Chapter 33: A demon
Chapter 33: A demon
Zane took a step back when Ava got too close. There was something about her that made him apprehensive. It wasn’t there when they had met in the afternoon, but it was there now.
Suddenly, she stretched out her hand, targeting his neck. It moved so fast, like a snake snapping at its prey. But this was night, Zane was much stronger and much more in his element at this time.
He stepped back fast, the fingers missing by only a few inches. He looked at her hands, and there he saw glowing purple markings.
He had seen those markings before; he knew them. ’Demon marks. She’s a demon’. The sudden realization made him understand why he had been apprehensive. From what Lucy had told him, demons and vampires didn’t go well together.
Without missing a beat, he pulled out his dagger, spun it, and slashed. His movements were fluid and sharp, going straight for her neck.
She tilted to the side and dodged the blade, no need for excessive movements. He lunged forward, her hands still extended, but Zane reacted fast. He grabbed her hand with his other hand and pulled her in, kneeing her in the gut, but she blocked it with her palm and pushed his leg back.
The two of them got into their respective fighting stances. One of her hands was at the back, bent upward with her palm open, while the other hand was straight, pointing at Zane, fingers extended.
Her feet were apart, and she was slightly lowered. Her eyes focused on him like a serpent waiting to strike.
Zane, on the other hand, had his dagger in a reversed grip in front of him, while his other hand was in a boxer’s block. He looked at her through the gap, ready to go.
He looked at the level above her head. It was initially a level five, but he couldn’t see it, it was blurred out.
NPCs, despite not having the gaming system, still had levels, and they had ways to know it, as well as ways to hide it, though only high-level people with a lot of resources could afford to hide theirs.
With that information, he knew that she was definitely high-level and had some resources. She wasn’t just a random demon.
’So what is she doing here, with such a low-level party? Are they demons as well?’ Zane wondered.
"If you are wondering about why I am with such a party if I’m a demon, then I’ll tell you. I possess what we demons call the Blessing of the Seven Sins," she said.
Zane’s eyes widened when he heard that. The Blessings of the Seven Sins were one of the most powerful sources of strength for demons, and only a select few could get one.
As long as one carried out the attributes of the sin they were given, they could grow exponentially.
Ava smiled when she saw Zane’s shock. She knew he knew something about demons and the Seven Sins. She had said it to see his reaction, and it didn’t fail.
"And the sin I bear is the Sin of Gluttony. I consume the souls and life force of humans and other races alike to grow stronger.
This party is simply just a side snack I was growing. Like livestock, when they get big enough, I’ll consume them," she said, licking her lips as she spoke.
"You just told me you are a demon right now. Should you be allowing a human to know that?" Zane asked.
"Cut the lies, Zane. You aren’t human, I know it. I just don’t know exactly what you are yet. Also, I saw how you reacted when you saw my markings. You definitely know about demons.
So be a good boy and tell me what you are, or I’ll have to force it out of you," Ava said and lunged at him, striking with her hand first.
He sidestepped and dodged the attack, yet somehow a large cut appeared on his side.
He was stunned for a moment, but then he saw the patterns on her body glow and knew it had something to do with her ability. He stepped back quickly and gave her some distance.
The wound on his body immediately healed. She watched it heal and then looked at him. "Only demons have such a healing factor, but you aren’t a demon," she said.
"Stop trying to find me out already. I won’t tell you," Zane said.
"Then I’ll cut you up until you do," she said. Her marks glowed brighter. She attacked, slashing her hands like blades.
Zane dodged the hand, and a tree behind him was slashed in half.
’Shit, she is strong. What the hell was that attack? But there is no bloodlust from her... she doesn’t want to kill me. I can use that to my advantage,’ Zane thought, then charged in fast.
She attacked again, but he merged into the shadows and came out behind her. She was taken by surprise by that move. She tried to dodge, but his blade cut into her shoulder.
She pulled back fast; the wound on her shoulder healed up.
"You have some tricks, definitely things I’ve not seen before. Now I’m really curious about what you are," she said. She swung both hands. Zane felt the double attacks coming and immediately merged into the shadows again.
He popped up beside her and charged at her, moving at his top speed.
"It won’t work again," she said. Her patterns glowed, and a wave of slashes exploded from her body in all directions.
Zane wasn’t expecting it. The slashes cut into his body deep, leaving lots of cuts and stopping him in his tracks.
The wounds healed up again, but his clothes were in tatters. His shirt fell off and revealed his body.
Ava’s eyes widened. She knew he was handsome, but this ripped? She could already feel the drool forming in her mouth.
"Ahem," Zane cleared his throat when he saw her staring.
"I’m definitely having a taste after this," she muttered and charged toward him.
