Chapter 32: Who are you

Ava glanced at Lucy after Zane stopped her. She let out a cheeky smile and stepped back.

"Uhm, so who are you? We’d like to know the name of those that saved us," Roger said.

"My name is Zane, this is Lucy, and that’s Grey. We are basically traveling around to see the kingdom, no specific destination," Zane said.

"Ohh? Then why not come over to Blood Iron City? It’s a well-known city, and it has a dungeon. For someone like you, I’m sure a dungeon would be of interest," Roger said.

’A dungeon, huh? I’ve never been to Blood Iron City even in the game. I think it’s a good idea to go there, a dungeon is a good opportunity for me to level up faster,’ Zane thought.

"That would be great, just point us in the direction of the city," Zane said.

"No, no, we are headed there. That man lives in an estate inside the city. He came over to Raven City because the Count invited him for something special. He couldn’t go, though, because of the assassination attempt," Roger said.

’This Roger, he’s a loudmouth. He speaks too much and subconsciously releases too much information. So that noble is one of the people that was to watch the underground battles. He got lucky’, Zane thought.

[Special Quest: Finishing What You Started]

[Objective: Take out the corrupt Baron that wanted to watch the brutal underground battle]

[Rewards: Unknown]

[Punishment: Twenty-four hours reduction of stats by fifty percent]

A quest? I wasn’t expecting that, Zane thought. He glanced at the carriage. He could take out that man now, but he decided to wait and not kill these four. He didn’t want them to die because of something they didn’t know.

"Fine, we’ll trouble you then," Zane said.

"The pleasure is fully ours," Roger said. "You can sit in the carriage while we gather the ears of the goblins."

"Alright, but please, if there are any drops from the goblins, can you give them to me?" Zane asked.

"Oh yes, that won’t be an issue at all," Roger replied.

Zane got into the carriage and left them to gather. As soon as he entered, he locked eyes with the noble. He let out a smile, but it made the noble shudder in fear. She scooted away, but couldn’t get far enough, as Grey was sitting beside him.

Zane didn’t say anything. He simply paid attention to what was happening outside. He had the feeling that Roger wouldn’t keep his word about the drops.

He listened to their footsteps, their heartbeat, everything.

Roger was the first to find something. He found a green pearl. He quickly looked around and placed it in his pouch before cutting the ears of other goblins.

Zane let out a sigh. ’He fucked up. Greedy bastard.’ He had thought Roger would at least have some goodwill since he saved him, but at the slightest chance for a small profit, he turned against him.

’Well, it’s just a drop. I can forget about that,’ Zane thought. After a few minutes, they returned to the carriage with sacks and tossed them in.

Lily and Ava got on the back, while Grim and Roger got in front.

"Uhm, Zane sir, there weren’t any drops. Seems there weren’t any drops," Roger said, his face straight. But Zane could tell through his heartbeat that he was lying.

Zane waved his hand. "It’s fine. They were low-level monsters, a drop is really rare," Zane said.

"Yeah, but the dungeon in Blood Iron City has a very high drop rate. I’m sure you’ll find a lot of good things," Roger said.

"I can barely wait," Zane replied with a smile.

The journey to Blood Iron City with a two-horse pulled carriage was going to take two days, and that meant they would have to spend a night outside.

They rode through the forest and got through it before nightfall. Then they finally stopped for the night and set up camp. They made a fire and sat around it.

Roger made some soup and everyone ate happily. Soon, they fell asleep.

When the adventurers and the noble were asleep, Zane got up. He saw Grey leaning against the carriage, and Lucy sitting on the branch of a tree.

They couldn’t sleep at night, it was the time their bodies were most active, after all.

"Master, so what’s the plan from here?" Grey asked.

"We’ll go to the dungeon. It’s as simple as that. You need to get stronger, she does too, and so do I. We can’t rely on Lucy for difficult things always," Zane said.

"I understand, Master. I’ll give it my best," Grey said. He clenched his fist, the resolve in his eyes shining bright.

After a while, Zane headed into the forest just for a walk. After a few minutes, he felt a presence.

"Are you coming out?" he asked.

"Seems I didn’t hide well enough."

"More like you didn’t try to hide at all," Zane replied.

Ava walked out from the darkness, her eyes glowing purple.

Zane frowned. He could tell something wasn’t normal with her.

"You know what Roger said is true, right? I dry my victims out, though not in the way he knows," Ava said.

"And why are you telling me this? Also, how did you leave without Lucy spotting you?" Zane asked.

"That was simple. I used a doppelganger and some special tricks to get away," she replied with a smile.

’Doppelganger? That’s not something a low-level person can do. Something is very suspicious with her for sure,’ Zane thought.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"Hmmm, you catch on fast, real fast. But the question also applies to you. I can tell a human the moment I see one. But you? You aren’t a human at all.

So what are you, Zane? I can smell blood from you, yet you don’t seem to be alive," Ava said and slowly approached, a bright smile on her face.
