Chapter 84: 84: reconsideration

In the infirmary, my throat was cleaned up and bandaged, along with my arm. While the nurses informed me that it was a close call which could have put me in harms way, I was still super grateful to be fine, although I feel tired as hell.

Jake was with me the entire time and I felt so relieved and comforted by his presence. Once we were alone, I was about to sit up when he hurried forward and gently laid me back in the bed, a look of disapproval across his face as he clicked his tongue.

"No mlbing yet."

"But the nurse said I was fine." I argued but he shook his head.

"You definitely shouldn’t be moving yet." He muttered and I sighed, before all that happened resurfaced in my mind and a gloomy feeling came over me, one which Jake instantly noticed.

"Think that woman was the one that was disguised as me?" He asked like he could suddenly read my mind and I nodded cause that’s exactly what was on my mind.

"That’s the most obvious answer, right?" I asked and after Jake nodded, I felt panic swirl within me even more.

"But what did she mean by her last statement? She said she wanted the king to give me to her? Why? Why does she wants me? It makes no sense, and is she even a person? Cause she turned into a snake before leaving, and..." I was rambling but didn’t realize till Jake grabbed my hand and asked me to relax a little and to breathe slowly.

"She’s most likely a spirit with no actual form, so she can morph into anything she likes." Jake muttered, his face in a pinched expression.

"What do you think is gonna happen to me?" I asked and Jake sighed while dragging a hand across his face.

"I honestly don’t know, but I won’t let you get hurt no matter what." He insisted and I felt myself relax a little.

"Which is why now that I’m thinking about it again, if would do you more harm than good if you come with me. As you can already tell, there’s a lot of danger here in this palace, so leaving with me is definitely the best option you have presently."

I bit in my bottom lip while turning what he just said around in my mind. Technically, he was making a lot of sense right now, however, I wasnt sure I want to leave with him because of Sloan.

When I was still silent, Jake ended yo sighing while nodding. "It’s alright, just take your time to think about it well, okay? You can make a decision later, altitudes?" As he spoke, I nodded as I let out a relieved sigh because I was so certain I wouldn’t have been able to make a decision right now, so I’m thankful he’s giving me time to think.

"Just, keep in mind that we’re running out of time, not just me, but you as well: what took place today is proof enough."

I nodded as I let out a small sigh. He was right. There is certainly not enough time left.

When every slave was asked to gather again in the same spot we were previously gathered in because they wanted to catch a shape shifter amongst us, we had no choose but to do just that- including myself, even though I still felt weak as hell anc should undoubtedly be resting.

"In relation to what I said some hours ago about the crow ball that’s coming up, we’ve decided to share you into different groups. Since the ball would take place in three days, that means there’s no time left." Lady Iris began to speak, then after that, she began to stare us into groups. When she called my name and assigned me to a group that’s suppose to accompany the prince to the location of the ball so we can clean the location up, I knew this was never a mere coincidence that I got assigned to this group. Panic grew within me as I went to stand by my assigned group.

"He’s still too weak after getting stabbed, he should be resting instead." Jake called out from his own group but lady Iris only rolled her eyes.

"He’s strong enough. There’s no resting time for slaves. You either work till you drop dead, or you get killed for not working when other slaves are working." Lady Iris responded without glancing over in the direction Jake has spoken from.

After she finished assigning everyone to various groups, I was relieved to see that belle was also in the same group as myself, which means I’ll have a familiar face to converse with throughout this ordeal.

Before we all took off with our various groups, I spoke with Jake who’s unhappy because we were in different groups.

"I couldn’t afford to come out and speak to Iris directly, because if I had done that, the hypnotis I had over her would break. I told you about it, remember?" He explained and it instantly came rushing back to me as I nodded.

"Ah, yes, I had forgotten about that." I muttered and he chuckled a little.

"I’d have liked to hypnotize her and make her leave you slime for the next few days so you’d be able to get a lot of rest, but unfortunately that would make the previous hypnotism u had over her to break." He explained and I nodded in understanding.

"It’s alright, Jake. I don’t feel so weak anyway, I belong I’ll be alright." I tried to assure him. He didn’t look fully convinced but he ended up letting out a reluctant sigh as he nodded.

"Just be careful, and be on the lookout for anything weird, cause that shapeshifter might come to you in the form of another person you trust." He advised and fear briefly sprayed within me as I nodded.

"I thought of this too. It’s a good thing I don’t have a lot of people I trust here." I muttered.

"Who do you trust around here?" He asked and I shrugged.

"Oh, I guess you and Sloan." I muttered.
