Chapter 1053: Chapter 824: Finding a Solution for Lu Jing_2
"A40, go to this address and buy some miscellaneous items." Xu Yang sent a message to A40.
"Sure thing." Though it didn’t quite understand why it needed to travel 10 kilometers for this, it turned around obediently and left.
Once A40 left, Xu Yang carried Rinne into the back room, a sudden impulse taking over him.
Kissing and hugging were just a small part. He explored Rinne thoroughly, while she urgently confessed her feelings, proving the gravity he held in her eyes and deepening their connection into every sense.
In this atmosphere, they didn’t lose themselves entirely. Instead, they paid heed to boundaries, experimented with each other’s bodies, chasing a sense of joy, satisfaction, and warmth. In each other’s ears, they repeated tirelessly, "I love you," as though trying to grasp at something subtle, refusing to stop until reaching the peak.
The hundreds of flowing rivers swept through, and none of the old furniture in the warehouse was spared clean.
Rinne’s pupils lost focus for a moment.
She remained silent briefly before speaking.
"—Good girl Lu Jing—she likely won’t come here again," Rinne said.
"Hey... at a moment like this... Don’t bring up another woman’s name," Xu Yang said, supporting himself with both hands against the ground.
"I don’t want to give up like this." Rinne looked upward, her neck glistening with beads of sweat, her gaze carrying a trace of confusion, though it was unclear whether Xu Yang was the reason.
"Then go find her." Xu Yang said curtly.
"She’s in such a high position now, how would I even begin to look for her?" Rinne lowered her voice. "I might as well quit Nestor Corporation and leave."
"That would make it even more impossible to meet her. Don’t you know how strict the security is? And how many armies guard Lu Jing? Without a legitimate identity, you wouldn’t even get close to the doors of her corporate building." Xu Yang stood up, leaving all notable things upon her stomach.
"My head hurts." Rinne turned her head, "..."
"What’s wrong?"
"...Like in the past, going out with Lu Jing for a drink, inviting her to have a pink non-alcoholic beverage—it feels like it’s become a dream that will never come true... Lu Jing and I are no longer friends, and the Disciple Squad of those days is already fragmented beyond repair." Rinne lifted her hand, her gaze landing on her pale fingertips.
"The Disciple Squad has been taken over by the Bureau of Secrets," Xu Yang said. "The Bureau of Secrets..."
"Boss!" A40’s voice called out from a distance. "Everything’s bought! Making your brothers run errands isn’t very civil."
They hurriedly tidied up and then awkwardly exited. From afar, A40 glanced at them, returned to the Divine Radiance, and placed the purchased items onto the sofa.
The Star Weaving Lady, with the demeanor of a young mistress, ordered A40 to quickly pick them up and redistribute them into various cargo holds aboard the Divine Radiance.
"There will be opportunities," Xu Yang said as he drew a drink from the machine, a "Sweet Sprint," made up of two parts pink fizzy soda and one part lemon juice, a cute non-alcoholic beverage.
Rinne sat down, her knees awkwardly positioned, her elbows resting on either side. She held the narrow glass in her fingertips as the pink soda swirled inside, like a dream slowly melting away.
"Do you think she’s happy?" Rinne asked. "You said there are two worldlines. Do you think Lu Jing is happy in this one?"
"I don’t know." Xu Yang admitted. "But she’s about to inherit a massive company and become an extraordinary businesswoman. Her future probably aligns with Nestor Corporation, sharing its fortunes and hardships."
"But it seems like she has no friends." Rinne collapsed onto the sofa, covering her face with a pillow. "I want Lu Jing’s surroundings to be filled with laughter and good people, but all she has are those jittery green-clothed maids."
"We need to meet Lu Jing once and pull her out of the bureaucracy of Heavenly Cardinal Manufacturing," Xu Yang said.
"Yes! If I can’t talk to Lu Jing again in this lifetime, I’ll regret it forever," Rinne said urgently.
"It’s not hard. We only need... to hold a business meeting. But it must be well-reasoned and convincing to get someone of Lu Jing’s stature to attend." Xu Yang contemplated.
The hanging smart screen inside the cabin broadcast the latest news, showing Nestor Corporation’s rocket launching a large number of satellites into space.
They were to be deployed at various orbital heights, carrying functions of planetary scans and communication systems, marking Nestor Corporation’s ambitious step toward the skies.
"...Look... another step forward... When we unify the world, there will be no more disputes... Everyone’s ideals will come true, no more conflict and war, and all enemies will be defeated..." Rinne stared at the screen showing the rocket ascending. It seemed as though it was headed for the Moon, though it wasn’t—it was merely deploying into orbit for now.
She seemed to be fantasizing about the day of ultimate victory, when all enemies would be swept away, and they would share in the final triumph, like taking the crown from the heavens—the dream felt so real that Rinne slightly raised her hand.
"Yes, it will happen... When the time comes, all regret will vanish, and all our dreams will come true," Xu Yang comforted her.
Even though Xu Yang didn’t truly know, he didn’t know at all. The truth revealed at the Dragon Conference was devastating—they were supposed to perish in a different worldline, and the odds were slim at best.
Xu Cheng and Bubble woke up, attending virtual lessons in the learning cabin aboard the Divine Radiance, diligently acquiring knowledge. Baby Lila also woke up, eyeing Rinne warily.
"We need to visit Hosoda Yoshiyuki," Rinne muttered, then placed Baby Lila on her lap.
The members of the Disciple Squad who once lived and died together were now scattered across the winds.
Hosoda Yoshiyuki was now working at a construction site, much like most of those who had undergone augmentation. Their mechanical implants granted them higher efficiency in their tasks.
Hosoda Yoshiyuki operated at full capacity, amid the roar of rockets, moving materials of various sizes to assemble buildings of varying dimensions.
Rinne stood outside the shuttle machine, waving at him. Hosoda Yoshiyuki saw her but showed no extra reaction, continuing to fly across the skies.
"’Soul’ is gone; he’s probably reincarnated by now," Xu Yang said. "But the mechanical thought files inside his implants and prosthetics have replaced his will, allowing Hosoda Yoshiyuki to exist in a certain sense."
"So this is the answer left by those mechanical thought files: bricklaying?" Rinne sighed.
"This aligns with his behavioral logic. Even if Hosoda Yoshiyuki were alive, he would have likely returned to the civilian world after the Battle of Jialong Slope, becoming an earnest contributor," Xu Yang said.
Rinne adjusted a drink aboard the shuttle machine—one called "Direct Hit to the Liver," an exceedingly strong cocktail.
She went outside, holding up the glass in Hosoda Yoshiyuki’s direction. "Brought your favorite drink!"
Hosoda Yoshiyuki said nothing. He saw Rinne and her glass but made no extra movement, continuing his work diligently, like a tireless worker bee.
"This isn’t Hosoda Yoshiyuki," Rinne shook her head.
"It’s very similar... eerily similar, but you’re right—it’s not him," Xu Yang said. Those highly alienated mechanical thought files left inside the implants formed neural circuitry, but they couldn’t act beyond expectation, like performers sticking to a script.
Rinne displayed a bitter smile.
She poured the drink onto the ground as an offering to the earth, then slowly raised her hand to forehead height, saluting Hosoda Yoshiyuki for the memories that would never fade.
