Chapter 329: Chapter 299: The Path of Salvation
"The Law of Recovery can’t help," Xu Yang pondered, "this is a condition she’s had since birth, meaning even if she were taken back to the very beginning, she would still be like this. Auto-doctors are mainly intended for treating external injuries and can’t handle pediatrics."
"Then we can only watch her die." Farosa said indifferently.
Xu Yang said nothing, not denying the possibility.
Farosa also remained silent, seated at her chair, giving 101 and 102 a look. 101 instantly took 102 back to the safe house in Shijin Mansion. Once they left, Farosa still sat in her place, but tears flowed from her eyes.
"Don’t be sad..." Xu Yang wiped the tears from Farosa’s eyes.
"Crocodile tears." Farosa’s face was expressionless, allowing Xu Yang to wipe away her tear streaks.
"Don’t rush, there is still one more option," Xu Yang squatted beside the pitiable infant, "We need to go to a hospital."
"A hospital for humans?" Farosa shook her head, never trusting humans outside her own power.
"We’ll be careful, and I will handle all contact," Xu Yang started searching for medical institutions still operating in Anjiu City. Because of a shortage of medical supplies, only a few large hospitals were still in business, able to ensure supply of equipment and materials.
Farosa closed her eyes, taking a deep breath.
"Found one." Xu Yang saw that a large hospital was still operating, founded by the giant corporation, Rose Medicine, "Farosa, are you willing to let us make one last attempt to save this little infant?"
"Hurry up!" Farosa said impatiently.
Xu Yang steered the Purple Wind in a different direction, heading toward Rose Private Medical Center, built on the top of a colossal structure. It was dusk, and most departments were dark.
On the way, he debated whether to register the infant for pediatrics or witchcraft medical care. Upon reaching the hospital, he realized there was no need to worry, for the pediatrics department was not even open. The website showed only one on-call doctor in the witchcraft department. Xu Yang tried to register, but the doctor’s slots for the day were already full and no new slots were available. The whole hospital was effectively in a semi-closed state.
Xu Yang parked the shuttle machine at the landing pad, only realizing when he approached that the medical center had previously been attacked by troops from Black Fire Innovation. The walls were charred, the medicine cabinets overturned, most windows utterly shattered, the glass debris not even swept, security robots were toppled, yet no one managed or cleaned up. The entire medical center was desolate; the main entrance was smashed and collapsed, impassable, leaving only a half-open side door for entry, clearly not offering open reception.
Should they find another hospital? Xu Yang worried.
But Rose Medicine offered the best medical services in the world, and the incurable disease of the witchcraft infant could only possibly be cured there.
He told Farosa to stay on the shuttle, hugging the infant’s incubator in his arms, squeezing through the narrow door, passing through the dark hallways, with no one else in the entire center.
Seeing light in the witchcraft department, he made his way there, finding the entire section sealed off. Outside was a wall of alloy blast shields, with an electromagnetic grid fence in the middle. A doctor in a white coat sat behind the fence, turned to the side, sitting on a chair, grinning foolishly at a mobile phone, seemingly scrolling through some comedy clips.
Holding the incubator, Xu Yang came up to the window, knocked on the wall beside the railing, then pressed the notification button on the counter.
Hearing the buzzer, the doctor in the white coat looked up but didn’t speak, instead pointing to the electronic clock behind Xu Yang. Xu Yang turned to see it was already 17:55 in the evening; the doctor was about to leave for the day.
"Emergency," Xu Yang said in a low voice.
The doctor in the white coat shook his head.
"I’ll leave at six," he said, "That is the great right bestowed by the company. Didn’t you see I didn’t issue any new slots?"
"So when is the next on-call doctor coming?"
"No more; he was supposed to come but was delayed by the war. Come back tomorrow."
"Could you take 5 minutes to look at her?" Xu Yang pleaded, "She’s dying."
Under his breath, the doctor in the white coat cursed and then stood up, instructing Xu Yang to place the incubator in front of the electromagnetic grid. He glanced at the nearly dead infant inside the incubator, observing the bright red patches on her skin.
"Congenital Magic Circuit Interruption Syndrome," the doctor in the white coat said, "This one’s tricky, basically beyond repair. You should take her to the company’s loss management department for write-off. I’ll give you a form."
"We want to save her," Xu Yang said. "Money is not an issue."
"I wasn’t talking about money," the doctor in the white coat shook his head, "The surgery is tough, very likely to end in death. Don’t waste the money."
"Please," Xu Yang insisted.
The doctor in the white coat looked at the infant in the box for several seconds, then closed off the electromagnetic grid window, allowing Xu Yang to hand over the incubator.
Afterward, the doctor pressed a few buttons on the control panel nearby, activating four nurses who were synthetic humans, in a state of hibernation, emerging from hidden doors in the wall, pulling out the operating table, medical testing equipment, turning on the surgical lights, and preparing surgical instruments for the doctor in the white coat.
When their preparations were nearly complete, the doctor in the white coat reopened the grid window, increased the power of the invisible energy shield to avoid getting shot, and then dressed in surgical protective clothing. He took the incubator into the sterile room inside for surgery, opening the metal curtain that isolated the inside from the outside, with a glaring "In Surgery" red indicator light above.
Then there was silence.
Xu Yang asked Farosa to wait on the shuttle. She was very quiet, and he guessed she was anxious inside, but she didn’t show it. Suddenly, Xu Yang realized an urgent matter, a mistake made in the rush; he had forgotten to warn the doctor in the white coat that the infant could shoot lasers from her eyes. But it was too late now, and all he could do was hope the doctor’s experience was enough to avoid the risk.
About half an hour later, at six-thirty in the evening, the doctor in the white coat came out sweating profusely, cradling the incubator they had brought out through the closed grid window.
"Condolences," the doctor in the white coat said somberly and regretfully, "It was so close, just a tiny bit short."
Xu Yang looked at the incubator, where the witch baby quietly passed away.
"Almost, do you mean try again?" Xu Yang looked up.
"Ah?"
"Can you wait for 5 minutes?" Xu Yang quickly said, "Just 5 minutes, please. I beg you, don’t leave. Stay right here, you must!"
The doctor in the white coat stood his ground, watching as Xu Yang dashed out, crossed the pitch-dark hospital, and a few minutes later, came back cradling the incubator in his arms.
The doctor in the white coat looked down to see the witch baby trembling faintly inside the incubator.
"Ah." He took the box like he was sleepwalking, not uttering a word.
"Be careful, she can shoot lasers from her eyes," Xu Yang said.
"Oh." The doctor in the white coat muttered a few incantations, then turned and carried the box respectfully into the operating room.
He called out the four nurse robots again, closed the door curtain, and the surgical light lit up once more.
After 50 minutes, the doctor in the white coat walked back out slowly with the incubator, placing it on the counter across from the barred window, accompanied by a large bag of milk powder, a box of nutritional supplements, and a can of new medicine.
"Use this until she’s two," the doctor in the white coat pointed to the medicinal powder. "Take it once at one year old, twice at two years old. Scan this device to make the payment, a total of 21,000, payable in 24 installments, we can provide an invoice."
Xu Yang made the payment, looking at the incubator, the witch baby’s skin was now rosy, her breathing rhythmic and the strange red scars had all but vanished.
He thought of the unspoken rules of the company hospital, pinched an anonymous cash card in hand, and transferred some money into it.
"Thank you. Is there anything else I should be aware of?" Xu Yang shook hands with the doctor in the white coat, discreetly passing the anonymous cash card into the doctor’s hand.
The doctor in the white coat lifted his sleeve, snatched back the cash card, and returned it to Xu Yang.
"I am a doctor!" the doctor in the white coat exclaimed.
He opened the electromagnetic barrier and settled back into his chair, turning his attention to his phone.
Xu Yang carried the incubator back to the shuttle machine.
Farosa saw that the little baby was still alive, slowly approaching the incubator, her fingertip nearing the transparent glass as if to touch her through a layer of space.
"Is she safe?" Farosa asked.
Xu Yang glanced at the health panel on the side of the incubator.
"Safe," Xu Yang said.
Farosa opened the incubator and looked over the baby repeatedly.
Xu Yang lifted her eyelid, and a red laser shot from her eyes, piercing the hatch of the Purple Wind.
"What are you doing?" Farosa slapped away Xu Yang’s hand, "She’s sleeping soundly."
"Just relaxing," Xu Yang ran to the control panel, while Farosa repaired the damage on the hatch, including the large hole that had previously been corroded by acid on the floor; all were restored by Farosa.
In silence, they watched the little baby who could shoot lasers from her eyes for a long while, breathing evenly.
Xu Yang told Farosa about the baby’s parents.
"These two humans are not up to par; we’ll raise her," Farosa solemnly declared.
"This is a child who escaped death," Xu Yang squatted beside her, "a witch saved by humans, her growth filled with many expectations. Even for the sake of these newborns, we must change the status quo and build a world where they can live happily."
"She doesn’t have a name?"
"We didn’t get that far."
"Let’s name her. We’re raising her, right? Let’s raise her like a daughter," Farosa said, "We’ll be the best mothers and fathers, raising the most outstanding daughter."
"I’m not ready yet," Xu Yang felt apprehensive, "Maybe later."
"Come sit by me," Farosa beckoned him to sit by her side.
"What’s wrong?"
Farosa took Xu Yang’s hand, leaned back, and closed her eyes.
"I miss my mother," she said.
