Chapter 22: A step into the future (⊙_◎)

For the past few days, Leo had been working diligently at his part-time mall job. He showed up on time, did more than he was asked, and helped out in areas that weren’t even part of his duties. He didn’t complain. If anything, keeping busy helped distract him from how much he missed Sarah...

But before he even realized it, like a blink in time, the day of his game development interview had arrived...

(Ding...dong...)

"Hmm?" Leo muttered, his mouth full of bread, as he stepped away from the mirror. He had just finished adjusting his collar, checking his reflection one last time... A half-eaten loaf of bread was still in his hand, his breakfast was rushed and unfinished...

He walked to the door with a small smile...half nerves, half excitement, wondering who it was.

Leo opened the door halfway, peeking through the gap to see who it was. His eyes widened in surprise and excitement. It was, "Uncle Tanaka?!"

Without thinking, Leo pushed the door open and rushed forward, wrapping his arms around his uncle, who stood there in front of the door...

His uncle laughed, patting Leo’s back slowly. "Easy, boy! Are you trying to crush me to death, before my time?"

Leo stepped back, punching his fist on his shoulder, grinning. "Uncle Tanaka, you didn’t tell me you were coming!"

"I wanted to surprise you," his uncle laughed. "Figured you’d be nervous. Thought maybe you could use a familiar face before the interview."

Leo nodded, still smiling, while his palms were sweaty. "Yeah... I’m glad you came."

His uncle gave him a look-over, nodding in approval. "Nice shirt. But eat that loaf of bread before we get there. You’re not walking into a gaming company chewing like a goat."

Leo chuckled, hands on his waist, as he tossed the bread into his mouth, chewing quickly, trying not to choke on it...

"Good," his uncle responded with a smirk, giving a thumbs-up, closing his one eye in approval...

Leo took a deep breath. "Uncle. I am done."

His uncle hooked an arm around his shoulder, and together, they headed downstairs...

Leo knew he couldn’t afford to mess this up. He wasn’t getting any younger, and this job wasn’t just about money...it was about stability, responsibility... the future...

Sarah. Marriage. Children...

All those things flashed through his mind like a Hollywood movie. He finally understood what his dad had gone through, working overtime just to keep everything together...

Being an an adult wasn’t a joke.

But he was really happy his uncle was there to accompany and support him...

From a very young age, Leo had always shared a close bond with his family members, especially with Uncle Tanaka.

Tanaka wasn’t just an uncle. He was like a second father, an older brother, and a best friend all wrapped into one. When Leo scraped his knee while playing on a tree as a kid, it was Tanaka who patched him up and teased him until he stopped crying...

When Leo confessed in middle school and got his heart broken for the first time, it was Tanaka who sat with him in silence, offering snacks and dumb jokes...

And now, even as Leo prepared for one of the most important times of his life, Tanaka was right beside him...calm, steady, and supportive...

Leo was so lost in his thoughts, he didn’t even notice they had reached the bus stop. His uncle had already called a taxi.

"Leo," his uncle said, snapping him back to reality. "Get in?"

Leo nodded, climbing in immediately, taking a seat closer to the window...

After a while of silence between them, Leo glanced at him in the taxi, a quiet smile forming on his lips...

"Uncle, thank you for coming with me today," he exclaimed to ease his burden and emotion...

His uncle grinned without looking. "Stop it, Leo. You’re going to make an old man cry."

Moments later, they arrived at the interview building...

It was a sleek, 20-story building with mirrored glass that reflected the sunlight on Leo’s face as he stepped out of the taxi and stared up in awe, his mouth slightly open...

"Woah..." Leo whispered under his breath, trying to stay composed...

He had always been an indoor gamer; his world lived inside screens and headsets. Big buildings like this, glass walls, suits, and polished tile floors... it was all unfamiliar, almost overwhelming...

What seemed normal to others felt huge to him...

Still, he kept this side of himself hidden from Sarah. He didn’t want to seem awkward or uncool around her...

But standing here now, his heart pounding fast, he knew one thing for sure... this was real. And he wasn’t going to let it slip through his fingers. He must move forward this time...

His uncle chuckled, shaking his head, and handed cash to the taxi driver. "Leo, you’re behaving like a village boy. Close your mouth before a fly jumps in."

Leo blushes in embarrassment while putting his head down...

Then they both walked through the entrance, and if Leo had been impressed before, now he was stunned but the view inside...

The lobby was like something out of a Hollywood movie, polished tile floors, a crystal chandelier that looked like it cost more than his entire apartment combined...

TV screens on the walls showcasing scenes from different video games that the company had made...

Leo turned in circles, taking it all in, his eyes wide like a kid at an amusement park...

"Come on," his uncle replied, placing a hand on his back. "Stay focused."

He swallowed, nodding as he followed...

They both approached the counter where a neatly dressed secretary sat typing away on a keyboard...

"Good morning," she said without looking up at them. "Name and appointment?"

Leo blinked, quickly snapping back to reality. He stepped forward, nervously brushing his trousers...

"Leo Kuroko," he explained, trying to keep his voice steady. "I’m here for the 9 a.m. interview... Game Development Division."

The secretary looked up, gave him a quick outfit check, then smiled. "Okay, please follow me."

She stood up, walking around the desk with graceful ease. Leo adjusted his shirt awkwardly and gave a slight nod before following behind her.

Just before he stepped into the elevator, he glanced back...

His uncle stood by the entrance, hands in his pockets, giving him a thumbs up with a wide, proud smile like a father who had just taken his child to school for the first time...

Leo couldn’t help but grin back...

He murmured, trying not to make it obvious for the secretary to see, "Wish me luck."

His uncle mouthed back, "You don’t need it."

Waving...

As the elevator doors began to close, Leo.
