapter 210: Chapter 210 : The Revelation (2)

"Have you never wondered why Little Yu learned to cultivate swordsmanship as soon as he could even walk?" Xie Jianshen asked. He strode casually around Zhang Fengxi as he spoke.

"If you recall, neither my father nor I cultivate. Cultivation is never a necessary part of a future heavenly emperor’s upbringing."

It was equally not necessary for future palace masters to dab in cultivation.

"My father and I made Little Yu cultivate because cultivation is known to promote health and prolong a person’s life."

"..."

"Thankfully, Little Yu was a very obedient child. My father and I did not have to force him to meditate or practice swordsmanship. He is, quite frankly, a natural. I trust that despite the hard work, he enjoyed it as well."

Zhang Fengxi swallowed hard.

He used to think that Xie Jianyu was a privileged, pampered child who rose to the top of cultivation ladders thanks to his excellent background.

He recalled being envious of Xie Jianyu for many years in the past, especially when Zhang Zhiyuan started comparing him to Xie Jianyu.

It was an unfair comparison, he said.

It truly was an unfair comparison, but not for the same reason.

Zhang Fengxi was born with perfect health.

Xie Jianyu was sickly and frail from birth.

If Zhang Fengxi worked harder on his cultivation, he could have gone further than Xie Jianyu.

He never once thought that for all the time he spent playing in the Human Realm, Xie Jianyu locked himself up in seclusion and meditated earnestly.

Zhang Fengxi could not begin to tell how ashamed he was of his foolish younger self.

"When he differentiated into an omega, there was an option to pass the Crown Prince position to someone else in the dragon clan. In fact, this was the practice of many generations when the ruling family failed to produce an alpha son to continue the family line.

The main reason why we decided to convert him into an alpha was to spare him the horrible fate of an omega," Xie Jianshen continued explaining. "As an omega -- a son of the Heavenly Emperor or not -- he will have to give birth, and endure the same tribulations that all omegas go through for as long as they are alive."

Xie Jianshen’s eyes grew increasingly red from suppressed emotions as he said what he needed to say.

"Little Yu’s body is already weak to begin with. Childbirth is going to be the final nail in his coffin. Zhang Fengxi, if you truly love Little Yu from the bottom of your heart, you will not force him to birth your child."

A wave of dizziness overcame Zhang Fengxi, causing his view to spin.

His world was crashing down into pieces at this very moment.

Everything that he hoped for...

His atonement toward Xie Jianyu...

The baby...

Their baby...

Zhang Fengxi was unable to decide whether he needed to vomit or pass out. His body did not feel like his own. He was looking for something to support himself with when Xie Jianshen grabbed his arm and squeezed it hard.

The squeeze prompted Zhang Fengxi to raise his eyes and look at Xie Jianshen. The omega’s eyes welled up with tears. His chin trembled from the struggle to hold them back.

"After Little Yu leaves, you are free to marry another omega to secure your bloodline. You have all the time in the world to sire children. Please do not make Little Yu suffer in the few years he has to live."

Zhang Fengxi had to inhale and exhale a few times before he choked out the one question that Xie Jianshen was able to answer for sure.

"Does Jianyu know?"

Xie Jianshen released the alpha’s arm.

"No, and I prefer that he remains oblivious for the rest of his life."

Zhang Fengxi shot his future brother-in-law a stern look.

"Then how am I going to explain to him that we cannot have children of our own?"

"Little Yu does not need to know," Xie Jianshen decided.

"You plan to keep him in the dark until the end?" Zhang Fengxi asked in disbelief.

"What Little Yu does not know will not hurt him," Xie Jianshen answered calmly. "If it is not necessary, why would I want to hurt him deliberately?"

"Jianyu deserves to know," Zhang Fengxi insisted.

"What good is there to let him know?"

"That..."

"Little Yu has gone through a lot. It is enough pain for a lifetime. As his husband, you should protect not only his body but also his heart."

"... I cannot lie to him."

Xie Jianshen smiled at Zhang Fengxi as if the latter was but a fool.

"You don’t need to lie. All you need to do is be careful and exercise caution whenever you engage in an intimate relationship with Little Yu."

Xie Jianshen stepped closer to the alpha and placed his hand on Zhang Fengxi’s shoulder. His touch was as firm as steel and as cold as ice.

"And if you don’t know how to best do that... do consult some of your more experienced peers."

Xie Jianshen walked past Zhang Fengxi and went into Xie Jianyu’s bed chamber. The sound of the omega’s retreating footsteps slowly receded, leaving only a deafening silence behind.

Zhang Fengxi’s legs gave away and he collapsed under his own weight. Only the pain from having his knees hitting the pavement stones kept him awake.

His eyes were open, but his mind wandered to the future. One when he and Xie Jianyu held a baby together. The same baby he lost in his previous life.

Xie Jianyu looked so happy.

Zhang Fengxi could not be happier.

The baby was alive and healthy. He looked so similar to Xie Jianyu. And he laughed so happily. So adorably. Their son.

Zhang Fengxi’s fingers scraped across the rough surface beneath him.

The baby was not going to exist.

He could not exist, because then his mother would be gone.

Xie Jianyu does not stay for long.

Zhang Fengxi’s shoulders shook from grief over his unborn child. Tears fell from his eyes, raining down onto the stone pavement.

"I am sorry," he sobbed, apologizing to the baby who had yet to exist.

"I am so sorry. I cannot afford to lose Xie Jianyu."
